Will role as Cowboys' spoiler be OU's spark?

LUBBOCK, Texas — Quick question: When was the last time Oklahoma entered a Bedlam Series game trying to spoil Oklahoma State's season?
Quicker answer: How about never. At least not in the modern era...anytime post World War II.
For more than 60 years, it's always been OSU trying to knock OU out of the national championship race or a major bowl bid. The closest it came to a role reversal was in 1976, the one and only season OSU won a conference championship in either the Big Eight or Big 12. And while the Pokes whipped the Sooners that season, the two still ended up sharing the Big Eight title.
Don't look now, but that heretofore unheard-of scenario is a reality. It unfolds Saturday at OU's Memorial Stadium when the Sooners are forced to play spoiler against the Cowboys in one of college football's best rivalries.
And, really, a Bedlam victory would be the only thing left for this dazed and confused OU team to hang its helmet on. Before yesterday, OU hoped a Bedlam win would knock OSU out of its first BCS bowl bid and propel the Sooners into the Cotton Bowl, which is considered the best of the non-BCS bowl games.
OU fans no longer have to worry about going to Dallas-Fort Worth to watch their beloved Sooners lose for the third time this season. Texas Tech took care of that by embarrassing OU yesterday at Jones Stadium, 41-13.
The good news is that the Sooners (6-5, 4-3 Big 12) could possibly still land in the Alamo Bowl if they whip the Cowboys (9-2, 6-1) in Bedlam, with a kickoff of 11:30 a.m. set for Owen Field. If not there, the Sun Bowl is also a potential destination.
The really, really bad news for OU is that they'll have to either go to San Antonio or El Paso for those bowls. They won't be able to persuade the good folks at either bowl to move their game to Norman.
In case you hadn't noticed, these Sooners are not road warriors. When they've hit the road, the road has almost always hit back, with yesterday's blowout loss dropping OU to 1-5 away from home this season.
So if OU wants to prevent its first losing record in 11 seasons under coach Bob Stoops, it needs to spoil OSU's Fiesta Bowl dream. A loss to the Pokes would mean the Sooners would stand 6-6 when they venture out of town for the bowl appearance, with an excellent chance to finish 6-7.
The Sooners would have laughed in your facemask had you suggested four months ago that they would be on the brink of a losing season.
"If you would have told me we'd be 6-5 right now, with our Heisman-winning quarterback (Sam Bradford) coming back and all the star power we had coming back," linebacker Travis Lewis said, "I would have been shocked."
Injuries to Bradford and some of those other stars have played a significant role in OU going from a BCS title contender to an also-ran in the Big 12's South Division.
But the injury factor can't be the entire scapegoat for this troubled season. The mystifying lack of success on the road has to fall on Stoops and his staff, who have lost games when they were the better team. And it's not just this season: Stoops' record in his team's last 33 games played out of state is 16-17.
"I can't put my finger on why we can't win on the road," receiver Ryan Broyles said. "I'm at loss for words."
This mediocre road record started when Southern Cal bushwhacked OU 55-19 in January 2005. Until yesterday, that loss in the BCS national title game was the most humiliating road loss.
But the 28-point beatdown the Red Raiders put on OU ranks right up there. Things got so bad that Tech players, coaches and fans joined in to taunt the Sooners by dancing a jig early in the fourth quarter when they were up 34-6.
The defense's uninspired performance left both the coaches and the players dazed and shaking their heads. Stoops said his team never quit, but acknowledged that it didn't show up to play a game that still had a lot of pride on the line.
In the locker room afterward, according to his players, Stoops shouldered much of the blame.
"He said we were outcoached and outplayed," said Broyles.
Perhaps this new spoiler approach against OSU will be the spark the beleaguered Sooners need. That, and they will be fighting to not become the first Stoops-coached team to lose six games.
"If you can't get fired up for Bedlam, regardless of what your record is," Lewis said, "then you shouldn't be playing football."
And also regardless of what role you're playing in Bedlam 2009.

That headline made me do a double take and then I realized just how bad it has gotten this year for the Sooners. A win over OSU just to have a winning record...oh, how the mighty has fallen. But I am a TU fan, so I guess I don't have much room to talk. At least OU can still go to a bowl, even if it is a crappy one.

If OU does a receive a Bowl invitation (perhaps the Toilet Bowl ?) I would hope they would turn it down.
They have embarrassed themselves enough for 1 year.

Sittler, if someone had told me at the beginning of the year that OSU would be 9-2 after loosing Dez Bryant and Kendall Hunter for most of the season, and our starting quarter back for one game, I would have told them they were crazy. OU continues to whine about the loss of players (where is the depth) and OSU just continues to take care of business.

Question? Has Stoops ever fired a coach since he's been at OU? Stoops is his own worst enemy! He creates a situation where he's to good of buddies with these guys an when it comes to chewing tail,he can't do it.The first thing they teach you in mangement is don't date the help an don't be come friends with the employees,Bob is to good friends with the employees. The only people I know that think these 2 cordinators are the next coming to jesus christ is the 2 sports personalities in OKC.(TRAB AN ASH)I remember when they use to say, there going to be gone.Someone is going to offer them a head coaching postion, their still here. Not to knock the boys to hard,i do like their show, but I honestly believe they are the only ones that believe that.I don't believe these coaches they got right know can coach on the fly. When is the last time they were behind an came back an won a legit game against a good team? They either got a lot more talent than you, blow you out,or they get beat.I travel quite often an boy do i catch it,thats fine,i'm a big boy an I can take it,but the worst thing about it is their right, the bcs is for whatefer reason been really good to OU,we've played in games we probably shouldn't of been in.(example:friend called the other day,(nebraska fan,hey rick, beens we beat you last night,do you think that elminates you from the national championship game this year.)There is saracasium like that all over the country about OU.I know, who cares. AFTER ALL THAT,BORN SOONER FAN,ALWAYS WILL BE A SOONER FAN.BOOMER SOONER.

It's tough to beat the Sooners at home no matter how they are currently playing away from home. We will have to keep it close and maybe pull away at the end.
GO POKES, BEAT OU !!!!

Stoops management style reminds me of Saturday Nite Live. Michaels was tired of loosing the excellent talent he had over the years requiring his new people to sign a 5 year agreement.
Well look at what he got. He got a bunch of no-talent boobs looking for a paycheck. Before we had a group of firepi$$ers that got the job done.
Nobody is poaching OU for coaches anymore. Stoopid can sit in his easy chair, and cash the checks.
Coaching turnover demonstrates success, it means new blood, new strategies and hard work for the Head coach.

It's hard for a defense, even a prideful one, to continue to give maximum effort on the field when they know their offense is going to doom them anyway. The Sooners' inability to run the ball, catch the ball, and throw the ball is the most discouraging thing I have witnessed from an OU team.

One other thing - those throwback uniforms should be thrown back for good. They were as ugly as OU's play.

As if anyone on either side of the ball needs a spark to get motivated for Bedlam. This from the same guy that predicted both teams would be 11-0 going into the game.

Either Stoops sachets his big, arrogant, pompous, horses a/$ out of Norman or they recruit a three sport athlete to come in and run the offense. No athleic QB equates to a destiny of predictable losses.
Gotta Run...

Bob Stoops has won a National Championship...Gundy has won it...?
Bob Stoops has won six Big 12 Championships...Gundy has won it...?
Bob Stoops has won the Big 12 south division title seven times...Gundy has won it...?
I will take Bob on an off year anyday over Gundy on a great year (by OSU standards).
When you win something (a championship) call me. Until then...enjoy our shadow.
You can have the golf and wrestling titles...I will enjoy the 7 national championships in Div. 1 football. Go Sooners!

Stuck on that "athletic QB" thing aren't you, egl? How "athletic" were Heupel and White and Bradford? Seems like they were all fairly successful. You mean like Robinson? Oh wait, he got knocked out running. Like the guy at Baylor? Oops, he's hurt too. Dual-threat also means: twice as likely your season could go south by your QB going out. You need good linemen to protect your QB. Remember last year? I guess not. Unless they bring back the wishbone or completely change their offensive philosophy, don't hold your breath.

Heupel, White and Bradford were all great QB's for the era-time they played in with the supporting cast they were on the field with. Football is ever evolving and playbooks continually change. I don't suggest that OU recruit the next Tim Tebow and engage in "high-energy" running back type collisions with QB gear on.
What I lean toward is a QB who has the athleticism to roll out with explosiveness, rifle a ball 40 yards and at least be able to improvise when the the pocket collapses. D-lineman are so athletic these days that you can't stand there for 4-5 seconds and not be mobile. This becomes more evident when you cannot initiate a running game to keep the D-line honest. Without the run you must rely on an athletic QB to buy time for routes to develope.

So you PLAN on not having a line you can run behind? The problem is the LINE, not the QB. It's not complicated. If your line is not good at pass protection or run blocking it doesn't matter much who you put under center.
