Big 12: Three storylines

OSU's Zac Robinson makes positive yards against ISU at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa, Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

1. What about Zac?: Take Jordan Shipley away from Colt McCoy. How about Nebraska without those two defensive tackles? No one is talking about Zac Robinson but has any player in the Big 12, including McCoy, been more important to his team? Robinson lost the two best players around him, the nation's best wide receiver and one of the top running backs. When Dez Bryant and Kendall Hunter were lost, many believed OSU would be hard-pressed to reach a bowl. Instead, they have been a solid second in the South, primarily because of Robinson and an improved defense.

2. The wild, wild North: Kansas State looks to be in good shape at the top of the Big 12 North. However, considering the wacky season in the North, nothing should be ruled out. It appears K-State's showdown with Nebraska will determine the North title. However, every team in the North is capable of pulling off a stunner one way or another. Take Mizzou: The Tigers won at Colorado and then went home to lose to Baylor. That's not unusual in the North these days. Check Nebraska's last three home games — losses to Texas Tech and Iowa State and then a win over OU.

3. Horns stay on Pasadena Highway: Texas remains an overwhelming favorite to reach the national championship game in Pasadena. This week, the road goes through Baylor, and the Bears do not have the talent to play with the Horns. In addition, Kansas appears to be going the wrong direction and the Jayhawks go to Austin the following week. An improving Texas A&M could be somewhat of a threat in the rivalry game. However,
the Longhorns don't show any signs of slowing up. Colt McCoy's Heisman Trophy campaign seems to be kicking into high gear.
