OU, OSU at the crossroads

OKLAHOMA AND Oklahoma State have struggled through similar challenges but have now reached the crossroads of the season.

For the 25th-ranked Sooners, it is about survival.

For the 14th-ranked Cowboys, it is about persistence.

Here's the cold, hard reality for OU. For all of the talk about the defense and close games, Oklahoma is still 3-3 and probably looking at the remainder of the season without its two best players.

"We were a couple of plays on either side of the ball from changing it," said OU coach Bob Stoops.

The Sooners have lost four straight games away from Norman, dating back to last season's BCS championship game, and still have road games ahead at Kansas, Nebraska and Texas Tech. The three OU victories were all home games against outmanned opponents — Idaho State, Tulsa and Baylor.

"It's been a different year," said Stoops. "There's no denying we've had a lot to overcome."

The Cowboys also know what life is like without their two best players. OSU has been able to win a couple of league games by playing a little defense and getting just enough offense. Replacing Dez Bryant and Kendall Hunter is impossible, but State has been doing the best it can.

Those missing players have created "a chance for another player to step up," said OSU coach Mike Gundy on a Sunday teleconference.

For O-State, it is all about getting those players back and improving a little on defense. If so, a big run is still not out of the question if the Cowboys can win at Baylor this week, no given in a league with wild swings between home and road performances.

"For us to improve in this league, our defensive play is very important," said Gundy.

In other words, the next few weeks are critical.

It's time to plan for life without Sam Bradford at OU. That means continue to play terrific defense and give yourself a chance to win the game by generating a little offense.

"It doesn't matter," said Stoops. "We have a season to play."

In the next three weeks, that includes trips to Kansas and Nebraska. Neither of those teams would appear to be terrific, but nothing comes easy on the road.

"We're not that far off," said Stoops.

That's true. Oklahoma just needs to generate more offense to support what has been a very good defense.

Just a few weeks ago, there were more than a few local media experts that were saying OSU would not win a game in October. It has now won twice with a trip this week to Baylor followed by a Halloween date with Texas.

The season is still in front of Oklahoma State. The Cowboys do not have to rely on any other team. They control their own fate, rather amazing considering the difficult hand they have been dealt with the losses of Bryant and Hunter.

But, OSU has something most teams would love. The Cowboys have Zac Robinson, a senior quarterback who knows how to make plays and win games. That can go a long way in a league with so much parity.

State still has troubles on defense, but there is nothing wrong with shutting out Missouri in the second half of a comfortable victory. The Tigers got just 80 yards in the second half, very similar to the good second half the Cowboys played in the victory over Georgia.

"They were both very good halves for us," said Gundy.

If OSU can play that type of defense, generate some offense with its young playmakers, then getting to the Texas game for a Big 12 South Division showdown is not out of the question.

Right now, the Longhorns are setting the pace and don't expect any letdown. Texas learned a tough lesson last year.

"We were sitting here in this same position last year (after beating OU) and after we lost to Texas Tech, we let it go back into a system and the system kept us out," said Texas coach Mack Brown. "Now, next week's game becomes bigger than this one and it'll progress like that for the rest of the year."

The Longhorns go to Missouri this week and could inch ever closer to eliminating any doubt who is on top of the Big 12.

Hahaha, I love the subtle art of sarcasm. I'm proud of my Pokes, especially Zac, for stepping up and continuing to succeed as our two best playmakers continue to sit on the bench. Hopefully we'll have them both back by Texas. Go Pokes!!!

I believe that's "paunch" Stoops is getting as he gets older.

A pooch is a dog.

Maybe Stoops is getting a pomeranian or chihuahua.

I can feel for OU - losing your 2 best players can make a huge difference. Michigan was without Henne and Hart for most of the 2006 season. When they got healthy - we saw the season we could have had.

GoBlueGal,

Exactly....just imagine where OSU would be had they lost their two best players.... oh wait...

No, I really can't feel for OU.... injuries are part of the game... what defines a team is their ability to rise above adversity and win when they need to.

Maarek, just imagine where OSU would be if they had played the schedule OU's played without their best two players.

If OU scheduled sh*t like Grambling and Rice, we'd be talking about a 5-1, top ten team.

No excuses GoBlueGal. It's not like Landry just walked into the locker room yesterday. He's had enough time to be better than he was Sat. and we should have more receivers ready to step up and make some plays. The o-line has hurt us but not as much as breakdowns in the secondary and poor special teams play as well as the poor play calling at Miami. Even without Sam and Gresh this team should be 6-0 or at worst 5-1. If we limit the mistakes and get consistently sound play in all areas we should be able to run the table and win whatever bowl game we get. If, if, if, right.

Haha, once again, Unbelievable wins the "Moronic Post" award. Instead of scheduling Grambling and Rice, OU went and scheduled real monsters like Idaho State and Tulsa.

I'm not dogging OU for doing it...every team needs warm up games but once again, Unbelievable's hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Right, I forgot OU had such a tough non-conference schedule with Idaho State and Tulsa. Bwaaaa-hahahahahaha!

Steff - Surely you don't think that a kid who had no starts and very little play time can step in and replace an experienced Heisman winning quarterback without any hitches?

GoBlueGal, OU is not losing because of Landry Jones - that is a RIDICULOUS statement! If you've watched the same games I've watched then the reason they've lost is their problems on the Oline, inability to run the ball and lack of discipline (penalties, turnovers, etc.) While OU has certainly caught some bad breaks, OSU has too, but that's why preseason is meaningless. To compare the two teams right now means nothing. But to blame losses on Bradford's injury is crazy - L. Jones is a great young player.

Very nice article Klein. The comparison of how each team has dealt with the loss of its two best players is quality material.

I agree Cowboys - it is just not losing Sam and Greshmam that accounts for OU's losses, just trying to show a little sympathy from someone who roots for a team that has been there. OU needs a quality win.
And I don't always see the OU games, we are usually tuned into the Big 10 channel. This past Saturday there was a lot of channel changing going Michigan / OU-Texas and USC-Notre Dame / Florida-Arkansas.

I agree with you ousoonerfan.. I am a poke fan, but I know better than to brag or even consider the notion that OSU is any better than any other team in the Big 12. We have a lot of games left to play against great teams, including OU.

I hope when Dez comes back he's a team player and Mike Gundy doesn't throw the ball to him all the time. If Dez is on the sideline whining he just can stop it. I'm sorry to say this but the best thing that could have happened to OSU was when Dez was ruled ineligible. Now we have many players that allow the play calling much different and keeps the other team guessing.

We lost to BYU, Miami and Texas (all on the road). No excuses, but we lost by only 5 points. Let's see how OSU does when they play Texas, Tech, and OU. We are going in opposite directions right now, but the season is ony half over. OU needs to get better, but who has OSU beat? Georgia...mid level SEC team at best. Texas A&M...5th best team in BIG 12 south. I will wait to see how OSU does when they play a real team. We have a long way to go to, but our season won't be judged on whether we have a better record than OSU. OU judges itself on what it expects of itself and not how our little step brother OSU does. When OSU actually wins something (Big 12 south, Big 12 championship, etc.) then I will give them thier due credit. Until then, OSU fans will just have to be jealous and hope that they can somehow stay ahead of OU in the polls. Maybe you can start by actually filling up that pretty new stadium...

1st, thanks for the reference to BAHS. It is much better then being beaten by Union or Jenks. However, if we are no better than BAHS, when we beat you, would that make your team equal to Stillwater HS?

GoBlueGal, he was one of the best QB's in the country coming out of high school and has been there learning and running the system for a year and a half. He had 3 1/2 games under his belt going into the Texas game. I'm not saying he should play as well as Sam but he should be better than he was in the 4th qtr. Sat.
