League to appeal player suspensions: The NFL filed notice Tuesday that it plans to appeal a federal judge's ruling in the case of two Minnesota players facing suspensions over positive drug tests.

U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson last week threw out most of the claims by Vikings defensive tackles Kevin Williams, a former Oklahoma State standout, and Pat Williams. He also dismissed a lawsuit brought by the NFL players' union on behalf of the Williamses and three New Orleans players also facing suspension. But Magnuson sent the Williamses' two remaining claims to state court.

In Tuesday's filing, the NFL said it ask the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals to review whether Magnuson misapplied federal law when he didn't dismiss those two claims outright.

The NFL Players Association and the Williamses say NFL officials knew a weight-loss supplement called StarCaps contained the banned diuretic bumetanide back in 2006, even though it wasn't listed on the label, and that the league should have notified players and federal regulators. The NFL bans bumetanide because it can be used as a masking agent for steroids.

The players were not accused of taking steroids. They are seeking to have their four-game suspensions overturned, as well as monetary damages. An injunction allowing the Williamses to continue playing is still in place.

Cowboys to part ways with Ellis: Dallas has decided to end its ties to outside linebacker Greg Ellis.

Ellis and owner and general manager Jerry Jones met Tuesday morning. While a definitive time frame has not been set, Jones said Ellis would play elsewhere in 2009.

Ellis was told to stay home from organized team activities as the club considered options. If Ellis is cut, the move frees up $4.15 million against this year's salary cap, however, the team remains on the hook for a $1.5 million guarantee that was put in Ellis' contract in 2007. If Ellis signs with another team, the Cowboys would have to make up the difference if he does not earn $1.5 million from his new employer.

Also Tuesday, Dallas released released cornerback Tra Battle and defensive tackle Casey Tyler.

Ex-Lawton High Minter decides not to run for Congress: Former Carolina Panthers safety Mike Minter said he has decided against seeking the Republican nomination for the 8th District seat in 2010.

Republicans hosted Minter in Washington earlier this month in hopes the popular ex-Panther would decide to challenge Democrat Larry Kissell, who beat 10-year Republican incumbent Robin Hayes in November. Minter said he decided the job would put too much of a strain on his family.

Brady hits the practice field: Tom Brady practiced with the New England Patriots for the first time since suffering a season-ending knee injury in last year's opening game. Brady and nearly the entire team participated in the first of four days of this week's organized team activities, Patriots spokesman Stacey James said.
