Brandon Pettigrew: OSU coach Mike Gundy said, “He’s going to be a first-round pick.”

Pettigrew's legacy: Entering his final college game — Tuesday night's Oklahoma State-Oregon Holiday Bowl — Cowboy senior tight end Brandon Pettigrew had 106 career catches for 1,399 yards and nine touchdowns. Coach Mike Gundy has said that Pettigrew should be regarded as one of the elite all-around players and blockers in school history.

In spite of missing three full games because of a sprained ankle, Pettigrew was a finalist for the Mackey Award, given annually to the top tight end in college football.

"He's going to be a first-round (NFL) pick," Gundy predicted. "He's five hours from graduating, and he's enrolled in five hours for the spring. He's going to stay in Stillwater and graduate, and then he'll still be a first-round pick.

"For him, I don't think you can ask for more than that. He's ahead of the game."

Pettigrew had six catches for 51 yards in the Holiday Bowl.

The finale: Pettigrew is one of 15 OSU seniors. Also completing their careers are safety Quinton Moore, cornerback Jacob Lacey, safety Ricky Price, punter Matt Fodge, center David Washington, guard Steve Denning, defensive tackle Jeray Chatham, defensive back Zach Crissup, safety T.J. Bell, long-snapper Zach Allen, tight end Brian Bowling, defensive tackle Tonga Tea, wide receiver Todd Nelson and linebacker Seb Clements.

Final farewell: Tim Beckman was dressed out in OSU coaches attire with a headset on and stationed on the second row of the coaches booth for Tuesday's game. But the recently hired Toledo head coach and former Cowboys defensive coordinator simply was an observer and adviser for the game.

Defensive line coach Glenn Spencer moved into Beckman's seat on the front row of the booth for the game. Associate head coach Joe DeForest stayed on the field and made the defensive calls.

"Joe has earned the right to make those calls," Gundy said.

Gundy reiterated throughout bowl workouts in San Diego that he wants to hire Beckman's replacement in the next two weeks.

Hit and miss: OSU sophomore kicker Dan Bailey set his new career-long field goal with his 45-yarder on the game's opening possession. Bailey's previous longest field goal was 44 yards in the Nov. 29 game against Oklahoma.

However, Bailey missed a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter to snap a streak of 10 consecutive.

Tossed for a loss: For the first time this season, Matt Fodge's call failed. The senior punter is responsible for making the call on the opening coin toss. Since OSU was the visiting team, Fodge called heads just like he did for the five regular-season road games.

This time, the coin showed tails.

Oregon deferred and OSU took the ball to start the game.

Captains: After selecting captains for all 12 regular-season games, the Cowboys elected permanent captains for the season earlier this month. Selected were Fodge, Pettigrew and junior linebacker Andre Sexton.
