OU, Texas may both be stabilizing

OKLAHOMA AND Texas are not the teams we expected back in August.

The Sooners come in twice beaten and ranked 20th. The Longhorns are ranked third but have struggled against a lightweight schedule.

Injuries have robbed OU of many of its playmakers. Texas has been limited by injuries to its running backs.

Still, things seem to be stabilizing for both teams as the game looms on Saturday.

Especially huge is the return of OU quarterback Sam Bradford. The Heisman winner played his first full game in nearly nine months in last week's rout of Baylor.

"If I had not been told that Sam was hurt, I couldn't have seen any difference on Saturday," said Texas coach Mack Brown.

Bradford threw for nearly 400 yards. He threw 49 passes in the game and then said he felt fine after the game. It was just the kind of return Oklahoma needed.

It has been a season of adjustments, trying to mix and match players on an offense wrecked by injuries.

"We've had a lot of adjustments to do on offense," said OU coach Bob Stoops. "That's where most of the injuries have been. It has made it more challenging. Other guys have had to step up. It has been a little inconsistent."

But, it is better with Bradford back.

"He had an excellent day," said Stoops.

"There will be more polish with him out there. The more they (our young guys) are out there the more sure of themselves they will be. They just need to compete in the moment and relax in it."

McCoy has been good for the Longhorns and comes in pretty much on target for another great season. As many good players as Texas has, Stoops knows McCoy is the guy that makes them go.

"He's every positive adjective you can think of," said Stoops.

McCoy was effective running the ball against OU in last year's victory.

"He is so good when he pulls the ball down and works away from pressure like he did a year ago," said Stoops.

Brown knows this is a game between teams but almost all of the focus will be on Bradford and McCoy.

Bradford won the Heisman Trophy last year and McCoy was second. Bradford's team got to play in the national championship even though OU lost to Texas.

But, Bradford has missed most of the season. He was injured in the opening half of the opening game.

"I thought Sam looked just like he did last year when he threw five TDs against us," said Brown.

McCoy has also had an unexpected season. The Longhorns have not been overpowering and have struggled at times.

The offense has not been nearly as good as it was last year.

Still, the Longhorns have lots of talent.

In last week's game against Colorado, the Longhorns showed their versatility. They got a long touchdown pass just before halftime. In the second half they broke the game open with special teams.

Texas turned around the game with a blocked punt return for a TD, a punt return for TD and an interception return for TD.

"Our special teams took over the game," said Brown.

That's an area of the game that has impressed Stoops.

"Like always, they have a very talented and experienced players," said Stoops. "They got 21 points the other night without their offense even touching the ball."
