Derailed recovery
This time, Elliott says, he hopes to stay on track. Some NFL teams hope the same.
Former OSU and current Oklahoma Thunder player Prentiss Elliott has scored 19 touchdowns and accounted for 1,483 all-purpose yards so far with the Oklahoma Thunder. MICHAEL WYKE / Tulsa World

PRENTISS ELLIOTT is getting another chance to revive his football career — 14 months since he was arrested and fumbled an opportunity with the Tulsa Talons indoor team.
The former Tulsa high school standout is putting up staggering numbers for the Oklahoma Thunder minor league team.
Elliott has scored 19 touchdowns and accounted for 1,483 all-purpose yards (combined rushing, receiving and return yards). He averages 35.3 yards every time he touches the ball for the undefeated Thunder.
NFL representatives have been a fixture at Thunder games, and Thunder head coach Bruce Madden says it seems a matter of time before Elliott is offered some kind of pro contract.
"Frankly, I can't believe he's been here as long as he has," Madden said.
Not bad for a guy who hadn't played organized football since his promising freshman year at Oklahoma State in 2004. Elliott was dismissed for unspecified violations of team policies by new Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy in early 2005.
Pro scouts are amazed that Elliott, 24, seems to have lost none of his athletic ability.
"They're amazed that he can still run the (40-yard) dash like he could in college," said Elwood Ott, a former Tulsan working to keep Elliott's name in circulation, by phone from his home in Lawrence, Kan.
Elliott couldn't be more excited about how things are going.
"I feel like a 5-year-old at Chuck E. Cheese's. Everything's going great," he said.
No one has doubted Elliott's
athletic ability, not since he rushed for 2,515 yards and scored 29 touchdowns as a senior at Tulsa High School for Science and Technology — now McLain High School — in 2003.
But his frequent run-ins with the law have sabotaged his career.
In April 2008, while trying to earn playing time with the Talons arena football team, he was arrested in a shooting incident and later pleaded no contest to a felony charge of using a vehicle in the discharge of a firearm.
Elliott was arrested April 25, 2008, after a three-vehicle crash in the 2500 block of North Boston Avenue. The mother of Elliott's girlfriend had called twice that evening, once to report that Elliott had threatened to shoot her daughter and again to report that he "just drove through here shooting."
No one was struck by gunfire, prosecutors said.
Elliott received a three-year suspended sentence and three years of probation. He also pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors making a threatening phone call and failure to stop at a stop sign.
In 2006, Elliott was found guilty of a misdemeanor assault and battery charge but received no jail time for his role in a physical confrontation with an off-duty police officer in 2003, when he was in high school, according to a Tulsa World report at the time.
In 2007, he was sentenced to 15 days in jail after pleading no contest to transporting a loaded firearm.
Elliott seems sincere about wanting to create a better future for himself.
"I'm not proud of the things that have happened in the past, but God has helped me get through them," Elliott said. "Sometimes, you have to cut yourself off from certain people, if you want to be rehabilitated, and surround yourself with people of character. That's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to take advantage of the chance I've been given."
Madden was at first skeptical about Elliott's wanting to join the Thunder.
"But I got him to talk to me honestly, and I felt good about the things I heard coming out of his mouth. I think I got a good feel for his personality and his commitment," Madden said.
Madden said Elliott has been "a model citizen" since joining the team, "a breath of fresh air. He never misses a practice, and he's never been late for anything. He's no disciplinary problem at all."
Said Ott: "I know a lot of people have negative things to say about Prentiss, but they really don't know him. If they spent time talking to him, they'd realize he's a bright young man. He's made some mistakes, that's well noted. But there's just something about him. He's actually good people."
The St. Louis Rams apparently think he's a good prospect. Madden said the Rams had scouted all but the Thunder's most recent game and worked out Elliott before one game. They've also asked for videotape after every game.
The New England Patriots also scouted a game and asked for videotape, as did the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans.
Ott said the teams involved "are trying to make sure they've got all their bases covered. They like the stats he's putting up, but they're just a little nervous about the layoff between him playing for Oklahoma State and playing now with the Thunder."
In his only collegiate season, Elliott caught 17 passes for 295 yards and averaged 9.9 yards on 16 punt returns (with a 74-yarder against Baylor) and 28.0 yards on eight kickoff returns.
Getting back into shape hasn't been a problem, because Elliott has seldom been out of shape.
"I never stopped working out. I run and lift every day, and I've got my little brother to work out with. I've been running around with him, catching some balls," Elliott said.
His brother, former McLain quarterback Shawn Jackson, has signed to play at the University of Tulsa.

Oklahoma Thunder to host Mexican team on Friday
Barring other developments, Elliott will be in action again at 6:30 p.m. Friday when the Thunder hosts Tecnológico de Monterrey Rams of Mexico City in the 2009 North American Bowl, a charity game at Exchange Bank Stadium in Skiatook. Admission is $5 and a can of food, which will benefit the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. A portion of proceeds will go to the Shriners.

Just what the NFL needs to add to its stellar reputation for upstanding citizens. Elliott found trouble when he didn't have anything, wonder how much he can find with a little money in his pocket?

I hope in ten or twenty years hes not sitting around broke in North Tulsa talkin bout what might have been and living with a mountain of regrets. He mentioned the word God in his comment. God holds us to responsibility, and may he find it. This is so far a broke version of the Pac man Jones story. Please Prentice, Dont end up in a bad way. Make it a good way. Well, I hope that he can make it. If he does turn himself around and becomes a positive role model, he could be such an influence on other kids coming up. I think that when you screw up as many chances as he has, once you do decide to change, it's even harder to do because everyone expects to see you fail. I am not familiar with the Thunder football team so I don't know how big of a deal it is but I'm sure it's not the NFL. It appears that he's starting out at the bottom and so far it sounds like he's doing things right and it also sounds like he had to convince a coach to take a chance on him so the opportunity was just not "handed" to him. It appears to me like he is trying so I will not dog him. I wish him the best of luck and hope that it works out. Mr. Elliott, you have seen what those things are that cause you problems, so please do not do them!! It sounds lame I know but that is the key to your continued success!!

Amber, I think their point is that he has not learned from them over and over again, and he does not deserve another chance from your brother or anyone else. Maybe they're right, maybe they're wrong but I'm guessing that your brother is probably giving him a chance because of his potential on the field to help the team and not because he is so deeply concerned about his life getting turned around.
