Ticket policy changing little
OSU will again designate a "premium game" for next season.

For the 2009 football season, Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder confirmed on Monday, the Cowboy athletic department will have a ticket policy similar to the one that resulted in this year's school-record sales total.

In 2007, OSU sold 33,400 season tickets.

In an effort to increase sales, OSU introduced a new policy this year — admittance to the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State Bedlam game would be open only to season-ticket holders. The result was a school-record sales total of 39,823.

Holder reports that 2,886 season tickets were sold after the season had begun.

During the final 10 days before the Bedlam contest (a 61-41 Sooner triumph at Boone Pickens Stadium), OSU sold 170 season tickets.

"Football season-ticket sales are critical to the future of OSU athletics," Holder said.

"Limiting attendance for the 2008 Bedlam football game to purchasers of season tickets was an important factor in our increased season ticket sales.

"Therefore, we are committed to a similar policy for the 2009 season."

Holder said OSU has not determined which 2009 game will be designated as the premium game.

Included on the Cowboys' 2009 schedule are home dates with Georgia, Missouri, Texas and Texas Tech. Each of those teams was ranked in the Associated Press' top five at some point during the 2008 season.

Oklahoma State's season-ticket school record had been 38,674, set during the 2004 season.

Ticket breakdown

2007

Season tickets sold: 33,400.
Home attendance average: 40,024.

2008

Season tickets sold: 39,823 (school record). Previous record was 38,674, set in 2004.
Home attendance average: 48,254 (school record). Previous record was 46,805, set in 2004.

The only positive I can spin on the ticket controversy is that Holder stuck to his guns. Changing at the last minute just b/c the Bedlam game was huge would have destroyed his credibility. The one thing that he could have done last week which would have given us a leg up on next year was to sell single Bedlam tickets with prepay of 2009 season tix. I'd be willing to bet that more than 170 people would have ponnied up for THAT kind of deal instead of Holder's inflated cost to attend the 2008 Bedlam.

Holder did a great job. I am wondering just how many season tickets were sold just before the UO game.

I agree, the best way to increase season ticket sales is to keep winning! If Holder insists on having a "premium" game, at least put it in a multi-game package. For instance this year he could have packaged the OU game with Missouri State and Iowa State, two teams that aren't going to draw as many fans on their own merit.

T Bone, you need to re-read the article. You're answer is there.

I think a good idea might be that once a season starts (e.g. 2009) you allow those who want to buy individual game tickets for 2009 on the condition that the purchase is in conjunction for season tickets for the following season (2010). That will, IMO, increase the number of season ticket holders on an annual basis.

Ok State is not going away and the product on the field is one of the most exciting around. It's getting people from Tulsa and Ok City that have other things going on to commit to the drive, costs, time, etc. If Oklahoma can fill up Gaylor there's no reason that one day Ok State cannot get Pickens filled up.

Dave in Houston: Sorry I expressed my question in that manner. Meant the day of the game and not the last 10 days.
