Tulsa gets closer to gaining WNBA team
Investors report that the group has reached 75 percent of its goal.

Tulsa is getting closer to securing a WNBA franchise, Oklahoma City businessmen Bill Cameron and David Box announced Wednesday at the Tulsa Press Club's Page One Luncheon.

The duo have spearheaded a group of investors that is seeking to become the newest professional women's basketball franchise.

Cameron said the group is 75 percent toward its goal.

"We still have a lot of work to do," he said. "We've come a long way. We've made tremendous progress. The biggest obstacle is familiarizing people with the product. There's a great basis for girls basketball at the high school level in the Tulsa metro area. But at the pro level, people aren't familiar with the product.

"People who have seen the excitement level with Sherri Coale's team at Oklahoma can see the potential, but again it's familiarizing them with the product and the entertainment value."

The Tulsa World learned Wednesday that a $5 million investment is needed to begin the process, and reportedly the group is close to that financial goal.

But there are other key components to be met, such as securing the BOK Center for 17 home dates and obtaining corporate sponsorships.

Negotiations between the investment group and the WNBA are proceeding, Cameron said.

"We're still facing a Sept. 1 deadline, but (WNBA president) Donna Orender has agreed to give us a few more weeks," Cameron said. "We're in good shape with our investors. We're looking for corporate sponsorship with suites, loge boxes and club seats in addition to season ticket sales."

Orender made a quick stop in Tulsa on Tuesday, meeting with potential investors and corporate sponsors, Cameron said.

Several fans were in attendance Wednesday and expressed excitement with the project.

"For our city, this is huge," said former Oklahoma State and Booker T. Washington football standout Melvin Gilliam. "We've always been known as a city too small to be big, but too big to be small. This is a huge, huge step for our city, being able to support major league sports. Look at Oklahoma City, everyone said they were too small. What they are doing (with the NBA) is tremendous. I think this is the tip of the iceberg for Tulsa."

Box announced that SpiritBank and owner Kell Kelly had joined Bank of Oklahoma as corporate sponsors.

"If we can sell 5,000-6,000 tickets per game, we can be successful," Box said.

Cameron said that the group hopes to get a quarter of its revenue from corporate sponsorships and about half of its revenue from ticket sales.

Negotiations are continuing with Nolan Richardson as the team's coach.

I've given up hope on this not happening. I wonder what happens to the Talons weekend dates, or, more likely, what happens to the Talons altogether? I don't see them moving back to the Convention Center arena and they can't play pretty much anywhere else...

Ok. The owner himself mentioned Sherri Coale and the excitement she brings at Oklahoma. A Sherri Coal type Coach is needed here to make this effort successful.

Familiarizing people with a product that sucks does not make them want to buy into that product. You can't compare what a local hero like Sherri brings to a College Program to WNBA ball.

True but I have been on a rant that if this happens, our team needs a Sherri Coale type rather than Nolan Richardson.

I agree with Arbythree that we need a modern era type coach.

Sherry Coale makes over $500,000 a year, just about the entire salary of a WNBA team.

The investors in this deal need to poll the general public and find out if anyone is excited about professional women's basketball. Gut feeling tells me that even those of us who love women's college sports still wont go to these games.

OKC didn't have to sell the town on the NBA. Here, they have to sell us that women's bball is a good idea. They won't avg 8k per game like they need to. They'll be lucky for 3K, like the Oilers and Talons. I hope Tulsa proves me and my friends wrong but I don't see it being successful. I know I won't spend my $$$ on it. Also, NO TAXPAYERS MONEY better be used.

Lots of people want the WNBA to come! I am very familiar with "the product" and absolutely love it. If people would give it a chance, it would be fantastic. Unfortunately, most of you all who post on here are just stick-in-the-mud hicks who don't have a progressive or optimistic bone in you. And btw, you has-been (OKC) track star, it DOESN'T suck!! Go Tulsa! Go WNBA!

The problem, Doc S, is that when the "investors" get stuck in a losing situation, they so often turn to the local government to help bail them out with tax-payers' money.

I'm sure glad that never happens at the federal level.

I don't think tulsa will ever support this. If you go to most girls highschool basketball games all you will see there are parents and friends. I don't understand why but this is how it is. I have daughters have seen this first hand. People will just not support the girls like they do the guys.

Tiara, Like I said, I would love to be proven wrong. As long as the women and the "alternative lifestyles" support it, it might succeed. I'd rather use my Disposable Income on other activities.

This would be a dandy deal if we could land a WNBA team.

People spend money on the strangest things.

A WNBA franchise is something that I certainly don't understand or see any desire for. I have yet to actually meet a fan or supporter of the WNBA in real life.

Lots of info out there about how the league loses money & the NBA might pull the plug at any time. "New" franchise investment doesn't make sense.

These guys are trying to build a resume for some day being able to be a part of a major league franchise, they know the WNBA is a looser but if they show good management it adds to their credibility for a future opportunity.

I hope the WNBA comes to Tulsa. There were lots of people who didn't think the BOK Center would do good either. Deja vu.

At first I was skeptical about a WNBA franchise in Tulsa. But the more investigating I've done, I'm now convinced this would be a wonderful asset for Tulsa.

I'll say it again-

If you look at the markets that the WNBA is currently in, they're HUGE compared to Tulsa, yet almost all of teams are losing money. Places like Houston, Miami, Orlando, Portland, Clevelend, and Charlotte couldn't support a WNBA team.

What makes us different?
