Read Sports Editor Mike Strain's blog: Is Gundy worth the money?

During its Friday meeting in Miami, Okla., the OSU/A&M Board of Regents approved a new contract for Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy – a seven-year, $15.7 million deal.

The contract takes effect on Jan. 1. First reported Friday morning on tulsaworld.com, Gundy's average pay will be more than $2.2 million a year. This year, he was paid $1,053,000.

The specific amount of Gundy's 2009 compensation will not be known until January, when details of the contract are made public. The new contract extends through the 2015 season.

It is a certainty that Gundy, who led the 2008 Cowboys to a 9-3 regular-season record, has become the highest-paid coach in Oklahoma State history. First-year Cowboy basketball head man Travis Ford, paid $1.3 million a year, had been the highest-paid coach in school history.

Quoted in a university press release, Gundy said, “I have always appreciated the opportunity to coach at my alma mater. This is the best job in the country. We have great fans, we are building tremendous facilities, we have great support from the administration and I have a terrific staff."

The Tulsa World requested an interview with Gundy, but a university spokesman said the coach was not available.

"Coach Gundy has done an excellent job," OSU athletic director Mike Holder said. "He led our program to nine regular-season wins this year and a high national ranking, while playing in the toughest division in college football, the Big 12 South. Our student-athletes are excelling in the classroom and on the field. He has earned this increase."

When promoted to the head-coaching position in January 2005, Gundy was paid $700,000.

Gundy's teams have shown steady improvement. His 2005 squad was 4-7 overall, 1-7 in the Big 12. In 2006, the Cowboys were 7-6, 3-5 (with an Independence Bowl victory over Alabama). In 2007, the Cowboys were 7-6, 4-4 (with an Insight Bowl victory over Indiana).

This season, the Cowboys are 9-3 overall, 5-3 in the Big 12. OSU lost only to teams that were ranked No. 1 nationally (Texas), No. 2 (Texas Tech) and No. 3 (Oklahoma). OSU currently is No. 14 in the Associated Press Top 25.

The Cowboys have been nationally ranked for 10 consecutive weeks and achieved their first Top 10 ranking since 1988. In October, they ascended to the No. 7 position. Gundy's overall record is 27-22.

OSU is No. 7 nationally in total offense (489.3-yard average), No. 8 in rushing (256.0 yards per game) and No. 8 in scoring (41.6 points per game).

"The OSU Board and administration are extremely pleased with the job coach Gundy has done in moving our football program forward,” OSU President Burns Hargis said.

The Cowboys are expected to face Oregon in the Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl in San Diego, but bowl pairings will not be finalized until Sunday. OSU will make its sixth bowl appearance in seven seasons.

Over paid and under worked. All coaches across the country are over paid. Hope they are not like Notre Dame? Extended Weis's pay and now they can't get rid of him..............

After taxes on the 2009 amount... he will be making a little over his gross amount for 2008. Love the tax man. Congrats Mike! Spend wisely!

Are you kidding me...this is someone who has grossly under-achieved while the coach (remember Troy?) and really hasn't done anything this year. Who have they beaten? Missouri...big deal! Non-conference schedule is still a joke and OU, Texas, and Texas Tech are all still looking down at OSU. Hmmm...reward the coach ofr a 4th place finish in his division. Wait, isn't that what he did last year and people wondered if he was going to get canned? Continue recruiting thugs and gangstas and drawing on your little board while the defense is on the field being run through like a leaky dam.

Bob 1, acually coaches work 80-110 hours a week from August - February. They take a week or so of, get ready for spring ball, coaches clinics and summer camps (still working at least 60-80 hours a week). Most caching staffs take 3-4 weeks off in June or early July and then get ready for August practices. I agree that they may be overpaid but they are deffinatly not under worked.

Bla: Are you still thinking about the football school in Oklahoma remotely attached to a University that has had criminals for players that make the cover of sports illustrated?? Maybe you bought a coat or gasoline from one of the players so you could have lunch money or was a friend of a player that assaulted his supposedly best friend. Gee you sure have us sports fans confused.

BLA ~ Just curious if you're an OU or OSU fan? Keep in mind we (proud alumni of OSU) ranked as high as 6th this year. We are also in the toughest confress in the country. The Big 12 South alone houses the #2 (Oklahoma),#3 (Texas)and #7 (Texas Tech). Missouri may not be a top ten team but they are still ranked 20th and in the country and are playing for in the Big 12 Championship. We lost to Texas by 4 points in the 4th quarter. I'll admitt we got blown out by Tech. Against OU we trailed by only 3 points going into the 4th quarter and manage to put 41 points on OU, nobody else could do that all season...to inlcude Texas and Texas Tech. It's hard to see how much OSU has improved because of conference we are in. STOP BEING A HATER!

Milo, the player was never charged until almost 2 years after the event occured. Once he was found guilty, he was kicked off the team. Ever heard of "innocent until proven guilty"?

Ummm...didn't OU have a receiver on their team that had felony gun charges that were later reduced to misdemeanors (prior to arriving on campus)? He plead guilty to get the reduced sentence.

Personally I didn't agree with Gundy recruiting Collins but Collins was technically innocent for 2 years.

I agreee with RK. OU fans seem obsessed with anything OSU does. If I were a Sooner fan I'd be on the road to KC to watch the Big 12 Championship. Most OSU would love that opportunity. We may never get it, but it is my alma mater and I will continue to support them. Also, I hope both OU and TU win tomorrow. What a great day it would be football in our State.

Hootie... the girl was also innocent...
You truly think anyone believed he was innocent!?
And if complaining had not been as loud, do you truly think he would have been kicked off?? If one complains about one team recruiting criminals, perhaps they need to look at both??

Milo, no one said the girl wasn't innocent. Why should we believe he was guilty until he was proven to be. Do you remember the Duke "rape" case and all the publicity that surrounded it. It basically ruined some innocent guys lives, cost the DA his job, made Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson look foolish.

Unfortunately, Collins did end up being proved guilty and was immediately kicked off the team.

Do you remember Dusty Dvoracek (last name spelling?) beating a guy almost to death in a bar, getting a suspension then being back on the team at UO?

At least you decided to look at both...
As for Gundy, he will soon have to work extra hard for his raise that he has GROWN into.....that is if his D coordinator truly leaves...I would think that would hard to replace and then again...perhaps Boone T already has one lined up!! Regardless I am very proud of the team...in the end, they play the game,no?
How many jobs were the Duke players offered while awaiting trial??

First, I'm a die hard Sooner fan. Second, I'm a big Cornhusker fan. To say OSU has never been one of my personal favorites would be putting it mildly. Nevertheless, I am a big fan of Coach Gundy and am happy that OSU has made this decision. I remember watching Coach Gundy as a great high school QB and think he was an even better QB during his playing time with the Cowboys. Congratulations Coach! This is well deserved as you are one of the up and coming coaches in the game today. I can actually pull of OSU with Coach Gundy leading the way, except of course when they meet up with the Sooners and Cornhuskers.
