Bird Watch

Oklahoma has more kinds of sparrows in the winter months than in the summer months. One large and handsome winter resident is the white-crowned sparrow, which often occurs in flocks with other sparrow species.

White-crowned sparrows can be found in brushy areas and will visit bird feeders near suitable habitat. Bold black and white stripes on the head and the lack of any yellow on the face helps to identify them, although young birds in their first fall have dull brownish crown stripes instead. These younger birds are often kept at the margins of prime feeding areas by more dominant adult birds.
