TU unveils new Captain 'Cane mascot
The redesigned Captain 'Cane poses for a portrait after a press conference at the University of Tulsa on Monday. MIKE SIMONS/Tulsa World

TU's Graham: Team will bounce back
Sports Editor Mike Strain’s blog:
What created the biggest stir among fans: Cowboys 4Ever, Captain ’Cane or Landry’s mustache?
Tulsa introduced a new-look mascot before Todd Graham's press conference on Monday.
Captain 'Cane will make his debut at TU's home opener against Sam Houston State on Saturday night.
Captain 'Cane is a human form, differing from past Golden Hurricane mascots. A muscular-bound figure, he carries a hurricane-summoning sword, energy-sourcing thunder boots, lightning bolt blaster gloves and a wind-current flying cape.
"We've had Captain 'Cane from the 1970s and he's still our mascot," Tulsa athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. "It's difficult to depict a hurricane or wind.
"Captain 'Cane is still Captain 'Cane. We've made him more of a superhero than depicting a hurricane."
The former Captain 'Cane was a Hurricane-shaped mascot that was voted by Foxsports.com as the second-worst college mascot behind Stanford's tree.
"Just what the heck is on top of his head?" the Web site asked about the retired Captain 'Cane costume. "Winnie the Pooh's beehive? An upside-down cowpile?
"Not satisfied with the bad headgear, the Golden Hurricane added a sinister smile and punched-in nose for an even more ridiculous look. Looking like you lost a fight with a pottery instructor is no way to go through life."
The Hurricane-type mascot has been a part of TU since 1977, when the mascot was known as "Hurc" and later a transformation to the nickname "Huffy." In the early 1990s, Captain 'Cane took on a new look.
A coloring book will be given to the first 2,000 youth at Saturday's 6 p.m. game against Sam Houston State. It will introduce how the new character evolved.

So we got rid of a guy walking around with a cowpie and replaced it with a cheap knock-off of the X-men? I'm starting to think TU creates terrible mascots on purpose.

I have always thought it was strange that they use hurricane anyway. We are in Tulsa, we don't have hurricanes! Tornadoes, yes. Hurricanes, no.

I get that it's a cool mascot I just don't get why they had Jay Leno wearing it in the picture . . . oh wait that chin is foam.

LOL To tell the truth, I don't remember or noticed the old Mascot. I wonder what mascot they had before the 1970's, if they had won.
I've got one to top that. I grew up mainly in Coffeyville, KS. Just northeast of Coffeyville is a very small town Cherryvale (pop. 2,300). For years and years their high school team name was the Cherryvale Fighting Cherries. LOL The mascot was changed in 1969 by the high school student council after an overwhelming vote of the student body. Can you imagine being a cheerleader and having to do cheers about cherries? LOL

Oops, I forgot, the Cherryvale High School changed their team name to the Chargers.
That is a good point, we aren't located where we get hurricanes and so why is TU called the Golden Hurricane? Are hurricanes golden in color?
My high school alma mater (Coffeyville, KS) are the Golden Tornadoes.

I am a huge TU fan and support them in just about everything but this is awful...I feel sorry for the kid who has to run around wearing that thing.
