Slide Show: BTW offense sputters in loss to Carl Albert

Midwest City Carl Albert produced a pair of almost identical goals in the first 22 minutes and made them stand for a 2-1 victory over Booker T. Washington in the semifinals of the girls Class 5A soccer tournament Tuesday night at S.E. Williams Stadium.
The loss prevented the Lady Hornets from making a second straight trip to the state championship game. They end the season with a 10-3 mark. Carl Albert will take a 13-2 record into the finals, which will be played Saturday at Mustang against Edmond Deer Creek.
A high-scoring game was expected Tuesday as the Lady Titans had scored 12 goals in their two previous playoff games and Washington had six goals in its two victories from one player, talented junior Kayla Nsien. And those expectations appeared correct when Carl Albert needed just 3:09 to get on the scoreboard.
Ciara Mitchell scored after she played a short corner kick, took a return pass on the upper left side of the penalty area and hooked a shot over Hornet keeper Alicia Zuern into the upper right corner of the net.
Washington tied the game with 19:52 left in the half with a thunderous 30-yard blast by Haley Keown.
The tie was short-lived as Carl Albert regained the lead just 71 seconds later when Washington failed to clear the ball from its defensive end. Titan Britni Walker got possession and maneuvered to virtually the same spot from where Mitchell had scored. She struck an almost identical shot, which followed essentially the same trajectory from well out on the left side of the penalty area into the upper right side of the net for what proved the final score of the game.
The remaining 58 minutes featured plenty of end-to-end action and skillful attacking by both teams, but the finishing by both was subpar. The Lady Hornets in particular failed to take advantage of their scoring opportunities and forced Carl Albert keeper Jennifer Tabor to make only one save in the game. The Hornets put only two of their final 11 shots on goal, and defenders blocked both of those.
Nsien, who played on both wings and in the middle, had several opportunities, often self-created with her blazing speed, but her shots were far off the mark.
Washington's most dangerous opportunity came with about five minutes left when Keown's low cross from the right side went all the way through the penalty box and an equally tantalizing return pass from the left side made its way just in front of the Titan goal before any of the Lady Hornets could get to it.
Carl Albert played much of the second half in a defensive mode, with nine or 10 players on its side of the field. But the Lady Titans made the most of a handful of counterattacking opportunities and ended up with an 8-7 advantage in shots in the final 40 minutes.
Carl Albert came close to getting a third goal when Walker fired a shot that was blocked by the Hornet defense, collected the rebound and put her second shot just over the crossbar.
