Slide Show: Kelley tops BTW to win title

Kyle Craft's goal midway through the second half, a blast from near the left edge of the penalty box, lifted Bishop Kelley to a 1-0 victory over Booker T. Washington in the Class 5A boys state championship soccer game Saturday at LaFortune Stadium.
The win earned the Comets (17-1) their third state title since 2005 and avenged a loss to Booker T. Washington (15-3) in last year's finals.
Although Kelley needed nearly 60 minutes before putting the ball into the net, the Comets appeared the dominant team throughout. The Comets, who appeared a step quicker to the ball throughout the game, finished the first half with a 5-4 edge in shots, two of which nearly put the Comets on the scoreboard.
Hornet keeper Preston Langholz made a fine save on a shot from point-blank range which suddenly emerged from a pack of players right in front of the Booker T. Washington goal, and Comet forward Max Moller hit the post with a shot with 16 minutes left in the first period.
Kelley took charge from the outset of the second half when it had the strong north wind at its back. The Comets launched eight shots on goal, versus none for the Hornets, and nearly scored three times before Craft produced the game-winner. Cameron Craig put a powerful shot over the ball, Langholz made an outstanding kick save, and Moller's header, off a long throw-in by Robby Simpson, was just wide a few minutes later.
Moller made up for that with some neat work down the right side and a superb pass across the top of the penalty box which
found an unmarked Craft, and he quickly converted for the game's only score.
"The key was our ability to move the ball and retain our composure," said Kelley coach Donivan Bradshaw. "Hats off to the players. They came out in the second half determined to take over the game, and they did. We slumped a little toward the end, but all teams go through periods like that. We moved the ball well and showed a lot of discipline today, and that's what we've done all year and what got us here."
Hornet coach Mickey Miller said Kelley was the more aggressive team.
"I just didn't see the Booker T. team out there today that I'd seen all year," Miller said. "We just didn't seem to start to play until there were about 12 minutes left in the game. We just didn't move the ball around very well at all at the start. "
Free kicks by Nathan Doll, who led Washington this year with 20 goals, are a major part of the Hornets offense, but Washington managed only two in the first half.
