NFL Notebook: Bills fire head coach Jauron

Dick Jauron was fired by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday, when the coach ran out of time to build a contender or come up with a way to fix an offense that sputtered even with the addition of Terrell Owens.

Bills owner Ralph Wilson announced Jauron's dismissal, saying he made the decision "for the best interest of his team." The move came two days after the Bills (3-6) fell further out of contention following a 41-17 loss at Tennessee.

A replacement coach has yet to be hired as the Bills prepare to play at Jacksonville on Sunday. Jauron's successor is expected to come from the current staff and be hired on an interim basis only. Candidates include assistant head coach Bobby April and defensive coordinator Perry Fewell.

The Bills are averaging just over 15 points from an offense that acquired Owens this offseason but remains unsettled at quarterback. The defense is riddled with injuries, and has allowed an NFL-worst 173 yards rushing a game.

Steelers promote Woods: The Steelers have waived backup linebacker Arnold Harrison, the first player to lose his job after three kickoff return touchdowns were allowed by Pittsburgh's coverage unit in the last four games.

Donovan Woods, an undrafted linebacker from Oklahoma State who played in five games last season, was promoted from the practice squad.

Coach Mike Tomlin says he is analyzing all details of the repeated breakdowns and that more changes on special teams will occur. The only previous season that Pittsburgh allowed three kickoff return touchdowns was 1986.

Bengals rookie Bernard Scott's 96-yard kickoff return score was the only touchdown for either team during Cincinnati's 18-12 victory Sunday.

Larry Johnson agrees to terms with Bengals: Larry Johnson might have his career up-and-running sooner than expected.

The running back who was banished from Kansas City for bad behavior signed on for a backup role with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday, giving the AFC North leaders depth for the rest of this season. He might not be watching for long.

A day after coach Marvin Lewis referred to Johnson as an insurance policy in case of injury, he said it's possible the running back could play in some form Sunday in Oakland if starter Cedric Benson is still limited by a strained hip.

Chiefs' Bowe suspended for drug violation: Dwayne Bowe, in and out of his coach's doghouse all year, is in much deeper trouble now.

Kansas City's third-year wide receiver was suspended without pay for four games Tuesday for violating the NFL's policy against performance-enhancing substances. Neither the Chiefs nor the league would make further comment and Bowe's agent, Todd France, did not return calls seeking comment.

His loss is a blow to the Chiefs (2-7), who have struggled in coach Todd Haley's first year and been particularly weak at wide receiver, signing them off the street throughout the year and then discarding them and trying others.

The only constant at the position has been the talented but exasperating Bowe.
