Nebraska desires seasons to celebrate, again

HAS ANYONE informed Larry the Cable Guy that liquor is now taboo inside the luxury suite he owns at Nebraska's Memorial Stadium?
It's usually not a good sign when a booze ban is the biggest news to come out of a team's spring practice. But that's what made national headlines before Nebraska's Red-White Spring game, when athletic director Tom Osborne confirmed a severe case of alcohol poisoning occurred in one of the skyboxes last season.
"The person was in pretty bad shape," Osborne told the Omaha World-Herald.
The Husker Nation awaits reaction from Larry the Cable Guy, one of the country's hottest stand-up comedians and a diehard Big Red fan who purchased a suite in the north end zone.
The Cable Cornhusker probably isn't pleased. After all, when his latest tour hit Tulsa for a performance at the BOK Center in February, it was called, "Eat, Drink and Be Larry."
If you've ever caught his act live or on television, it's not difficult to imagine Larry's response going something like this: "You'd drink heavy too, if you had to watch that team play every week."
Yes, Nebraska tied Missouri for the Big 12's North Division title last season at 5-3, and finished 9-4 overall after defeating Clemson in the Gator Bowl.
Nebraska also had a three-game losing streak and gave up the most points in its storied rivalry with Oklahoma when the Sooners whipsawed the Huskers, 62-28.
Embarrassed fans were reaching for the nearest flask when first-year coach Bo Pelini pitched a game-long fit on Owen Field. That profanity-laced outburst came just weeks after a similar temper tantrum produced a pivotal penalty in a 35-30 home loss to Virginia Tech.
Ask Osborne how long four-loss seasons cut it in Lincoln. Talk about a tough crowd. Larry the Cable Guy hasn't faced anything on stage like Osborne endured his first few seasons after replacing legendary Bob Devaney.
Osborne nearly had his Hall of Fame career end before it started when he was on the brink of getting fired after three consecutive three-loss seasons. The same thing happened to Devaney, who felt intense pressure after back-to-back 6-4 records.
Nebraska's knowledgeable fans deserve their reputation as some of the nation's best. But their tolerance for losing is on par with the alcohol tolerance level of that drunk dude responsible for the new luxury suite liquor law.
After four unpleasant seasons with Bill Callahan, Husker supporters undoubtedly will give the likeable Pelini an extended honeymoon period. Unlike the often aloof Callahan, Pelini's blue-collar background and personality are a better fit for a down-to-earth, unpretentious fan base.
But the day will come when those fans will borrow the phrase that made Larry the Cable Guy famous when they tell Pelini it's time to "Git-R-Done."
Could 2009 be the season when Nebraska once again becomes Nebraska?
Goodness knows, the beleaguered North Division badly needs Nebraska to return to those glory days when it was contending and winning national titles under Devaney and Osborne.
Traditionalists also yearn for the return of the OU-Nebraska contest being one of the game's best rivalries. It lost its luster on OU's side before Bob Stoops restored it.
Pelini, who spent one season on Stoops' staff, is now on the other end. After his rocky debut last year in Norman, he gets another shot at making the series competitive when the Huskers host the Sooners on Nov. 7.
Pelini's second spring as Nebraska's head coach didn't get off to a great start. Quarterback Patrick Witt, who was supposed to contend for the starting job, quit the team.
"We made some progress through the spring," Pelini said in a teleconference. "But it became obvious that we have a long way to go."
And a short time to get there. Pelini has four months to find a quarterback to replace Joe Ganz, who signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Redskins after going undrafted last weekend.
Little-used junior Zac Lee, the leader coming out of spring ball, certainly has the bloodlines. His father, Bob Lee, was nicknamed "The General" by bombastic sportscaster Howard Cosell when he played quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons.
But the game's most important position remains tenuous enough that Pelini considered adding Greg Paulus, the former Duke basketball player who has a year of football eligibility left and is shopping himself around.
Former Miami (Fla.) starter Robert Marve, who attended the Red-White Spring Game in his search of a place to transfer, still had Nebraska on his short list as of Tuesday.
Pelini ended spring drills by giving each player a detailed plan of what to work until the start of fall camp.
"They need to follow up and stay with it and keep working to get better," Pelini said. "I think we have a mature enough group of kids who understand what's at stake, and we'll be able to get that done."
Get that done, or Git-R-Done. As long as it happens, Larry the Cable Guy and Huskers everywhere will drink to that.

Couldn't tell if Sittler was being critical or optimistic about the Huskers.
But to answer his question, Yes, 2009 IS the season Nebraska becomes NEBRASKA!

Historical note: from 1940 to Devaney's arrival in 1962, Nebraska had exactly 2 winning seasons. Of course, since then NU has had exactly 2 losing seasons. Bill Snyder is rightfully given a ton of credit for his turnaround at K State, but Devaney's impact at Nebraska has proved to be much more sustained and ultimately far more significant.

Nebraska and Dr. Tom made a critical error hiring Bo Pellini instead of Turner Gill. I'll say it until Gill's the HC at NU. He's the ultimate leader whether he's playing or coaching.
He might never get the position at UNL but he'll blow it up somewhere bigger than Buffalo, no offense to UB.

Yeah I can't really tell if you are being critical or not, either.
I do know one thing though, Nebraska will be back. You discussed how Nebraska gave up the most points in it's storied rivalry with Oklahoma this past year? How about the time Oklahoma gave up 73 and 69 points to Nebraska in consecutive seasons, and now Oklahoma is back to being one of the power houses.
Anybody who claims Nebraska won't be back should just take a look at what Oklahoma did after their tribulations in the 90's. Not saying you did necessarily, but anybody with that notion is going to have another thing coming.

What a waste of several good minute of reading time. This moron obviously does not know anything about Nebraska football, has not read anything about the accomplishments that the team has made during spring ball, or the optimism that is surrounding the team since Callasham was sent packing. The Big Red will be back sooner than later and you can then have something to write about. You obviously are a good bit behind in knowing most things about Nebraska football.

Outstanding job, well done! Larry the CG is giving a 4th of July show in Memorial Stadium at $4 a seat, and bring your own flask. Youngstown, Ohio has made a great contribution to the coaching ranks of the Big 12 Conference. The Stoops and Pelini families, in particular, are to be thanked. Nebraska has a redshirt freshman from Cardinal Mooney High who could be the next Frank Solich from Ohio.

Ask a Husker Fan living in Oklahoma....times have been rough. I love Big12 football and I miss the big OU/Neb rivalry. Im hoping Bo and the Huskers can at least stay with the sooners and the rest of the Gun slingers that have dominated the Big 12 as of recent. It wont take long for Nebraska to be back in a dominant position but I dont think it will be this year. I do think Nebraska will probably end up in th Big 12 Championship but I think they will probably lose to Texas or OU, but stranger things have happend.....Im ready for football season.

Mr. Sittler,
I acknowledge your former association with the Lincoln Star Journal and appreciate the perspective shared in your assessment of the up-and-coming Cornhusker program. I am a native Nebraskan and avid fan located in Indianapolis and know the sensitivity of our fan base for the slightest criticism of our team. I do not agree with comments that the most significant news coming out of Big Red's spring football was the ban on booze. Unlike the ridiculous environment in Boulder, liquor has always been illegal within Memorial stadium. The strict enforcement of the rules is the only change. Rules are implimented in a futile attempt to thwart natural selection. I say, let nature take it's course and let Larry have his beer! Here's the real news flash...The BLACKSHIRTS are BACK, spelling doom for Big XII foes. GO BIG RED!!!

You know what Sittler? Stupes only won it all, one time- when he beat the Bowden, the only guy who chokes worse in big games. Think about it... only Bowden chokes worse than Stooopes, and he's won it twice.
Nobody here is running smack about the loser coaches you hired after Bury Switzer was run out of town, or how much he drinks, or how bad we beat you before Stoops.
We don't count how many years you have been on probation for cheating, or how Stoops has turned you into the Buffalo Bills of the BCS.
We actually like it when you beat the orange cows in the Red River Shootout, we like J.Mildren in the game of the century, and we are ashamed when you lose your bowl games. You make the Big12 look bad when it counts.

Rome was not built in a day. Pelini will get at least the 4 years Callahan did to right the ship. Eventually, of course, he will have to win--and win big--but for now, Nebraska fans are pretty happy with 9-4 and a nice bowl win coming off a losing season. With the talent Pelini had--especially on defense--it was a great effort. Plus, unlike Callahan, Pelini is not doing his level best to alienate the fan base and the media.
Sure, the Huskers had a couple of bad losses to teams that had far superior talent. However, they were also two very close losses away from 11-2, and one of those losses was in OT to a team that was a BCS contender to the end, and the other team WAS a BCS team. Their other two losses (the bad ones) were also to a BCS team and a team that was considered to be of that quality at least early in the season.

MJMW, uh....you might want to make a note that Dave Sittler, while he sounds like a homer for the Sooners actually graduated from UNL which makes him a Husker. I'd be very surprised if that is not where his loyalties lie.
huskerbb, You and I coud do a better job than Callahan so Bo is going to do better than that. ; )

I dismissed this article in the first 3 or so lines when he wrote:
“The Husker Nation awaits reaction from Larry the Cable Guy, one of the country's hottest stand-up comedians and a diehard Big Red fan who purchased a suite in the north end zone.”
Don’t get me wrong I like Larry the Cable Guy and am proud to call him a fellow Husker fan but, “one of the country’s hottest stand-up comedians”?? Like I said, I like Larry but he’s not exactly WHAT Husker fans hang their every breath on.
“The Husker nation awaits reaction from Larry the Cable Guy”
Sorry brother, The Husker Nation awaits reaction from only two people one is Dr. Tom and the other a Bo Pelini!! I’m sure there are many Husker fans that would like to know what Larry thinks but, that’s not what our spring was about! For this classless piece of journalism to say that was the biggest news to come out of spring for the Huskers is like saying………the biggest news to come out of Oklahoma’s spring was the 28,000 people that showed up, and that Rhett Bomar got drafted!
Personally I think we need to make restrictions on who can use the term “Husker Nation” it is sacred. He clearly has no idea what being a Husker Fan is all about. As for the drunken Husker fans that he seems so found of…………I believe it was at Owen field in Norman, in 2000 that I had about 78000 sooner fans throwing beer cans at me and my brother, while spewing it all over the streets! At least in Nebraska we respect our beer enough to drink it!!!

Avid Husker / Sooner fan since 1948. Started hitchhiking back and forth between Omaha & Lincoln at age 10. Had Nebraska season tickets for over 40 yrs. Also followed nebraska team to all away games for a long period of time. I really loved the annual shootouts between OU & NU. Broke my heart to see the annual clash end. Second only to the NU fans were the the OU fans. The OU people were always so accomodating at home. They were humble winning and so congratulatory losing. I very seldom noticed that with any other fan base. I look forward to many good games between the two teams. OU keep on winning (except against NU of course).

Just a little bit of info for you Dave, Dan Whitney (Larry the Cable Guy) does not drink. Just because he looks the part don't just assume he is going to throw a fit because alcohol has been banned in Memorial Stadium.
Do a little bit more research next time Dave before you go writing stuff you don't really know anything about.

BTW, the phrase "Get-R-Done" was actually coined by Tom Osborne who said that to his players all the time. Larry the Cable Guy is a big fan of Osborne and the Huskers, so hence, the credit of that statement has always been given to Osborne. Lighten up some of you Husker fans, Dave Sittler is a great writer...don't take everything so seriously, geez!! This isn't even football season, be happy they are still interested in writing about us. GBR!

My first read on this made me wonder where this guy gets his info? BO says there's work to do? No kidding. He always says that. I had the impression this spring, from reading the unending Husker articles, that the there is a quiet confidence among the coaches and players. I always assumed that a columnist like this guy relies heavily on solicited input from Husker scribes like Sipple, Shatel, and Christenson. I couldn't believe they gave the impression of what he wrote above. So then I wondered why he hadn't gotten their opinions.
Then I realized he simply wrote this knowing that myself and a hundred Husker fans would respond. Probably had a bet with someone in Huskerland or maybe the guy that writes the obits for the Tulsa World. Anyway, nice job. You succeeded. Oh, and by the way, that OU-NU game last year was a fluke. You were the better the team but the start and subsequent score was a fluke. See you in Lincoln. Maybe you can sneak Larry your flask as we pound OU.

I am continually surprised to see how many people overlook the obvious. I assume Mr. Sittler isnt an idiot and neither are numerous other journalists that cover college football. There is one reason Pelini is HC, defense. As powerful as his offenses were in the mid 90's it was the defenses that held Miami, the fun-n-gun, and Peyton all in check. So while everyone concentrates on who the QB will be, ATM we have the projected #1 draft pick on the DL who was a bust before Pelini came to town. Motivation and good teaching can do wonders, I hope. BTW, good luck Sooners- gotta love the Big 12!
