SAN DIEGO — Over the span of four seasons (1986-89), Mike Gundy became Oklahoma State's career total-offense leader.

Making 42 starts at quarterback, he finished with 7,749 yards of total offense.

Tuesday's Holiday Bowl — matching the No. 13 Gundy-coached Cowboys with No. 15 Oregon at Qualcomm Stadium — will be the 24th start for OSU junior quarterback Zac Robinson.

If Robinson produces at least 347 yards of total offense (a figure he reached in two games this season), he will have supplanted Gundy as OSU's all-time yardage king.

It's not a question of whether Robinson will break the record, but when. He is a fourth-year junior, with one remaining season of eligibility.

Entering the Holiday Bowl, Robinson's career total yardage stands at 7,403 (5,904 passing, 1,499 rushing).

"I didn't know anything about it until (Christmas Eve). My mom is the one who pointed it out," Robinson said. "Being a mom, she keeps track of that sort of thing. I honestly had no idea that I was even close. It surprised me to be up on it that quick.

"Coach Gundy and I have never discussed any stats or records. Maybe after the bowl game, he'll give me a hard time about it."

This season, Robinson had 347 total yards against Houston and 461 against Iowa State. In 2007, he had three performances of at least 347 yards — a school-record total of 486 against Texas, 372 against Indiana in the Insight Bowl and 366 against Kansas.

Before Robinson, no Cowboy had come close to touching the Gundy record. Josh Fields, OSU's starting quarterback in 2002 and 2003, finished with 5,936 total yards. Tony Lindsay (1997-2000) had 5,355 total yards and Tone Jones (1993-96) had 5,303.

"Good things continue to happen for (Robinson)," Gundy said. "He deserves it. The guy has worked extremely hard and has been a great leader for us."

Said Cowboy offensive tackle Russell Okung: "Zac has been the same old Zac every day. I had no idea that he was coming up on a record. It would be a great record for the whole team."

Robinson's 2008 passing numbers (2,735 yards, 24 touchdowns, eight interceptions) are comparable to those he posted last season (2,824, 23, nine). He has become established as the most productive dual-threat QB in OSU history. Playing in 32 games overall, he has averaged 5.0 yards per rush attempt while scoring 17 times.

While saluting OSU All-American wide receiver Dez Bryant and running back Kendall Hunter as big-play threats, Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said Robinson "actually scares me more than anybody else on their team."

"He can really make a difference with his ability to run," Bellotti said.

Zac is awesome. 1000% better than old duck thrower Gundy. Zac has some good backs to hand off to but Gundy maybe had the best combination of backs ever to hand to which did limit his yardage. Nonetheless, wouldn't trade Zac for both of the Gundys.
