OSU women top A&M for Big 12 title

 SAN ANTONIO — Oklahoma State defender Carson Michalowski headed in a corner kick from Colleen Dougherty in the 53rd minute Sunday as the Cowgirls defeated Texas A&M 1-0 to win the Big 12 Conference women's soccer championship.

The fifth-seeded Cowgirls (15-7-0, 8-5-0) earned the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, which starts Friday.

The second-seeded Aggies (14-6-2, 8-3-2) will learn their fate Monday when the selections are announced at 7 p.m.

It is the first time the Cowgirls have won the Big 12 Tournament since 2003. It was the 10th shutout of the season for Oklahoma State and freshman goalkeeper Adrianna Franch, which is a single-season school record.

OSU's victory also marked its first against Texas A&M. The Cowgirls entered the contest 0-14-2 all time against the Aggies.

"It's so exciting to win and beat A&M because I've obviously never beaten them," OSU senior captain Bridget Miller said. "It's just an awesome feeling. We were motivated even more because we knew the only chance we had to get into the NCAA Tournament was to win (the Big 12 Tournament)."

OSU's Franch, Annika Niemeier, Melinda Mercado, Kasey Langdon and Siera Strawser were named to the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament team. Mercado was named the tourney's defensive MVP.
