Game proves Sooners have respect to earn

OU's Willie Warren tries to fight off Nebraska's Cookie Miller (left) and Sek Henry for a loose ball Wednesday in Norman. CORY YOUNG/Tulsa World

NORMAN — Perhaps it's time for Oklahoma's basketball team to consider changing its nickname back from the Aretha Franklins to the Sooners.

For the past few games, coach Jeff Capel and his players have sounded a whole lot like Ms. Franklin as they repeatedly sang a version of the tune that made her famous — R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Capel went on a rant last week, explaining that he was tired of the critics who questioned if his team was worthy of its No. 6 national ranking.

He wasn't amused when the media and some fans brought up what appeared to be some OU shortcomings — suspect guard play, a lack of quality depth, questionable perimeter shooting, a lack of defensive purpose and a dependence on superstar sophomore Blake Griffin.

"Everyone talks about everyone else," said Capel, complaining about the lack of national attention his team has received. "We don't (even) get any respect in our own state."

See, there's Ms. Franklin's favorite word again.

So Capel wants respect? OK, coach, earn it.

And here's how: Win the Big 12 Conference championship or the league tournament (or both), get a No. 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and go deep in the Big Dance instead of losing by 30 points in the second round like last season.

Until then, cool it on playing the lack-of-respect card.

Oh, it'd also be a good idea to not let undersized, double-digit underdog Nebraska scare the bejesus out of you on your home court. That's what the Cornhuskers did to the Franklins, err, the Sooners, Wednesday night at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Yes, OU improved to an impressive 18-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big 12. But don't let the margin in OU's 72-61 win fool you. The Cornhuskers were up six at halftime and only down 57-55 with less than three minutes left in the contest.

Now, remember, this is a Nebraska team that is challenged big time in the height department. Husker coach Doc Sadler doesn't give serious playing minutes to anyone taller than 6-foot-5.

And yet there were the Huskers making the OU critics look prophetic in the first half. They outrebounded the much-taller Sooners, held OU's perimeter shooters to just one of their last nine attempts from 3-point range, limited OU's bench players to a single point, outworked them on defense, hit the 3-ball on offense when OU was slow to guard them and forced the Sooners totally out of their game plan.

At the half, Husker forward Ryan Anderson had 17 points. A nonstarter who was averaging 4.9 points a contest, Anderson took advantage of a lackadaisical Sooner defense by popping treys from deep in the corner before a defender could locate him.

Basketball can be a pretty simple game when you have a 6-10 stud like Griffin. When everyone who guards him is at least five inches shorter, it's wise to tell the big fellow to get down low on the block and go to work.

When Griffin launched his first shot from 3-point range, one got the idea that it was the Sooners who were showing a lack of respect. It sure looked like they were dissing their opponent when Griffin put up such a low-percentage shot when the shots from point-blank range were there for the taking by the national-player-of-the-year candidate.

Griffin didn't score his first field goal until nearly 12 minutes into the game. His monster slam with 8:17 left in the first half seemed to finally awaken Griffin to the fact he could score at will down low, which he proceeded to do the rest of the evening. That dunk was the first of nine consecutive shots Griffin made inside. Once he got his head into the game, Griffin took it over as he finished with 27 points and 18 rebounds.

"He's a great player," Sadler said of Griffin. "He's a load. He's a huge load."

But that was Sadler's game plan — let Griffin get his, but hold down the rest of the Sooners. And it almost worked, until guard Austin Johnson added nine second-half points to help put the pesky Huskers (12-5, 2-2) away.

"I didn't like the way we played the first half," Capel said. "We played in the first half, and we competed in the second half."

If Capel and Sooners want to reach their lofty goals, they better learn to compete for 60 minutes. If they do, they'll earn all the respect they can handle. How do new OSU defensive coordinator Bill Young and new New York Jets coach Rex Ryan tie into a dark period in OU football? I hope the Tulsa World doesn't pay you much money. If you want to stir a pot you can go somewhere else and do it. No Sooner fan wants to read your negative articles and this is the exact thing that Capel is fed up with. Chumps like you.

By the way, Dave, basketball games are 40 minutes, not 60 minutes. So much for your credibility.

Hate to pile on, Dave. Usually appreciate your lucid perspective. But this piece really doesn't make much sense as written. Did Capel snub you or something?

It makes total sense. Capel is the definition of hoops royalty. Parade All- American, 4 year starter at Duke, Dad is NBA exec and now he's at a place where the arena is full 3-4 times a year. He's doing a great job but does make you wonder why we hire a guy whose first time to ever be in our state was when he took the job... he's not used to not being THE show. Ask Tubbs and Sampson about it.

Looks to me like a certain writer and a certain coach got into a tiff and the writer is exacting his revenge. Can't help but notice that on the same night the Sooners made the plays in crunch time to pull out the win, two other top ten teams lost to unranked teams on their home court (Wake Forest & Michigan State). Guess they shouldn't get any respect either.

Perhaps the writer is expecting a bunch of quadruple-overtime games the rest of the year?

It's unbelievable how when 1 writer takes the stand that OU isn't PERFECT, the OU faithful suddenly start to whine.
GET OVER IT.

Dave - you bring up great points and I expect that OU will go far in the tournament this year but they're not a final four team.

ORU_TXAlum,

This is a post you made about a Sammy B. article.

I'm glad Florida one - they were the superior team last night and it was obvious that their own field IQ was much higher than that of the OU players.

Talk about IQ...how ironic. Please stir the pot some more so you can be on Dave's good side. Us Sooner fans don't speak negatively about your amazing teams. And by the way, make up your mind.

PhiDeltBeers,

"Florida one" - wow my friend.

I don't need to make up my mind. I think I have a pretty balanced view point of OU's program, unfortunately most OU fans don't.
Listen, Dave made a good point and while OU may be talented enough to go deep in the tournament, it doesn't mean they're mature enough to do it. There's a lot more that goes into have a good other than pure talent.

Oh and I appreciate you not talking negatively about "my amazing teams." Get your coach to come visit the Mabee Center and maybe we'll give you something to talk about.

ORU_TXAlum,

When your boys get to .500 ball come back and talk. The difference between OU fans And every other run of the mill team, is we don't believe in "moral victories." Maybe we just set our goals higher. Looks as if the majority of the posters agree that the article was uncalled for. Sooner fan, or not. If this was about ORU, I'd feel the same way. Just saying.

Any OU fan that doesn't see the glaring deficiencies in this team is dreaming- OU might make the final four or could easily lose in the first round- Sittler just points out what every realistic fan can already see. Those of you thinking we're a dominant team need to wake up.

Phi,

I think you're a fairly level head fan but I can't decide why you keep insisting on all these logical leaps. You should probably check the superiority attitude at the door because I don't know many fans, for any team, that really believes in a moral victory. The majority of the posters disagree with the article because the majority of the people reading the sports pages are OU fans.

You guys shouldn't make assumptions about a writer's personal vendetta against your university and its' basketball coach, no matter how much you may think you have the "inside track."

OU has a very good basketball team this year. Before any team is a champion, in an arena they aren't usually known for, they prove themselves.
This is OU's chance...and they have a very good chance.

You guys should take what Dave said as more motivation to cheer your team on in the NCAA tournament. Instead it appears you guys are reacting like someone took away your Superman doll and slapped you on the wrist.

ORU_TXAlum,

I guess you just don't get it. Never in any of my posts did I say that I disagreed with any of the facts that Sittler pointed out. Did I? As a matter of fact, I don't believe OU is a top 5 team. The only thing that upset me was the unprofessional calling out of Capel. It was completely uncalled for. It was a classless thing for a public writer to do. I never said anything about OU's record or even how far they go in the tourney. So please don't try to read between the lines and put words in my mouth. You simply asumed that someone stepped on my toes and I'm whining about it. I'm only voicing my opinion to Sittler's motives about the article. Then you come on here and take everthing out of context and don't look too good doing it. Come again.
