Georgia's Richt brings road-tested Bulldogs to OSU
The Bulldogs are 30-4 in true road games under Richt over eight seasons.

While his overall mark of 82-22 is impressive, Mark Richt's road record is remarkable.

In Richt's eight seasons as Georgia's head football coach, the Bulldogs are 30-4 in true road games.

On Saturday, 13th-ranked Georgia opens the college football season by challenging favored Oklahoma State at Boone Pickens Stadium. The Cowboys are No. 9 nationally. In road games against Top 25 opponents, Richt's Bulldogs are 10-2.

Poised quarterback play, Richt says, has been the key to Georgia's success rate on the road.

"Quarterback is the one position that has to handle the pressure of the stadium (and) crowd noise," Richt said. "He's got to communicate everything to the team and keep his poise if things get a little rocky."

Richt says former Bulldog QBs David Greene, D.J. Shockley and Matthew Stafford were as poised as they were talented.

"And the team in general has always been the kind that will fight the whole 60 minutes," Richt added.

When the Bulldogs play at Boone Pickens Stadium, they will be led by a new starting quarterback — fifth-year senior Joe Cox.

Referring to Richt's success on the road, Cox said, "You don't really think about it until people (talk) about exactly what the record is. I think it's something to be proud of. It definitely says something that our road record is better than our home record. It's something we want to keep going."

Since Richt became the Georgia coach in 2001, the Bulldogs have a higher winning percentage on the road (.882) than on their home turf at Sanford Stadium in Athens (42-9, .824).

"Over a number of years, there is a consistency with what they do," OSU coach Mike Gundy said of the Bulldogs. "Coach Richt has a philosophy that he believes in, and in my personal opinion, he's not going to change it for Oklahoma State. They're comfortable with what they do."

Cox says Richt's relaxed personality is an asset when the Bulldogs visit a hostile stadium.

"When we go on long trips, he tries to make it as business as possible," Cox said. "We don't have a lot of time where we're just sitting around. All we do is talk about what's at hand (and) what our business is in that town, and we take care of it.

"(Richt's) demeanor, as far as being a calm guy, really helps out. There's never been a game where we sensed he was tight about it. That definitely helps."

On Georgia Tech's home field, Richt's Bulldogs are 4-0. Georgia is 15-3 in road games against SEC opponents Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Tennessee since 2001.

Georgia faces Florida, its fiercest Southeastern Conference rival, on a neutral field each season in Jacksonville, Fla. While Richt-coached Bulldog teams haven't had a chance to win at Florida's "Swamp," they have recorded at least one victory in every other SEC stadium.

The Oklahoma State game represents only the third time Richt has taken the Bulldogs on the road for a nonconference contest. In 2003, Georgia won 30-0 at Clemson. Last season, Georgia prevailed 27-10 at Arizona State.

No doubt about it, this game with Georgia is going to be very tough.
The Bulldogs just continue to recruit top, big & fast players from a hotbed of recruiting. The Bulldogs just reload with players chomping at the bit to get their chance to shine.
Richt is a very good coach of a very talented, yet untested team. It's very similar to two years ago when OSU went into Athens with a high powered offense that a quicker, bigger UGA shut down.
Of course, this year OSU is more talented, more experienced and with a better quarterback in Zac Robinson rather than Bobbie Reid.
Coach Mike Gundy is more experienced than two years ago, too.
Having the game in Stillwater with a full house will definitely be an advantage OSU must utilize.
A loss by either team is not going to be a season destroyer, but it sure will be a momentum slower.
As an OSU fan, I'm very excited, yet nervous about this game. This game probably means more to OSU's program than to UGA's.
An OSU loss and this paper, the OUklahoman, will heap tons of negative press. This paper is much better about supporting OSU, but the OUklahoman is just waiting for OSU to slip up so they can continue to pump out propaganda for OU supremacy within the state.
That's why the Tulsa World is the best paper in the state. Too bad, the OUklahoman can't seem to support all of our Oklahoma schools with equal zeal.
So, with that in mind, GO POKES!!

It's impossible!! OSU is in the pre-season top 10 and getting more praise heaped on it than anytime in recent memory yet the first thing we read from an OSU fan is how unfairly they are treated by the media.

GET THE FREAKING CHIP OFF YOUR SHOULDER!

You've got an, alleged, unbiased sportscaster on our own okc station channel 6 who is an osu employee and wears an orange tie to every event in his attempt to dress like Eddie Sutton. The Tulsa World promotes OSU very well also, yet your biggest season in years starts with some goofball groaning about how osu is about to get negative press from the local media!

This is why osu simply can't be taken seriously as a big time program. There's nothing big time about being OU's red-headed step child.

GH, easy there now. You're going to judge a program by one fan's remarks? And he/she is free to give it, I'm sure there is bias at any newspaper, TV or radio station towards the Land Grabbers, after all they have had more success in football and people tend to side with winners even if they have no allegiance to a school apart from that.

On the other hand I'm sure you feel slighted at times when OU and Ok State get way more attention that Tulsa does by the Tulsa media although most of it remains positive as far as I can tell. Wishing the Golden Hurricane a great season, my 2nd favorite team! ; )

Anyway, about Mark Richt, I think he's a great coach and he'll have his charges ready. Hopefully OSU plays mistake-free football and the offense fires on all cylinders and the defense shows marked improvement!

Tuff opener for OSU. The SEC has speed and more speed combined with great defense.

Richt will have them ready to play, he is one of the top 15 coaches in America.

Tuff to call, it will be a great game and 3 points might make the differnce either way.

You certainly play the role of disgruntled OSU fan well. The papers have treated OSU just fine. Start winning some big games and they will do it even more.

Do not blame the media for Oklahoma State's lack of success. A paper can't write about success that does not occur.

I agree with the coverage. Win Saturday and it will be bigger, but there will always be someone not happy with it.

(Bobdog has his orange on and is ready to see the Cowboys walk the walk.)

Mark Richt is a classy guy and terrific coach, but that 30-4 road record is their record against non-conference opponents. And UGA, like most of the SEC schools, plays a cupcake non-conf schedule almost every year. Very few games are even remotely competitive, so you have to take that record with a grain of salt. That being said, the game Saturday should be a great matchup and a launch pad for one school or the other.
