Tulsa may gain WNBA team
Investors are expected to hold a press conference next week on efforts to bring in a team, source says.

A WNBA franchise might be coming to Tulsa.
A group of investors from Oklahoma City and Tulsa are expected to have a press conference Wednesday announcing an effort to bring a team from the Women's National Basketball Association to Tulsa, according to a source familiar with the situation.
As reported Friday on
tulsaworld.com
, WNBA president Donna Orender will be in Tulsa in conjunction with the announcement that will reveal investors and the remaining issues they face in bringing a team to Tulsa, the source said.
"If the investors choose to bring a franchise to Oklahoma, I think it would be absolutely phenomenal," said ESPN women's basketball analyst Nancy Lieberman. "Oklahoma is passionate about sports. They are avid sports fans. I think it would be a great partnership. If the (Oklahoma City) Thunder are involved, that's pretty good franchise right there.
"If WNBA (president) Donna Orender is coming to Tulsa, she is coming to town because she realizes this is a great opportunity for the city (of Tulsa)."
The BOK Center has been in negotiations with the WNBA, according to multiple sources, but BOK Center general manager John Bolton had no comment when contacted Friday.
According to a source, two of the investors trying to bring a team to Tulsa are Oklahoma City businessmen Bill Cameron and David Box. The duo joined the Tulsa Talons' ownership group before the start of the team's current arenafootball2 season.
Cameron, the president and CEO of American Fidelity Assurance Co., is part of an Oklahoma City-based group that owns the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder. Box is president and CEO of Box Ventures and is majority owner of the Greens Country Club in Oklahoma City.
The WNBA consists of 13 teams that each play a 34-game regular-season schedule from early June to mid-September. Teams play half their games at home.
The only player from Oklahoma currently in the WNBA is former Sooner Courtney Paris, who is a rookie with the Sacramento Monarchs. Her head coach, John Whisenant, is from Gore.
Tulsa is home to a men's professional basketball team — the Tulsa 66ers. The team plays in the NBA Development League and is a minor league affiliate of the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder.
The 66ers ownership group is led by Clay Bennett, who also owns the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 66ers played in the SpiritBank Event center last season but plan to relocate in the Tulsa area this season.
About the WNBA
The WNBA’s inaugural season was 1997, and the league has franchises in Atlanta, Chicago, Connecticut, Detroit, Indiana, New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Minnesota, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio and Seattle.
The Detroit Shock are the defending league champions and have won two of the last three titles. Candace Parker, a former Tennessee All-American, was named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2008.

I went to a WNBA game in a big city back east a few years ago. They basically gave the tickets away for free in order to get people to come to the games.

Look I know, I know. WNBA is not high on our priority list of major league sports, but maybe it should be. Having a pro team in Tulsa could do major things for our city, the exposure alone is enough to say yes. I think it's great for our city. Now about the name... Tulsa Tulip's, Tinkerbell's, Tight.... lets not go there.

I know this is a stretch but go and watch a competitive girls basketball game here in Tulsa some weekend. These girls can move and are mean. I think they are meaner then boys and when you get two teams that are about equal the technicals start flying. It can be fun and I hope it comes here soon!

I think this would be great! My family would support a Tulsa team.
ditto is absolutely right. There is a whoooole buncha great basketball here in Tulsa. My girl's a junior in college now thanks to a basketball scholarship. The boys are all about hot-doggin' and dunking, and that's fun, but the girls really play the game and don't kid yourself, they are aggressive!
There are very few better places to be on a Saturday than in the gym with a bunch of high-energy kids, good kids, doin' the right thing.

Luckily, the team won't need none of you Numb nuts to come. But I and many of my friends would buy season tickets. I've been to tons of WNBA games and it's so much fun. Plus, it's very affordable. You haters and male chauvinists can go on to your knuckle-dragging activities. I'll be at the games!

The city has had it's share of professional teams; The Outlaws of the WFL; The Roughnecks of the NALS; The Twisters of the PRA; and all stayed for a little while - I believe to engage into any interests of bringing a WNBA team to Tulsa the investors who are placing the $ needs to recongize that this product, in much larger cities who have had a WNBA team have folded because of the product (WNBA) is not one that not widley promoted on tv or print and therefore the fans are appathetic to support. I say NO to the WNBA for Tulsa.

I agree with golden driller, heck we have the 66ers and no one supports them as much as they need too. i mean last season they had dj white, kyle weaver, and steven hill from OKC playing in town... I think just adding something else to support without supporting our current teams is a waste of time.

I would only support it if I knew who the players were... I tried watching the sacramento monarchs vs. seattle storm (tee hee, we stole their nba team, tee hee) and was only interested when Courtney Paris was playing.
If they make a good effort to get OU, OSU, TU and ORU alumni to continue their careers in Oklahoma, then this might be worthy something to local fans. After all, attendance in the Big 12 for women's basketball ain't too shabby.

OKC can have all of the basketball stuff - its killing all of their other minor league sports-- and besides no one cares about pro basketball around here. I give the Thunder 2 more years and they'll have over half the seats empty - then they'll want to change the name to "Oklahoma Thunder" and beg Tulsans to come see their crappy team. No thanks.

No disrespect to women but it's just not exciting to watch them play any sport after watching guys play. It's like watching a race with cars going 200 mph and then watching one with them going 100 mph. Also, Tulsa couldn't and wouldn't support it.

The funniest thing about all of you that are saying "no" to this is that you are making assumptions. You don't know the numbers. You don't know if it will be a failure. We all know that it's not like bringing the Lakers to Tulsa. It's too bad that most people can't just look at this and think positively about possibly bettering the great city of Tulsa.

Perhaps WNBA failed in the other cities because they have NBA.
I can't understand why those of you who say you hate it think it should be banned for those of us who like it. So what if they come and fail? Unless the city is expected to lay out big bucks to get them, then how can it hurt you? I guess your comments make Nancy Lieberman look pretty dumb, don't they? I would love to go unless they play in the center downtown and have to charge ridiculous prices for tickets.

A WNBA team might do better in OKC, but I'd welcome it or a USL-1 team here...We need more sports options in the summer than just the Drillers.
Women's pro sports struggle compared to school and international sports not because of quality of play, but rather pride. It's easy to rally behind an amateur team because they're representing your school or nation, and you might know the center/second baseman/midfielder from class or around town. Pro sports, due to their mercenary nature, diminish that attachment.

Oh good grief...geez, we got Britney, Aerosmith, tons of talent coming. How about a team that just plays a couple months during the summer. I think Tulsa could accommodate it and actually enjoy it. And Badgerjohn, I think you're partly right. But you start getting to KNOW your team and get terribly attached. And men with daughters who enjoy basketball will definitely want to go with their kids. It's a family-oriented thing. All you who are so negative about it...whatever. Go home and sit on your Barcalounger. Leave us to the game! Progress and change is ALL good.

Is the WNBA still in businesss? Never see any coverage, locally or nationally. Don't know any of the players. Can't bear to watch it. The WNBA is major league in name only.
It's OK if they want to give it a try in Tulsa, but frankly, the league wouldn't exist if not subsidized by the NBA.

Tiara, I agree that progress is good. This issue here is simply the venue. To have the BOK booked for several dates with little or no attendance is silly. The tours that come thru have very lmited dates. For Tulsa to not get a top 10 show because of a WNBA date would be a real shame. The Fairgrounds or the SpiritBank Center would be much more appropriate venues as they would allow us to have a WNBA franchise and, at the same time, keep the BOK open for the larger attendance events

No matter where you put it, it's still not fun to watch. Have any of you really tried to watch an actual game? If not, paint something and watch it dry and you'll get the idea. Like the guy said, it would not exist if it were not being subsidized by the NBA. No city can make it work based on attendance. That's because it's not enjoyable to watch. Sorry.
