TU must believe it can pull off a shocker
Tulsa Head Coach Todd Graham stays on the field with his team during pre-game of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 in Albuquerque, N.M. at University Stadium. (Craig Fritz / AP Photo)

FORMER TULSA COACH Dave Rader believed the Golden Hurricane had enough players and the motivation to pull off a stunning upset of Oklahoma in 1996.
He later admitted the biggest job he had that week was convincing TU it could win.
Tulsa coach Todd Graham will have a similar role this week as TU gets ready for a high-profile game at OU that would be the most significant Tulsa victory since that stunner 13 years ago.
Of course, these Sooners are far better than those Sooners, and this Golden Hurricane team is a lot better than it was in 1996. Both OU and TU finished with losing records in 1996.
But there are striking similarities in that Oklahoma has not played at peak form yet this season and Tulsa seems to be playing with a high level of confidence.
Some things never change. Oklahoma still has better players, and far more of them, than Tulsa.
It would take a few miracles, such as the 99-yard TD pass that TU completed in 1996, for Tulsa to win this game.
Yet it would be foolish for Oklahoma to believe this will not be a challenge.
If Tulsa goes to Norman believing it can play with the Sooners, and plays at peak form, it is not out of the question that this could be a game.
Not likely. Just possible.
Tulsa should have plenty of motivation other than the usual desire to beat an in-state rival and national power.
This is Tulsa's chance to prove that the TU football revival, now in its seventh year since Steve Kragthorpe breathed life back into the Golden Hurricane, is more than just victories over weaker conference opponents.
Yes, TU did beat a ranked team last year (Ball State in the GMAC Bowl). But, for the most part, Tulsa has failed to win its most significant games against high-profile opponents during this most recent stretch of football success.
Tulsa is 8-0 against nonconference teams from non-BCS leagues under Graham. Teams like New Mexico, a 44-10 victim on Saturday night in Albuquerque, have been no problem for TU in the last two years.
But it has been more than a decade since TU last beat a team, any team, from a BCS league such as the Big 12 (1998 over Oklahoma State).
Oklahoma must win this game to have any shot at a BCS bowl. Tulsa would love to win this game to be mentioned in the debate for a BCS bowl.
So far, Boise State (over Oregon), BYU (over Oklahoma) and Houston (over Oklahoma State) have tossed their hats into the BCS discussion from the non-BCS leagues. Tulsa would love to join that group.
It is hard to put a finger on just where Tulsa is after two games. Yes, the Golden Hurricane has won twice. And TU's defense has been much better than in recent years.
But those defensive gems have come against two of the worst offensive teams in the country. Tulane and New Mexico will struggle to score all season.
And Tulsa has not been sharp on offense, despite the lopsided scores. New Mexico completely wiped out Tulsa's running game and put quarterback G.J. Kinne under a heavy rush throughout the game in Albuquerque.
Oklahoma has infinitely better defensive players than New Mexico.
What one doesn't know is how Oklahoma's offense will react if challenged. Obviously, the Sooners did not play well against BYU, before and after Sam Bradford was injured. The guess here is that Tulsa's defense is at least comparable to BYU.
Plus, nothing should be assumed by OU's blowout of Idaho State.
The national and Oklahoma City media have been quick to lump Tulsa in with Idaho State.
This much we know to be true. Tulsa is not Idaho State.
Getting TU's players to believe they are good enough to shock the college football world will be Graham's challenge this week.

I hope Stoopsie is thinking the same way you are, Klein.
You are obviously an OU homer.
We'll see how "not likely" TU's upset will be on Saturday.
That's why they play the game and not just let you dictate the score.

Thanks Klein for the great bulletin board material for TU to post. You don't believe in them, but the Golden Hurricane definitely believe in each other. Please keep the columns coming all week, great stuff for motivating TU to a win. Just want to read what you'll have to say next week.

John, you just reported the facts. Now TU will need to change the trend and prove to the OKC and National Media as well as some T.W. writers that the state of Oklahoma have 3 formable football programs.

i didn't see anything wrong or demeaning towards TU in the article. The TU head coach said pretty much the same things after their last game.

I agree with GoldenDriller1. You reported the facts and I a still unsure of Tulsa offensive line - they allowed 8 sacks in two games? TU's o-line must step it up big time. It is possible, but as you said, they must believe themselves.

Tulsa's defense forced Landry Jones into three interceptions and G.J. Kinne threw three TD passes and ran for another as the University of Tulsa upset the Oklahoma Sooners yesterday 38-24 in Norman.
Jones also lost a fumble as Tulsa's linebackers swarmed into the backfield on a number of occasions to keep Jones on his heels. TU was also able to limit big plays by the Sooners running backs...
That's how I envision it...make it happen, TU! ; )

For TU to have ANY shot at a mere BCS ranking it will have to beat OU and Boise State both.

Good article. I think Tulsa has the weapons to beat OU. They just can't make mistakes and HAVE TO take advantage of OU's mistakes. Look for a high offensive game .

Beating OU in Norman two times in my lifetime sure would be wonderful....
I'd feel better about it but since there are many others jumping on the TU bandwagon(half-hearted Okie St fans stung by the Houston debacle) the Sooners just may be aware that Tulsa has a good team....
I'd hate to use the word "if" Tulsa can believe because just like Linus in the pumpkin patch, the great pumpkin might not believe he is sincere enough & not show up....
This game is about nothing, all it's about is winning Saturday, those guys on the other team are no different than you, 11 0n 11, beat the man in front of you & the rest will take care of itself....Now let's go knock somebody on their B-U-T-T !!!!

I agree that OU has better players than TU and I agree that for TU to win, they have to play very well. But that is the case when you go on the road at OU.
TU has enough weapons to beat OU...is it likely...well, let's put it this way, it's just as likely as it was for BYU to beat OU or as likely as it will be for OSU to beat OU.
Are the odds against TU...of course...but TU has just as good a chance to win in Norman as any team outside of the top ten would.

I'm a Tu fan and I find Klein to be about as unbiased a writer as you will find. If he has any bias, it may actually be in TU's favor. Klein was right on. TU has played two really bad teams and did not run the ball or protect their QB very well. The O-line will have to be much better to have any shot at the Sooners. I will say however, OU will likely have as much of a hard time protecting their QB as they did against BYU. While BYU may have a better Defense overall, TU is faster, more athletic and play a more attacking brand of ball. 10 sacks in two games is impressive no matter who you play.
I'll be at the game routing TU on and I hope for a great game.

I thought Tulsa was Idaho St.? The task just isn't as daunting as portrayed. But I'd much rather have the media portraying this game as an impossible win for Tulsa, then having the media tell Oklahoma "you can lose on Saturday."

This OU team is ripe for picking. Attack the secondary with roll out passes to defeat the D-line strength advantage and TU can light up OU. Every Goliath can go down and go down hard.
