Close look shows how OSU will be 11-0

THE FOOTBALL BRANCH extended here more than two months ago better be connected to a mighty oak tree.

In case you missed it, an olive branch wasn't offered. It was me climbing out on a limb and predicting Oklahoma State could be 11-0 when the Cowboys roll into Norman next November.

An oak standing at least 100 feet was needed to hold all the critics and naysayers who responded negatively to that column.

Oh, ye of little faith.

That's OK. Only true believers are allowed on this limb. Those who are open-minded enough to acknowledge that an 11-0 start isn't a mission-impossible situation for the Pokes.

I'm happy to report that the need for a stronger branch may soon be required. A couple of heavy hitters have joined me.

"You went out on a limb with the 11-0 call," Boone Pickens wrote. "I am out there with you, so you are not alone. But I don't write a column."

Yeah, I know, the guy whose name is on OSU's stadium will always believe his beloved Cowboys will win them all. But this particular Cowboy can make "Big Tex" at the Texas State Fair look like a midget, so he's always welcome to shimmy up my tree.

Matt Hayes does write a column. And the college football expert for The Sporting News has joined the Texas billionaire and this go-for-broke Tulsan out on the branch that has no room for the faint-hearted.

Asked to pick five teams that will show the most improvement in the win column from 2008 to 2009, Hayes has OSU No. 4 on his list. He predicts the Cowboys will improve from 9-4 to 12-1, losing only to Oklahoma.

"The difference this fall will be the impact of new defensive coordinator Bill Young," the perceptive Hayes wrote. "He knows the league (remember Kansas, 2007?) and the Cowboys have speed and athleticism on that side of the ball."

Still not convinced? OK, fine, let's take a brief look at OSU's first 11 games:

Sept. 5, Georgia: These are not the Bulldogs who whipsawed OSU in Athens in 2007. The Pokes will be jacked up going in, and a win could ignite a season-long emotional roll.

Sept. 12, Houston: Can't let those sky-high emotions crash in this one. Former OU assistant Kevin Sumlin will know what to expect when he visits Stillwater with a salty bunch of Cougars.

Sept. 19, Rice: Second C-USA team in as many weeks. It'd be more fun if it were Tulsa instead of the Owls trying to break up this tree-hugging business.

Sept. 26, Grambling State: Luckily for OSU, this team doesn't play anywhere near as well as its renowned marching band.

Oct. 10, at Texas A&M: An open date before the Big 12 opener is perfect as the Cowboys finally hit the road for the first time.

Oct. 17, Missouri: Young Tigers are not strong enough to avenge last season's stunning, damaging loss to the Pokes.

Oct. 24, Baylor: No longer just a one-man team with quarterback Robert Griffin, the Bears still need a few more talented bodies to compete in the rugged South Division.

Oct. 31, Texas: Halloween is perfect for OSU to finally put an end to the spooky, mysterious hex the Longhorns have had on the Cowboys.

Nov. 7, at Iowa State: Auburn and ISU swapped coaches, with Gene Chizik leaving Ames and Paul Rhoads departing Auburn. The SEC got the best of the Big 12 yet again.

Nov. 14, Texas Tech: Two big things happened the last time Tech visited OSU in 2007. The Cowboys won a thriller, and you've been in a two-year coma if you don't know what else transpired.

Nov. 19, Colorado: Zac Robinson zapped his home state school last November in Boulder, and OSU's senior quarterback will bash the Buffs again.

If you paid attention, you realized the Cowboys will be home on the range a lot in 2009, playing an unheard of eight games inside their renovated, sparkling, big-time stadium.

If you combine OSU top-heavy home schedule with an explosive offense, Young's defensive expertise and toss in the luck and lack of key injuries every team needs, you have a combination that could add up to 11-0.

College football, of course, plays 12 games these days. Bedlam at OU on Nov. 28th is OSU's final regular-season contest. That column more than two months ago envisioned both Bedlam teams being 11-0 on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Who wins that one? That's a prediction for another day. But I do know that my new best pen pal, Mr. Pickens, fired the first Bedlam shot with a little gamesmanship by telling the Associated Press that OU should be the preseason favorite to win the BCS national title.

Nothing like putting some added pressure on OSU's bitter rival by killing it with kindness and backhanded compliments.

So, with the OSU-Georgia opener still weeks away, there is still plenty of time to join the three of us out on that limb. There is, however, one more requirement: Do not bring a chainsaw.

Hey Not Again, if OSU loses to Georgia AND Colorado this year, I will eat that the computer that your dumb response was typed on. OSU might lose to UT, OU and the bowl game but not to Colorado and Georgia.

The easiest prediction in all of sports is that OSU will be college football's biggest bust of 2009. It is almost comical that people are thinking or writing that they'll be 11-0 going into Norman! That's rich! First of all, you are right, Georgia is down, but even a down Georgia team will always have better athletes than Oklahoma State.

It sounds real cute to say that OSU will beat Texas on haloween, but guess what?? It ain't happenin'! Heck, these predictions are so far fetched, you may as well go all the way and predict 12-0 and beat OU!

Here's a prediction you can take to the bank...OSU will lose to Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma and one other (take your pick between A&M, Mizzou, Tech, or CU...can't tell you which one, but they'll blow one of those four).

That would make OSU 8-4...respectably good? Yes. Dominant? Not by a long shot. Has Griffin Television bought the Tulsa World?? Heck, I can't tell if this column written by Dave Holcomb, Dave Hunziker, or Dave Sittler??? Strap on a bright orange tie and we might not be able to tell the difference!! Pistols Firing boys!!!!

Every year all of the Oklahoma media (Tulsa and OKC) predict OSU will win more than they actually do. One of these years they will probably get it right. The problem with OSU having a very good year is they will find themselves in a better bowl playing the likes of an Oregon instead of an Indiana (this isn't basketball) and we know what will happen then. The love affair that the media has with OSU football is just the media being politically correct so they won't be labeled OU biased.

Heaven forbid we actually have a positive take on the team. Golden, you bash OSU and the Hurricane whom I cheer for would be Baylor if they played in the Big 12. Don't shoot off like you guys are world beaters.

You are correct on Gibbs, Blake and Davie, as Assistant Coaches and NOT Head Coaches. However, let's give Gundy this year. He has the schedule and the apparent talent.

Doesn't matter. Even if Pickens State goes undefeated they still won't fill their stadium even after blackmailing fans of other universities to buy their season tickets. I guess even Pickens' money can't buy fans.

I am a Sooner, as you all know. BUT, let's be fair here. I hope they can go undefeated, up until the OU game. It would be great for the BIG 12, not to mention our STATE.

Yep, as nauseous at it makes me, a have to agree with jtOU and Arby in that an undefeated OsU would be best. Like last years game with TTU, it would be a rockin' atmosphere inside the stadium, and the college football world would be tuned in for sure.

My favorite is how the local sports radio and tv guys refer to him almost 100% of the time as "Mr. Pickens". That's beautiful...uhh, not! Actually, it's totally ridiculous, call the man T. Boone just like the reporters on CNBC or CNN Money do...and don't give me the "respect" thing, if that's the case, then always refer to John Wooden as "Mr. Wooden" or call Nolan Richardson "Mr. Richardson". It's amazing how the Tulsa media has made this guy out to be the Messiah. Look, the man is rich, very rich, but he's not God.

yeah everyone knows that ou fans dont think osu will have an 11-0 season but there just worried about having competition in the state now. OSU might not go undeafeted and ou prolly will because they play noone in the preseason this year but we all know even you ou fans that they will have that one loss of the season in the national championship it doesnt matter who they play in that game.

Golden Hurricane, your rants are growing stale and your little man syndrome stinks like bad cologne.

Everything depends on the first game. Beat Georgia and I think my Pokes have the capability of indeed going 11-0 into the Bedlam game. However, I've been an OSU fan long enough to know to just wait and be cautiously optimistic.

MexiMike,

I'm not trying to go on any rant, I am just not a fan of hero worship and I think that's what Pickens gets. Sure, thank the man for his contributions, but there's no need to treat him like a dignitary or deity.

Three points:
Arby, Jt and LTS - I'm with you. It's good for the Big XII, good for the state and good for the schools if we're both 11-0 going into that game. Your stadium would be electric should that happen.
Woodman - it is sad families were hurt, no doubt. But I've never heard Mr. Pickens claim to be a saint. Now, do you have any idea how oppressed our entire state has been since statehood because of the Gaylords? EK had a virtual monopoly of the OKC media until his death in 1974. The Gaylord family has been almost as generous to OU through the years, yet there is dead silence (not surprising since they owned the media) about their manipulation of our capitalistic system.
Golden Hur - We also refer to Henry Iba "Mr. Iba." But I guess you wouldn't know that. Judging by your in-your-face barbs, you're not into respect. But your comments are good; clearly, you and your ilk are getting nervous. You know our Cowboys are closing the gap fast and you're getting very nervous. This is good entertainment.

Hey Stogdiddy, you obviously don't live in the OKC market or listen to the sports animal. I can't find one media member who picked them to win 9 because most picked them to win more! Traber is fair about how he picks OSU's win total. So is Eishbach, but Craig Humphries, Dean Blevins, and many others have historically predicted OSU to have a better season than they have accomplished. Virtually, every one in the state media picked OSU to finish 3rd in the south and they finished 4th. Calling me a dufus does not make your point.

OKC Dave, (7/12/2009 10:27:44 PM)
OK, dryounster, I'll call your bluff. I live in Oklahoma City and listen to the Sports Animal. Are you saying Craig Humphries, Dean Blevins, or any "and others" predicted O-State to win 10 games? Do the "and others" mean Bob Barry, Carey Murdock, Mark Rodgers, Pat Jones, Barry Tramel, JohnOn Rohde, any of the Morning Animals, or even Doug Gottlieb? Which one of them said O-State would win 10 games? None of them did. You're wanting to remember something that didn't happen, bud. I challenge you to call any of them on the air and confirm your belief. They will deny it.

I'll agree with you on-air Sports Animals blatantly say politically correct things to suggest they follow OSU sports, but only Pat Jones might know who our second team offensive line is. Or Mike Gundy's wife's name. Or who the Lewis of "Lewis Field" was. (And most all of them would know the OU equivalents off the tops of their heads.) They're all OU homers and none of them will roam far from their OU feeding trough. BBJ is the most objective and Blevins will surprise me occasionally. But they're all OU through-and-through (save Jones and Gottlieb, who is the most legitimate because his career doesn't depend on the OU machine) and as the Cowboys get closer to being a serious contender, their "generosity" will go out the window.

Just like I said about Golden Hur, Sooner fans are getting nervous. And I predict Craig Humphries and Al Eschbach will be the most obvious Sports Animal OU kissers when it gets really serious. Which it will.
