During its Friday meeting in Miami, Okla., the OSU/A&M Board of Regents approved a new contract for Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy — a seven-year, $15.7 million deal.

The contract takes effect on Jan. 1. First reported Friday morning on tulsaworld.com, Gundy's average pay will be more than $2.2 million a year. This year, he was paid $1,053,000.

The specific amount of Gundy's 2009 compensation will not be known until January, when details of the contract are made public. The new contract extends through the 2015 season.

It is a certainty that Gundy, who led the 2008 Cowboys to a 9-3 regular-season record, is now the highest-paid coach in Oklahoma State history. First-year Cowboy basketball head man Travis Ford, paid $1.3 million a year, had been the highest-paid coach in school history.

In a university press release, Gundy said, "I have always appreciated the opportunity to coach at my alma mater. This is the best job in the country. We have great fans, we are building tremendous facilities, we have great support from the administration and I have a terrific staff."

The Tulsa World requested an interview with Gundy, but a university spokesman said the coach was not available.

"Coach Gundy has done an excellent job," OSU athletic director Mike Holder said. "He led our program to nine regular-season wins this year and a high national ranking, while playing in the toughest division in college football, the Big 12 South.

"Our student-athletes are excelling in the classroom and on the field. He has earned this increase."

When promoted to the head-coaching position in January 2005, Gundy was paid $700,000.

Gundy's teams have shown steady improvement.

His 2005 squad was 4-7 overall, 1-7 in the Big 12. In 2006, the Cowboys were 7-6, 3-5 (with an Independence Bowl victory over Alabama). In 2007, the Cowboys were 7-6, 4-4 (with an Insight Bowl victory over Indiana).

This season, the Cowboys are 9-3 overall, 5-3 in the Big 12.

OSU lost only to teams that were ranked No. 1 nationally (Texas), No. 2 (Texas Tech) and No. 3 (Oklahoma). OSU currently is No. 14 in the Associated Press Top 25.

The Cowboys have been nationally ranked for 10 consecutive weeks and achieved their first Top 10 ranking since 1988.

In October, they ascended to the No. 7 position. Gundy's overall record is 27-22.

OSU is No. 7 nationally in total offense (489.3-yard average) and No. 8 in rushing (256.0 yards per game) and No. 8 in scoring (41.6 points per game).

"The OSU Board and administration are extremely pleased with the job coach Gundy has done in moving our football program forward," OSU President Burns Hargis said.

The Cowboys are expected to face Oregon in the Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl in San Diego, but bowl pairings will not be finalized until Sunday.

OSU will make its sixth bowl appearance in seven seasons.
