Phillips' Cowboys are gutless bunch
COMMENTARY

PHILADELPHIA — Wade Phillips presides over the most gutless team in franchise history.

That's his legacy.

Forever.

And it should be after Philadelphia stomped the Cowboys, 44-6, in a win-and-you're-in-the-playoffs game Sunday.

But he's keeping his job — even after the worst loss of the Jerry Jones era. Seriously.

Jerry wants to keep the coaching staff intact because he said the continuity provides Dallas with its best chance to win. Besides, he doesn't want to make the same mistake he did nearly a decade ago, when he fired Chan Gailey after only two seasons.

Can you say poppycock?

It seems to me Jerry needs a psych evaluation. Either he has lost his mind or he thinks the fans in Dallas are so dumb they will fill his new billion-dollar stadium regardless of the product on the field or the man running the team.

That's the only conclusion you can draw, because if Phillips keeps his job after this season, Jerry should never fire him. Phillips will never do a worse job than he did this season.

Ever.

Then again, maybe Jerry's encouraged because the Cowboys won the fourth quarter — 3-0 on a 42-yard field goal by Nick Folk — and we all know the importance Phillips places on finishing strong.

"You take everybody, starting here, to the woodshed," Jerry said. "Everybody goes to the woodshed. Everyone."

We'll see.

But it's hard to talk tough about taking folks to the woodshed, when Phillips, who managed a 13-3 team with Super Bowl expectations so poorly that it didn't even make the playoffs, remains the coach.

This group of arrogant faux stars played with a sense of entitlement, in part, because Phillips provided a plethora of ready-made excuses for their flaws, when he should've been challenging his underachieving players to perform better.

The big-time players who were supposed to make big plays in big games never showed up on Sunday.

You can start with Tony Romo, who threw an interception and fumbled twice, leading to 17 points. Philadelphia outscored the Cowboys, 41-0, during the second and third quarters.

After the second fumble, Romo lay face-first on the turf, his hands on his helmet in despair. Until he decides protecting the ball is a high priority, Romo will never have end-of-the-season success.

Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett's offense was abject, as it has been much of this month against quality defenses. Romo said the Eagles thwarted the Cowboys' pass-blocking schemes, his way of saying either Garrett or offensive line coach Hudson Houck did a poor job.

Now these Cowboys, who entered December 8-4 and in control of their playoff destiny, must answer another year of questions about their propensity for choking after going 1-3 in the season's final month.

Then they can answer questions about their embarrassing streak of 12 consecutive seasons without a playoff win, the longest in franchise history.

"This is a tough way to end the season, the last two games, is really a shameful way to go out," T.O. said.

What did you expect from this gutless group?

I've been a Cowboys fan since I learned what football was, and Staubach was the QB. I've said time and time again, sports teams are like your children; they will disappoint you, let you down, make you angry but you'll always love them.
I've been a Tony Romo hater since he first took a snap. I knew he didn't have what it took to be a Cowboy, just didn't have it. Pre-season writers, "fish wraps", called Romo a possible MVP and he's done nothing but live up to my expectations. Tony Romo.... Didn't he have a rib joint?
After almost 40 years I'm about to give up. It breaks my heart. But sometimes you have to abandon ship before it drags you to the bottom. No, I'll always love the Cowboys but I don't have to like watching them. What do you think Troy was thinking watching that debacle? I bet he wanted a plate of ribs with extra sauce.

One other thing, the ONLY thing that would keep me from crying myself to sleep if Sam Bradford goes pro is if he goes to Dallas and Tony goes off with Jessica never to be heard from again; unless they do an MTV reality show. But then again, it's MTV... who's watching?

If they'd take away the guaranteed millions and put everything on performance like the rest of us have, maybe we'd see a whole different attitude from the teams. "Entitlement" is right on. . .

Entitlement? Entitled to what? What did he ever do besides fumble a snap in the play offs? never won a post season game, was less than mediocre on his best day this year. What's Romo entitled to, a seat at the Grammys when Jess is a presenter? I earn every penny I make and I have to work for it. You're right, a base salary with incentive bonuses, everyone makes the same money and if you shine you earn

And Wade should go by his daddy's name because that's what he is

I liked what Jimmy Johnson said on TV. "The Cowboys are not a team, they are more like a bunch of toys"

Tired of your toys yet Jerry Jones?

It seems like the team simply gave up after Romo was out for that 4 game stretch with his broken finger. Not that they were "on a tear" before the injury, but anything would have been better than playing Brad Johnson.

I like Romo, but he's very frustrating. He's just a player at the QB position, but Dallas needs a leader. There offense has been playing very uninspired. They require a leader to get them through the rough patches of the season. All they had was a bunch of TO BS drama.

The problem is not really Wade Phillips, IMHO. As long as Jerry Jones is GM and President, the Cowboys will lose big games.

It takes a TEAM to win big games, and you'll never build a team by hiring thugs (even talented thugs) like Pacman Jones and Terrell Owens. Individual athletes do not make a team. Jones does not understand that, and maybe never will.

I`m not going to rip into the cowboys, they are bad because no passion for the team .... they may have passion for the game but not team... It is sad when I have to agree with T.O. Romo does look for WITTEN alot , almost like that is the only guy he sees.. Still you have to say they have talent , its just not talent that can be blended together as a team .. Fox hole guys ,men you can count on instead of pouting... Wade has never been a coach that sets down the law.. They may have not liked Parcells but he cleaned them up and put a group out there that wanted to win and play together.. Hell just look at what the Dolphins are doing.. Its all about chemistry, people pulling together on the same rope the same way

Things won't change until Jerry Jones realizes that he needs a Coach to be in charge of the team instead of a Puppet wearing a headset on the sidelines.Dallas hasn't had a real coach since Jimmy Johnson, with all due respect to Switzer he was a fabulous college coach but he was only brought in to piss off Johnson, he did exactly what Gruden did at Tampa take over the controls of the best team in the NFL at the time, it just took him 2yrs to win the title instead of 1.

Yes, Brad Johnson has a Super Bowl ring...from about five years ago when he was a starter. Let's look at the numbers.

In the 4 game span Johnson threw 5 INT's, got sacked 8 times, had only 427 yds, and 2 TD's.
Those aren't exactly the same numbers he was racking up when he won his ring. I'm not blaming him though. It was a tough situation to step into.
He had to make do with what he had and the D wasn't giving him much help. It would have been better if the 'boys had invested in a younger/better back up.
The whole team is to blame on this, and Jerry Jones is the rotten cherry at the top.

Cowboy fan since birth.....has been extremely difficult watching them......thugs is too nice of a word to use....the down hill started way back when.....everyone knows....that when Jerry treated Coach Laundry the way he did....that the organization was head down.....being from Texas how can we have an owner from Arkansas and a coach from Oklahoma.....that ain't right.....yes, I know we won a super bowl...but Switzer won it on someone's coattail........I say bring Jimmy Johnson back......it will take a boot camp atmosphere to turn this bunch of whatever's around.....ship the thugs out.....Romo is just an average qb....nothing more, nothing less......he must be surrounded by quality people....something the cowboys are lacking...starts at the top Jerry...could continue but will not....this is just a portion of my humble opinion.....
