Listen to coach Mike Gundy during the Big 12 coaches teleconference discuss OU’s running game and more.

This year's game is the OSU coach's 18th overall.

STILLWATER — If anyone qualifies as a veteran in Bedlam football games, it would be Mike Gundy.

On Saturday, in a 7 p.m., ABC-televised clash at Boone Pickens Stadium, Gundy's 11th-ranked Oklahoma State team (9-2 overall, 5-2 Big 12) clashes with third-ranked Oklahoma (10-1, 6-1).

Having experienced Bedlam as an OSU player, assistant coach and head coach, the 41-year-old Gundy will be involved in his 18th Bedlam competition.

"Really? Eighteen?" he said on Monday. "I did not know that."

As the Cowboy quarterback in 1986-89, an assistant in 1990-95 and 2001-04, and the head coach since 2005, Gundy's record against the Sooners is 3-13-1.

A victory on Saturday would result in the first 10-win regular season in OSU history, and it would keep the Cowboys in contention for a possible Cotton Bowl berth.

"I think it's a big game for everybody in the state," Gundy said. "There's not any reason to deny that. From a business standpoint, I see it as any other game. It's very important (but) we go about it in a business-like manner. There are a lot of distractions that go along with this game, but that's part of it."

Gundy savored Bedlam wins in 1995 (when he coached quarterbacks on the first-year Bob Simmons staff) and in 2001 and 2002 (when he was the offensive coordinator for Les Miles).

When informed that Gundy is about to experience his 18th Bedlam spectacle, Cowboy center David Washington replied, "I'm sure he's fired up. I'd like to stay in it for that long. I'd like to have 18 Bedlams. Anything (Gundy) does, I'd like to do it, too."

An enduring Bedlam sidebar is the involvement not only of Mike Gundy, but of his younger brother Sooner running backs coach Cale Gundy.

As the OU quarterback in 1990-93, a student assistant in 1994 and a Bob Stoops assistant since 1999, Cale Gundy has an overall personal Bedlam mark of 11-2-1.

In Bedlam games in which both Gundy brothers were involved, Cale has an edge of 9-2-1.

On Saturday, the Gundys will compete in a nationally televised, high-stakes game. On Thanksgiving Thursday, they will convene for a big meal at their parents' home in Midwest City.

"In respect to our parents, we have to do that," Mike Gundy said. "You don't just say, well, you're a coach, so you don't go home for Thanksgiving."

Mike Gundy insists that football will not be a conversation topic when he and Cale are at the dinner table.

"Not any kind of football," he said. "That will always lead back to (Bedlam). She doesn't want to listen to any of that. Football doesn't even get brought up. Very seldom do they even turn the TV on and watch a pro game."

The "she" to whom Mike Gundy refers is his mother, Judy Gundy.

Careful Mike Gundy, little brother might try to spike your wine, and try to get you to tell him how you consistently turn seldom-recruited running backs into all Big 12 performers.
