Call me crazy, but OSU may start 11-0

The comprehensive four-day series on Big 12 football by the Tulsa World that kicks off today demands a prediction. So the time has come to crawl out about as far on a limb as one with a bulging waistline dare go.
No problem. Here's a potential matchup — with records and rankings — that could happen in 2009: No. 2 Oklahoma State (11-0, 7-0 Big 12) at No. 1 Oklahoma (11-0, 7-0).
If that Bedlam Series scenario becomes a reality on Nov. 28, this football-crazy state might lose its collective mind in the week leading up to the game.
Pat Jones looked at me the other day like I had already lost all my marbles when I suggested the unbeaten Bedlam showdown to him. Jones often gave me that same dumbfounded stare during the 11 seasons I asked him questions when he was OSU's coach.
Nobody outside of Austin, Texas, would consider it outlandish to suggest OU will be undefeated when the Sooners host the Cowboys. After all, several national media members have already predicted an OU-Florida rematch in next season's BCS national championship.
But OSU opening with 11 straight wins? Most of the so-called experts believe that prediction will be history after the Cowboys lose their season opener to Georgia on Sept. 5.
While I'm definitely in the minority with my position on the Pokes, I'm not alone. Bruce Feldman, the veteran
ESPN.com
writer who is a real expert on the college game and not a so-called one, has listed OSU as one of his 10 picks "with the best shot of winning the BCS title."
Rest easy, OU fans. Feldman has the Sooners at No. 3 and the Cowboys No. 9.
OSU also has strong support from five national media outlets that have published their first preseason polls. An average of the polls places OSU at No. 7, with losses coming to No. 2 Texas and No. 3 OU.
Before you fit me for a straitjacket, consider the logic behind my belief that OSU has a shot to start 11-0. Notice I said "shot" and not "lock." But it's not as insane as the critics undoubtedly will label it via e-mails, and Jones delivered with his incredulous expression.
Like any team that opens 11-0, OSU will need to avoid serious injuries to key players and get a few lucky bounces, the ones every undefeated team gets.
OSU's schedule is a key part of a perfect storm that's brewing in Stillwater. OSU will play an incredible eight homes games.
It's imperative for OSU fans buy into the excitement by turning Boone Pickens Stadium into a snake pit. OSU needs its sparkling stadium to be sold out and rocking to give them the extra edge they will need against teams like Georgia and Texas.
Two of OSU's out-of-state road trips are short jaunts to Texas, where OSU fans must follow the Pokes in hordes. Texas A&M and Baylor are improving, but both are winnable contests for the Cowboys.
Also, Zac Robinson has to play with a controlled rage that's fueled by his desire to prove he belongs in the same Big 12 sentence with OU's Sam Bradford and Texas' Colt McCoy when the topic is the nation's best quarterbacks.
It's also no secret that the optimism surrounding OSU skyrocketed when coach Mike Gundy hired former OSU linebacker Bill Young as defensive coordinator. There's a certain symmetry to bringing an old Cowboy back home to finally fix the one area that has been broken for years.
In addition to his extensive experience, the 62-year-old Young has a quiet confidence about him that screams, "I know how to succeed where so many others have failed."
It's the dramatic impact Young's coaching could have on senior cornerback Perrish Cox that provided the final push out on that 11-0 limb. Young must make Cox into the second coming of Aqib Talib, the former All-American cornerback at Kansas.
When KU stunned everyone in 2007 by going 12-1 and winning the Orange Bowl, Young's defense was the linchpin in that dramatic turnaround. Led by Talib, the Jayhawks ranked fourth nationally in scoring defense, eighth against the run and 12th in total defense.
OSU fans have long lusted for those type of defensive numbers. Finally, their years of wandering in a defense-less wilderness may soon be over.
If the Young-Cox combination clicks as Young-Talib did, it's not a stretch to predict OSU will take a couple other numbers with it into Bedlam 2009: 11-0.

Actually, you're not crazy. Every team that goes that gets to that point has the following occur..
1. Not too many major injuries.
2. Most games are played at home.
3. Games on the road are not too tough.
4. Injuries or other circumstances have an impact on their opponents.
5. Luck.
That's what always happens.

You could be correct!
1. Great quarterback with experienced players!
2. Great recruiting!
3. Young with Gundy ...should be a winning combination!
4. New full stadium!
5. Good schedule.
Look out for OSU!

I think the part that might be considered crazy is the prediction that both OSU and OU will be 11-0 when they meet for their Bedlam game.
Certainly either is capable of being 11-0 at that point but the chances are against it. Last year, Texas got lucky and beat both. They might well do it again. They are good enough to beat both OU and OSU if they get the breaks. I think the chances are against them beating both again this year, but it should not be surprising if they beat one or the other.
Personally, I am guessing that Texas will want to beat OU more then OSU and that they are slightly more likely to beat OU than OSU since their game with OU is on a neutral field in Dallas whereas their game with OSU is in Stillwater this year.
With regard to the preseason rankings referenced in the column, I would mention that the higher rankings for Texas and OU are at least partly due to "tradition." (They always win so you expect them to win.) But since OSU has no tradition of winning, that average 7th ranking of OSU by the so-called experts must be based strictly on the talent that OSU can put on the field.
Looking forward I think that OSU has a slightly better than an even chance of beating Texas and probably about an even chance of beating OU, a slightly better than even chance of beating Kansas and less than even chance of beating Florida.
Call me crazy if you wish.

Vern, that "tradition" of which you speak refers to a little thing called "depth." When Texas or OU can put fresh bodies on the field in the latter part of a game without a significant drop off of talent, it gives them a decided advantage over teams that can not do this. That is why they have a tradition of winning.
But things are changing at OSU and you might as well get used to it. Admittedly, the depth at OSU is still not quite on a par with Texas and OU, but it is getting there, and with increasing rapidity.

No team in the country could survive Georgia, OU, and Texas. In fact, I don't see anyone going undefeated in the Big 12, not with the North improving (e.g., Missouri, Nebraska). We're going to turn into the SEC - a bunch of great teams beating up on each other every year.

OSU will beat UT, UGA and Tech in Stillwater. OSU would have been 11-0 last year before playing the Sooners if it had Tech and UT in Stillwater. UT barely beat OSU in Austin.

Good Luck Pokes, I'll be rooting for you in the sand box!!!!

You've got to think big to do big things. Having said that I'd rather that Okie State sneak up on people. It wouldn't bother me at all if OSU is the underdog in 4 or 5 games this season.
I look at Houston as the trap game. Of course UGA is UGA and OSU needs to extract revenge but Georgia will have some superior athletes, as does, obviously, OSU which needs to answer the question marks but I think Cowboys in the state and around the world are confident that they are on the right track. Start quaking in your boat shoes, Gooners, hah hah.

I love OSU and nothing would make me happier than 11-0 but I'm not going to bet the farm on it. I need to see some defense first.
If I remember correctly, there were several articles very similar to this about the University of Tulsa last year...

What if OU loses to Texas, OSU beats Texas, and OU beats OSU (late in the season)? Each team with 1 loss...Hmmm....sounds like another Big XII controversy waiting to happen....

Jimhuntin, I agree that it will be extremely difficult to beat Georgia, Texas, and OU in the same year. I think the one thing going for the Pokes is that those games are spread apart far enough that the players can recover from the physicallity of the last.
Your argument about the north I have to disagree with. Mizzou lost both their studs on offense and their defense is a joke. Nebraska is still searching for a QB as well. I think that the strongest team in the north may be Kansas and that isn't saying much.
Maybe in 3 years the north will start to challenge again but for these next few years I see the south manhandling them just as they did last year. Go Pokes!!!

Ram14, OU would take it again based on the fact that they beat OSU who would probably be #1 or 2 in the nation being 11-0 at that time.
Before that game the ranking would probably look like it did last year with Texas at like #4 and OU at #5. OU would leap frog both Texas and OSU with the win over OSU and the BCS ranking would once again crown them Big 12 champs.
Then Texas can put up 2 astericks...

Hey Dave, good column...followed the link off of Tim Griffin's "Lunchtime Links" today...Newsflash for OSU fans: Check out the Dawgs' record on the road with Richt. If you think getting your stadium full and "rockin'" is going to phase this team, you're out of your minds. This team plays AT 'Bama, LSU, and Tennessee...all stadiums that are much LOUDER and INTENSE than OSU's. The Cowboys were embarrassed 2 years ago in Athens, and they'll be embarrassed this time, too. UGA always has their breakout years when they're not expected to be as good (i.e. 2005, after a disappointing 2004). I'll be in Stillwater for the game...you OSU fans better prepare yourselves...Dawg fans are going to take over your bars and steal your women!

Do not be surprised that OU has 2 or 3 losses in 2009 and OSU is undefeated (cough, cough...sputter....cough). As long as T Boone keeps pouring in millions into the facilities there, OSU may end up being the premier school. I am not sure that in the end, they might be the class of the south (cough, sputter, cough...cough). (OU fan here).

How can this discussion go this far without someont mentioning that OSU couldn't stop anyone late last year? Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oregon put up a combined 150+ points or so in just three games. That's horrible.
Also they lose their second best offensive target behind Bryant, so the double teams will come more often this year.Nevermind that OSU hasn't been able to beat Texas in years, no matter how big the first half lead gets.
This is all wishful thinking. And the preseason top 10 is going to your heads.

Never in my life have I ever seen a sports write in more need of a reality check than you.
OSU won't beat UGA or Texas.
OU will be lucky to beat Texas with that sorry offensive line.
I am seriously shocked you get paid to write this BS.
