Cowboys hurt themselves in blowout loss to Horns
Texas head coach Mack Brown has a laugh with quarterback Colt McCoy in the closing minutes of Saturday's win over OSU. STEPHEN HOLMAN/Tulsa World

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State needed a perfect game against Texas.
The Cowboys, all of them from Zac Robinson to the receivers and defense, were far from perfect.
"I hate it that we didn't give Texas our best effort," said OSU coach Mike Gundy.
O-State was able to run the ball on the Longhorns, something the experts said couldn't be done, but Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was in Heisman overdrive in a 41-14 victory Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium.
McCoy has been at his best the past two weeks. He was fabulous against the Cowboys, taking advantage of every OSU mistake.
McCoy was the difference in a game that turned on his big plays. How's this for perfection? He missed just five of his 21 passes for 171 yards and a TD. He also ran for a team-high 34 yards. In the first three quarters, when this game was decided, he hit 16-of-19 passes.
"He's a good player," said Gundy. "It is difficult to defend guys who can do both."
As a result, McCoy's Heisman hopes have been revived and the Longhorns are right on target for an appearance in the national championship game.
A year after a last-second loss at Texas Tech cost the 'Horns a shot at the national title, there was no repeat disaster on the road.
Texas is clearly on a mission to make right what it considers a wrong from a year ago.
"They are arguably as good as anyone in the country," said Gundy.
OSU, playing without the weapons it hoped would carry it to a historic season, was no match for a Texas team playing its best.
"We made mistakes against a good football team and put ourselves in a difficult situation," said Gundy.
Texas returned two interceptions for touchdowns, the clincher in what turned out to be a runaway victory for the Longhorns. Robinson was intercepted four times.
"He made a few mistakes," said Gundy.
Oklahoma State did much of what it had to do to be in the game with the Longhorns for about a half. It ran for 134 yards, including 89 in the first half. Texas had given up just 41 rushing yards per game through seven previous victories.
But, OSU failed to cash in opportunities. It dropped passes. It made costly mistakes, such as an interception deep in Texas territory that was returned for a touchdown and giving up a TD just before the half.
"Our room for error against a good team like this is very, very thin," said Gundy.
As a result, the Cowboys did not give themselves a chance to beat the Longhorns on Halloween night before a sellout and record home crowd of 58,516.
Oklahoma State fans were far better prepared than the players. And, O-State got the kind of game it would have wanted for about a half.
Robinson was especially sharp early in the game, but receivers repeatedly dropped passes and fumbled away another great opportunity.
Any questions about the loss of Dez Bryant, and what his impact could have been in this game, were answered pretty early. On this night, Deion Sanders was Texas' best friend.
Without Bryant, OSU's receivers simply were not a big threat to Texas' secondary, perhaps the best in the country.
In the first half, OSU receivers were sloppy with the ball and cost the Cowboys a chance to not only be in the game but to perhaps be in the lead.
Instead, the Longhorns pulled away to the comfortable 24-7 lead.
It got much worse early in the second half, when the Longhorns ended any mystery to this game. After opening with a long drive for a field goal, Earl Thomas picked off a poorly thrown Robinson pass and returned it 31 yards for a TD.
Any hope for an OSU rally was now gone as Texas led 34-7.
In the first half, OSU had four drives into Texas territory and got one touchdown, a 1-yard dive just two minutes before the half.
Long before OSU got on the board, it had stumbled around and wasted three great chances. A 13-play drive to open the game was thrown away when Dan Bailey couldn't hit a 45-yard field goal.
A fumbled punt went for nothing when OSU dropped a TD pass.
Then, OSU went on an 11-play drive in the second quarter that ended when Curtis Brown returned an interception 77 yards for a TD. Instead of being up a touchdown or two, OSU found itself in a 17-0 hole.
Against one of the best defenses in the country, that was far too big of a hole.
The dismal opening half for OSU came just before halftime with McCoy hitting an 11-yard TD pass.
The Longhorns had a commanding lead. The game was over. OSU never gave itself a chance.

Yes, Texas was obviously the better team, but it sure didn't help having every poor referee call go Texas' way.
This season seems to be the poorest overall referee performance ever. Not just Big 12 games, but SEC and elsewhere. It seems teams like Florida and Texas are being "protected" and getting all of the calls that influence the flow and outcome of the game.
I'm sick of this pansie "helmet-to-helmet" rule that the referees are abusing. It's as if any back is even close to hitting with any authority, the refs are going to call it. It was particularly abused against OSU's Antoine last night, giving Texas a first down and the opportunity to score.
That call should only be used in an obvious situation, which most calls aren't.
College officiating seems to be "influenced" this year.
I hate it when officials become such a large part of the game giving the favorites the edge.
Still, Texas didn't need the officiating to make a game of it. But they got it, taking much needed momentum away from the Cowboys.
Sucks to lose, but it sucks more when the officials are so poor, too.

The overall play of Zac Robinson has to questioned. His play in big games had been poor. I don't think this team should be ranked in the top 20. When was the last time they won a game when they were not favored. I could tell you tell many game they lost when they were the better team. They are a notch below the better teams in the country.

Very well written article. I do think the defense played reasonably well. But, the receivers dropped too many passes, Bailey kicked poorly on his field-goal chance and Robinson kept trying to force balls to receivers who couldn't make those kind of plays. If you want practice forcing throws, do it in a different game ... Would have been better to put the defense back out there, given the competition, the defense looked like a bright spot to me, even if they could've played better, don't know why anybody would call it bad. They got pressure and they got sacks

2 losses at home. That's not "big time."

Those mean old refs took your mo, huh Dan? Looked like your receivers and their hands of stone took it, to me. That or Robinson being confused about which team to throw it to. You really look dumb bringing up the officiating after a beat-down like that.

Hey Shadow, compare the loss columns and rankings of your team and OSU. Steff, the Diver's first comment was "Texas was the better team". No blame on the officiating but, as I agree, it's getting out of hand and just adds insult to injury. By the way... if our team is such a "joke" why do you lOUsers spend time milling around the OSU boards. Really, you all need to get a life!

We needed a perfect game. We didn't get it. That's the way it goes.
I keep remembering a comment that Dez said early in the year. He wanted to show everyone that he was the best receiver in college football. Thanks for thinking of yourself Dez. We could have used you on Saturday.
Shadow, the nose Pickens thing is getting old. I know you just heard it because you couldn't think of anything clever so listen to some of your other high IQ buddies and get some new material. Have you noticed that nobody is trashing your coach, AD, or even your team. Just you and your fickle ship-jumping fans..................

Okay so the game didn't go as we planned. I did enjoy meeting some of the Texas fans. For the most part they were nice and not comparable to OU fans who are rude and make idiots of themselves. My favorite highlight (not game related) had to be a large number of Texas fans dressed up as OU fans for Halloween. On guy had a mullet, a big beer gut hanging from underneath his OU shirt with a little food smeared on it. Then he had Billy Bob teeth. He said his name was Billy Bob Stoops the brother of Bob Stoops. Again...highlight of my night because it definately wasn't the game itself.

Sorry statepride, saying Texas was better and then complaining about the refs doesn't take away from the "whining about things that were not the problem" issue. Nice try though. And leslipe, I'll bet that WAS pretty funny. Mix in a dictionary though.
