Oluseun Olaniran tapped home a loose ball just 97 seconds into sudden-death overtime to give defending champion Booker T. Washington a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten Oklahoma City Northwest in the Class 5A boys soccer semifinals Tuesday night at S.E. Williams Stadium.

The Hornets (15-2) will play for a second straight title on Saturday at Mustang. Northwest ended the year with a 14-1 record.

Senior midfielder Nathan Doll created the scoring opportunity when he dropped a 40-yard free kick from near the right sideline into the middle of the penalty area. Jose Martinez flicked the ball toward the goal where Knight goalkeeper Quyen Banh fumbled it, and Olaniran was on the spot to convert.

"That was a tremendous game between two excellent teams," said Hornet coach Mickey Miller. "They are very athletic up front and have scored a lot of goals this year. To hold them to just one is an accomplishment."

Northeast scored less than eight minutes into the game when Magdi Ismail, an imposing center forward, eluded a defender and found the back of the net from about 10 yards. Washington tied things less than five minutes later when Jahkil James headed home a corner kick by Jorge Estrada.

That's the way it ended in regulation, although Washington keeper Preston Langholz had to make two fine saves late in the first half, including a diving stop against Ismail about six minutes before intermission. Ismail also shoved a short-range shot just wide in the closing seconds of the first half.

Washington had the wind and most of the possession in the second half but could not turn that advantage into threatening scoring opportunities. However, by maintaining possession, the Hornets effectively took Ismail out of the game, and he frequently had to come back into Northwest's defensive zone to get into the flow of the game.

Miller cited James and defender James Burns as Washington's top performers.

"James was very physical," he said. "He won a lot of 50-50 balls, and that was a big factor.

"The people that Northwest has up front are fast and talented. James and Burns really played well against them. In fact, to be honest, I don't think they have played that well this year. But they really stepped it up tonight."

A slight drizzle fell throughout much of the game and made the ball and the field slick.

"The ball was really skipping out there and moving fast," Miller said. "The slick field and the wind made it difficult to control the ball and play a lot of possession.

"We were a little out of rhythm at the start, and they took advantage to jump on us for the early goal. But we gained composure and I thought we took it to them pretty well in the second half."

The statistics bore that out as Langholz did not have to make a save in the second half or in the short overtime period.
