SAND SPRINGS — Junior quarterback Eric Bennett rushed for 206 yards and four touchdowns to lead top-ranked Booker T. Washington past No. 2 Midwest City Carl Albert 28-17 in the Class 5A state championship game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The Hornets (13-1), who were tied at 7-7 at halftime, won their first state football title since 1984. Carl Albert finished 12-2 with both its losses coming against the Hornets.
Bennett scored the go-ahead TD on a 3-yard run with 4:06 left in the third quarter.
After Carl Albert’s Austin Manger kicked a 26-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, Bennett countered with a 47-yard TD run with 8:40 left to stretch the Hornets’ lead to 21-10. Bennett's next TD from the 2 made it 28-10.
Carl Albert opened the scoring with David Oku’s 10-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Oku carried 10 times for 88 yards on the 98-yard drive.
The Hornets tied the game on Eric Bennett’s 1-yard TD run on the first play of the second quarter. They had a chance to take lead, but missed a 45-yard field goal attempt against the wind on the half’s final play.
Oku had 132 yards on 28 carries.

I am so happy for Booker T players and coaches. The last time Booker T. took State I was 15 years old. My son now plays for Booker T. and he is now 15 years old! I am truly proud of my alma mater!
