The Picker examines biggest question in sports

Outpick the Picker: Think you can outpick the Picker? Take him on every week of the football season. Enter here.

Today, we tackle the most puzzling question in sports: How can people be so dumb?

Do they quit reading entirely? Do they hang with idiots? Do they block from their minds all things logical? Is being dumb fun?

People have been dumb about TU, thinking it could keep scoring without great coach Gus.

People have been dumb about Oklahoma State, thinking that you can get great overnight when, in fact, it takes 10 years of relative goodness before greatness is possible.

And never before in sports history have so many people been so hard-core, pumpkin-bumpkin, air-head, blockhead, grammar-slammer dumb as has been the case with the state of OU football.

Get this: OU is playing with a second-team quarterback, a third-team tight end, seventh-team offensive linemen, 11th team receivers, and A FIRST-TEAM DEFENSE!

And still the yahoos criticize the offense.

Listen people, the OU defense hasn't made a play to win a big game in almost a decade.

Why do so many fans and media homers opt for easy targets like the battered offense?

Is it because questioning the defense is to question Stoops? After all, Venables does what Stoops dictates.

Is everybody too afraid of Stoops to take a wild swing at objectivity?

Is OU's basic defensive strategy, stop the run first, flawed? Maybe stopping the run first back in the day made sense. What about now, when people pass first, second, and third?

Stars and injuries come and go; basic philosophies carry over.

Nobody wants anybody fired.

A new mind? A new idea now and again?

Could be smart.

PICKS

TU note: TU hosts Boise State on church night, next Wednesday, with ESPN on hand, too late for this week's picks, too early for the next edition.

The lefty Boise quarterback is too tough: Boise by 20.

High school mess note: The problem is obvious, the solution, a cinch to implement.

They're starting those kids too late.

Waiting until the third grade, come on, Daddy-Man coaches, get louder, get tougher, get them out of the sandbox and get organized and draft those tots in the first grade.

Thursday

Nebraska (-1) at Missouri: Could be for the Big Ten West, otherwise know as the Big 12 North.

Monsoon expected.

The new Mo quarterback is big and slow and doesn't seem to like being hit. But he is home.

Nebraska D has improved from pink to charcoal shirts.

Pelini's pass coverage looks like OU's, it's a little late.

Nebraska by 3.

Saturday

Baylor at OU (-24): Sooners try to play their way out of Cotton to the Alamo, with the haunting image of the Independence on the horizon.

The danger of any regional bowl is of course catching an SEC team and being squashed.

With Texas revenge pending — that's right, revenge off a win — this could be a real downer.

How would you like to be in the quarterback's shoes behind this offensive line — cleats to house shoes always possible after any snap.

OU by 26.

Oklahoma State (-7 1/2) at the Aggies: Big 12 to SEC comparison a week ago, Arkansas 100, Aggies 5.

Texas A&M has been the biggest disappointment in two centuries, proving an influx of mega-bucks doesn't guarantee beans.

When they say the Aggie D knows how to line up right, they mean it knows which direction to face, that's about it.

Low number is Vegas trying to take our medicine money.

After the most recent player problem, somebody get Gundy more aspirin.

OSU by 7.

Alabama (-5 1/2) at Mississippi: Real man football.

Nutty effort expected.

Alabama by 1.

Arizona (-2 1/2) at Washington: Mike, come back, they're still running unattended in our secondary, they're still crazy open after all these years!

Arizona by 1.

Georgia (-1) at Tennessee: What's up with these numbers? Looks like Vegas is still tipsy after putting out such a bad number on OU-Miami.

Pass completion rate of 35 percent each would be decent for these.

Georgia by 6.

Colorado at Texas (-31 1/2): This gigantic number takes lack of respect to a new level.

The Colorado defense would rather be anywhere else, class, even.

Texas by 31.

Auburn (-2) at Arkansas: Couple of pinball wizard coaches go at it here — 40 points might not win it.

Ark by 3.

Florida (-11 1/2) at LSU: Tebow fails in attempt to walk on swamp water.

LSU by 2.

Michigan at Iowa (-7 1/2): The fast forward button brings Big Ten football up to speed.

Iowa by 9.

Sunday

Dallas (-7) at KC: After being called out by former Cowboy greats, Tony Turnover continues to pout and sulk.

Wade Phillips is a fired coach walking.

Dallas by 6.

Cincy at Baltimore (-8): Former OU receiver catching bruises at Balt.

Home team by 9.

Atlanta at San Francisco (-3): Former linebackers have the right mind-set for coaching punks.

SF by 4.

New England (-3 1/2) at Denver: Denver dispels notion that you need a quarterback.

New England by 3.

Indy (-3) at Tennessee: Indianapolis receivers must catch a Manning pass or risk seeing the football stick in your face mask.

Indy by 4.

Monday

Jets (-1) at Miami: USC quarterback warms up to improved climate.

Jets by 3.

True about OU pass D but put Sam, Gresh and Broyles back out there and we win both those games by 2 TD's anyway. If I remember correctly we gave up quite a few points last year and still got a title shot. Odds wouldn't have been as good this year even if those guys were healthy because of the o-line and a few less targets for Sam but we'd be 4-0 and still in the hunt right now.

Mr. Picker,
You couldn't be more correct about the OU defense. When the offense isn't playing its best game and has injuries, the defense must step up and make the plays to win the game. Bob Stoops, Brent Venables, and the rest of the OU defensive coaching staff has been running the same stuff for the past 5 plus years that hasn't worked, and they continue to run the same defensive plays. Stoops need to try something different, even if that means firing some defensive assistants, Venables included, to bring in some new blood.

Medium Game Bob is in danger of being demoted to Small Game Stoopr. Needs to beat Tejas to retain his title.

Yes pickerman Defense is THE issue and has been for 9 years.

4th quarter fades and blown coverages are the rule.

Boise by 20?! I'm normally right with you pick, but I think you got his one way wrong. I hope your willing to eat those words on the 15th.

How did Bob ever get the name "big game bob"? Was there an award show I missed? Bob Stoops takes chances at times and sometimes he gets lucky and sometimes he doesn't. He has won many big games and he has lost some. I think he has won the BIG 12 3 years in a row. He beat Texas Tech last year which was a big game. However, we desperately need a new defensive game plan. Cover 2 zone doesn't work when we play teams that have recievers that are faster than our corners. Just look at how Franks gets beat on any deep route. We need to stop the pass first while we contain the run. We need to stop blitzing our linebacks every play. I think Bob Stoops is an excellent coach that has one flaw...he is too loyal to asst. coaches.

As a longtime OU football fan that happens to live in Orlando, I still find time to watch, read and listen to comments about the Sooners thanks to the internet. In this area of the country all I ever hear is the SEC is the best, the toughest, and anything else you can think of that implies an outstanding brand of football. I make sure I promote the Big 12 as much as possible, and especially OU. The problem is as some of you have mentioned, OU can't win the big game any more. When those games are on national tv, it's almost embarrassing to watch. OU vs USC, OU vs LSU, OU vs Boise State are just a few of those games where it was clear that OU simply wasn't ready to play until the outcome was clearly decided. The way me and these SEC fans here see it, the biggest problem is definitely the defense of Brent Venables. He is very predictable all the time (12 consecutive blitzes against Miami, regularly unable to cover anyone with speed on long pass plays like the ones against Miami last week, etc.). Stoops used to be well liked here from Orlando to Gainesville, since he was Spurrier's defensive coordinator when the Ol' Ball Coach won the NCAA championship in '96. But because the Venables defense continues to make the same mistakes year after year, all of the luster and goodwill Stoops had here, is now gone. I'm certain OU could shop around and get the best defensive minds out in the coaching world, but Stoops refuses to do so. By being loyal to his assistants, or whatever you want to call it, he is doing to OU what Bobby Bowden has now accomplished at Florida State...he's turned a strong asset (an aggressive defense with fast corners) into a laughingstock. Neither coach wanted to change what had been working for so long, and now they're paying the price. OU is still far better than FSU, but unless the O-line learns the basics of blocking, teams like Texas, Texas Tech, and even OSU could make life no fun for Stoops and company. Some speed receivers or any receiver that is able to separate from the defenders is sadly lacking as well. Why can't a team with the recruiting base and history of Oklahoma football somehow manage to recruit talented receivers? Stoops got lucky when Iglesias and Kelly got a lot better mostly on their own. Screaming at them on the sidelines on national tv isn't going to make the receivers catch the ball, but good coaching may. Good recruiting would be better yet. Stoops created this team, so he better be able to objectively figure out why the newer recruits seem to be so stupid. When some of these guys can't even put the words together to make a meaningful comment, how does Stoops expect them to learn a complicated playbook? The bottom line of this is: Get rid of Venables and his staff, recruit faster and smarter players at the skill positions, and stop making mediocre teams look like champions.

When you see all of the talent that OU has in the NFL every week, doesn't it make the powers at OU wonder how the Sooners didn't run wild on teams like Boise State? The lines outweighed BSU by about 50 lbs a man, and OU had Adrian Peterson for crying out loud. With the team OU had then, just like it did last year, no one like a Boise State should be able to compete with OU, yet BSU was allowed to make a game of it, and you all know the rest.

NYYfan, fantastic note, it's time for somebody to earn his salary.

The Texas game next week could get rough.

Kenya, yes, it's true, I was the only human on earth to take Nebraska at Missouri. Thanks for noticing.

Nyyfan, you should know better than anyone that having the most talent and best coaching doesn't always produce championships. Recruiting is a gamble and sometimes can't miss prospects just don't work out for a number of reasons. Also, I'm not really sure how you figure coaching is going to make guys catch the ball. I'm going with Bob on that one and getting in their grill, along with having them catch passes until their gloves have holes in them at the next practice.
