Lengthy TV Slump For OSU

By BILL HAISTEN

Oklahoma State has not won a televised regular-season football game
since a 10-6 triumph over Missouri.
In 1986.
Current Cowboy freshman R.W. McQuarters was a fourth-grader.
O-State's television frustration should continue Thursday as Bob
Simmons makes his head-coaching debut against defending national
champion Nebraska (7 p.m., cable 25). Since that '86 win over
Mizzou, the Cowboys are 0-4 in regular-season TV contests.
The ESPN team at Lewis Field includes the underrated Mike
Patrick on play-by-play, former Kansas coach Mike Gottfried on
analysis and Dr. Jerry Punch on sidelines reports.
Gottfried likes Texas A&M to capture the national title, but he
believes the Huskers, instead of Florida State, should have been
the preseason No. 1 ``because they're the defending champs and
they've got a lot of players back.''
``I'm sure OSU will be sky-high for the game, with them being at home and
it's the opener for Simmons,'' Gottfried said. ``If OSU is going to be
competitive, they've got to shut down big plays of over 15 to 20 yards. To
me, (Nebraska's) Tommie Frazier will be a much, much better quarterback than
he was last year. He's really come of age as a passer.
``The kicking game will be a big part of this one. In the first game of
the season at the college and high school levels, special-teams play is the
most important phase of the game.''
* Gottfried was in Stillwater Tuesday and Wednesday to scout the Cowboys.
On Saturday, he'll work ESPN's coverage of Syracuse-North Carolina. On
Thursday, Sept. 7, he'll watch Boston College-Virginia Tech.
* Gottfried believes Oklahoma will emerge as Nebraska's biggest threat in
the Big Eight.
``Howard Schnellenberger may be one of the top three or four coaches in
the country,'' Gottfried said. ``OU has the talent to be a great team, but
they're weakness is experience at the quarterback position. That's where
Howard comes in; his strength is working with quarterbacks.''
* Because the game does feature high-profile Nebraska, Thursday's telecast
should have a higher rating than last year's Thursday average of 3.2. If
Nebraska-OSU does a 4.0 rating, it'll be seen in 2.6 million households.
Each ESPN ratings point represents 660,000 households.
* ESPN has presented Thursday night college games since 1990. The
all-time ratings leader: Houston-Miami, Sept. 12, 1991. The Hurricanes won,
40-10.
* Nebraska is 82-48-1 in network-televised games (19-3-1 on ESPN).
OSU is 22-17 in network appearances (3-6 on ESPN). The last time
television cameras captured an O-State victory was the Dec. 30,
1988 Holiday Bowl (an ESPN audience watched Barry Sanders' college
finale, a 62-14 Cowboy roll over Wyoming).
* Oklahoma City's KWTV channel 9 and Tulsa's Channel 6 will
simulcast three OU road games this season: Iowa State, Oct. 7;
Missouri, Oct. 28; Kansas State, Nov. 4. On-air assignments haven't
been set, but Channel 6 sports director John Walls will be involved.
* Next Tuesday in Toronto, Walls will undergo laser surgery to correct
nearsightedness. Three hours later, he'll tape an InterSport special on the
Ryder Cup.
* Big Four coaches' shows: Arkansas' Danny Ford, 5:30 p.m.
Mondays, Prime cable 27; OSU's Simmons, 9 p.m. Mondays, cable 27;
Tulsa's Dave Rader, 7 p.m. Mondays, TCI cable 9.
A Schnellenberger program airs on Friday at 4 p.m. on cable 27
and Saturday at 10 a.m. on Channel 6. The Oklahoma playback show is
set for 7 p.m. Sundays on cable 27.
* ESPN will provide blanket coverage of Cal Ripken's 2,131st
consecutive game. On Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., Bob Ley will be at
Baltimore's Oriole Park at Camden Yards to host a live ``Outside
the Lines'' special on Ripken's career. On Wednesday at 6:30, the
Lou Gehrig record falls when the Orioles host California. Chris
Berman and Buck Martinez will call the game.
``It will be a privilege for me just to be in the ballpark,''
Berman said. ``Working this game will be a career highlight, but my
role is secondary. There's certainly no need to describe Cal Ripken
taking the field or coming to bat on September 6, 1995.''
* The Ripken moment won't be enough to save a sickly baseball season, and
the start of the NFL season only diminishes the public's interest in the
``national pastime'' and its wild-card races.
Five NFL games dot Tulsa televisions this weekend. KOKI cable
5-channel 23 carries Fox's Sunday doubleheader: San Francisco-New
Orleans (Pat Summerall-John Madden) at noon, Arizona-Washington
(Dick Stockton-Matt Millen) at 3.
KJRH channel 2's 3 o'clock contest is Kansas City at Seattle
(Jim Lampley-Bob Golic). On TNT cable 29 at 7 p.m., it's Buffalo at
Denver (Verne Lundquist-Pat Haden).
* On KTUL channel 8, ABC's Monday Night Football opener matches Dallas
and the New York Giants at East Rutherford, N.J. (Al Michaels-Dan
Dierdorf-Frank Gifford, 8 o'clock kickoff). The Cowboys' record in season
openers is 26-8-1, but their mark on Mondays is just 25-22.
* The contract of Channel 2 sports director Al Jerkens expires on
Sept. 30, but news director Peggy Phillip says a new three-year
deal will be iced ``very, very soon.''
``There is no way I'm going to let anything come between the
relationship of Al and this television station. He is very
important to us,'' Phillip said. ``Al is with us for another three
years. I think the world of him professionally and personally.''
* The University of Tulsa's Nov. 4 game at Brigham Young will be
televised live on KWHB cable 7-channel 47.
* Once again, Tulsa television stations are using helicoptors in
their coverage of area high school football games. Friday
highlights air on Channel 8 and Channel 2 from 10:15-10:35 p.m. and
on Channel 6 from 10:20-10:35.
* KAKC am1300's high school preview show, hosted by K.C. Bishop,
airs from 6-6:30 on Fridays throughout the prep season. Bishop's
preseason pick to win the Class 6A title: Muskogee.
