Outdoor Tips with Jack Morris

Weather forecasters predicted warm and windy mornings for this week’s Zone 2 duck season opener, and it looks like these warm temperatures will last for a few days.

The biggest caution for duck hunters on days like this is to take it easy and be cautious as you are when temperatures are 20 or 30 degrees colder. The water is pretty cold and hypothermia is always a risk for duck hunters, even if it seems like it’s warm outside.

The ducks likely haven’t been too excited by the heat this weekend, either. In warm conditions, ducks will usually fly well for the first hour or so and that will be it until very late in the day. Ducks are insulated for cold water and cold weather; they just don’t handle the heat that well.

If they have food sources and aren’t harassed too much, they might stick around. The moon is waning but still about three-quarters full. Some birds might still be moving in.

The waterfowl season is 70 days long. Go out and enjoy yourself and blow a duck call. Maybe you’ll harvest some ducks, but you’re sure to enjoy being out on a nice morning.
