Grow up fast or face a race for third in the Big 12 South
OU's special teams block a field goal by BYU during Saturday's game. The Cougars scored a touchdown with 3:03 left in the game to take the one-point lead before holding on for the victory. Stephen Pingry / Tulsa World

ARLINGTON, Texas — No. 3 in the nation? A possible two-time Heisman Trophy winner?
How about No. 3 in the South Division of the Big 12 Conference? Or No. 4 , No. 5 or No. 6?
And speculation about Sam Bradford winning a second Heisman in 2009 has been replaced with speculation over Bradford's availability the rest of the season.
That brutal reality faces Oklahoma's football team after the third-ranked Sooners were shocked Saturday night by No. 20 Brigham Young, 14-13, in a game that resembled how the Sooners have played the last game in recent seasons instead of their first.
At least OU doesn't have to wonder any longer how it would have fared this season if Bradford and tight end Jermaine Gresham had decided to leave early for the National Football League.
Gresham didn't suit up for the contest after injuring a knee last week in practice. Bradford joined him on the sideline after injuring the AC joint in his right shoulder with seven seconds left in the first half.
No one is certain at this point when OU's two All-Americans will play again. Or even if they will return this season.
Loyal OU fans undoubtedly will maintain the Sooners would have found a way to avoid the stunning loss to 22-point underdog BYU if Bradford had played the entire game. But realists would debate that point for one very logical reason — OU's offensive line.
Or, to be more precise, the inept play of the O-line.
If you listened to offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson recently, you figured the rebuilt line would have a coming out party in the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium. Instead, the $1.2 billion house that Dallas owner Jerry Jones built turned into a House of Horrors.
At OU's media day, a defiant Wilson said, "it's documented that everyone is concerned about our line. I'm not. At all."
Wilson better be more than concerned this Sunday morning. He ought to feel downright sick over what he saw last night from a unit that got thoroughly whipped and let frustration turn into numerous drive-killing penalties.
And here's the most distressing part: The only returning O-line starter, All-America tackle Trent Williams, played a key role in Bradford's injury. It was painfully obvious that the senior's switch from right to left tackle is still a work in progress after he allowed Coleby Clawson to blow past him untouched, giving the linebacker a wide-open path to Bradford.
Clawson's clean hit drove Bradford's right shoulder hard into the Cowboys Stadium turf, ending the Sooner junior's night and perhaps his season.
It's questionable if OU could have won with a healthy Bradford. With those four new starters in the offensive line and some young receivers playing like rookies, Bradford didn't come close to playing at the level that won him the college's game most prestigious individual award last season.
The aforementioned OU loyalist would point out the defense lived up to its preseason billing. No it didn't. Not really.
The defense got lucky when one sure BYU touchdown ended with a fumble in OU's end zone. And when the Sooner defenders were needed most, they couldn't stop BYU's 16-play, 78-yard drive that produced the game-winning touchdown with 3:03 left.
Like his 11th OU team, coach Bob Stoops' opening night was less than a smash hit.
OU entered the game with national-title hopes. But with Oklahoma State thumping Georgia and Baylor winning at Wake Forest, OU could be fighting Texas Tech and Texas A&M for fourth in the South Division unless a whole bunch of Sooners grow up and heal up in a hurry.

dococt...Great game??? That was a terribly sloppy game full of mistakes. Sittler, you're right on. This offensive line was bad all night and especially at critical times. The defense, as has been their usual performance in recent years, gave up a long touchdown drive at the end of the game. They can't even force a field goal! If not for Bradford leading comebacks they would have lost several more games the last couple of years.

I say fire "Big game Bob" and his entire staff. I'm not from Oklahoma but have become a fan of the Sooners, Cowboys, and Hurricane since I have been here. Losing 5 bowl games in a row and then this debacle it is clear to me something is amiss in Norman. New coaching search should begin now. OU should be able to get any coach from any school they wish. Saban maybe?

Boise State, West Virginia, and now BYU. How can the Sooners allow the impossible to happen again for the third time? Looks like the Shorthorns are going to have a feast.

It's all about stepping up in adversity. Let's see how the mighty Sooners handle this. Should be interesting.

Offensive play calling was slow, offensive line was not well prepared but I beleive the slow call playing caused some of the penalties. Defensively players got tired (not in good shape) and weak on pass coverage, especially left side of defense. BYU picked up that weakness. OU continued their poor playing like in BCS bowl.

How much proof is needed. Bob Stoops is a 'Paper Tiger'.
We have the talent but don't know how to use it.
Time to hit the 'Reset Button' with the Paper Tiger. Kick him upstairs, make the hard decision yet.

Sittler you sound like a Sooner fan than a columnist. A lot of Sooner fans are spoiled because the Sooners in the old day could recruit all the good players so they could win all the time. You have to be lucky to do it today. You'll make it sound like the Sooners lost 50 to nothing rather than 14 to 13. The only mistake the coash made was not calling time out on the one foot line.
I still like Bob and company. I like winning games most of the time even when we lose the big one. BYU had a seasoned team. Yet bearly beat our rebuilt team. Come on support our team. Go Sooners

Sittler, your dog:master loyalty to Bob Stoops continues to cloud your failing grip on reality. Bradford going down was no doubt a stab through the heart of this team. However, even with Bradford in the game, there's no way this coaching staff would have given him a chance to pull out the victory. Nothing in this team's performance indicated the slightest change of plan from last year's barely forgivable loss to Florida, the accountability for which lies almost entirely with Stoops. Good luck getting him to take responsibility for either of these losses though as long as media yahoos like you continue to give him a free pass. I'd like to know how you explain the delay of game penalty with 4th and inches while your QB looks to the sidelines for instructions (tell him to call a friggin' TO!!!), or asking the true freshman to kick a 54 yard field goal, as if he were a proven Jakowski or Vinatieri. And I still fail to understand the point of this ridiculous hurry up, wait, then look to the sidelines offense.
Numbers notwithstanding, nobody can seriously suggest that BYU played a good game. Jenks or Union coulda given that team a run for their money last night.
Saddest of all is Bradford: Stoops apparently is such an unchecked egomaniac that he let an exceptional though necessarily naive kid pass up more money than God has on the farfetched hope that the Sooners could win a National Championship with a) half the talent of last year and b) the same mediocre coaching talent.
Stoops ain't gonna get it unless guys like you start calling him out. I reckon doing that might mean a few less pats on the back and/or more limited sideline access.
I'm pickin' on you, but my comments could apply to anyone in the Oklahoma media. Show some backbone and call a spade a spade, please!

You folks calling for the job of Bob Stoops are laughable. Some changes are in order, no doubt, but there are not many coaches around the country better than Stoops.
If Oklahoma were to fire the man, the Oklahoma program would fall off for a few years. Doubting that would be foolish.
Also, you don't become a paper title winning Big 12 Championships at the rate Bob Stoops does. Any other coach in the conference would love to have his success.
Some of you people need to stop acting like you care what is in the best interest of Oklahoma football.

Im a die hard OU fan, what I watched on Sat was probably the worst I've seen since the TCU loss. Yes even the bowl games. Had Bradford not been hurt I do think OU would have won (barely) they were not good with him in, but I don't think it's time to panic and fire Stoops. Long season ahead I'm afraid.

The comment that BYU was a seasoned team is not factual. They had the same number of starters returning on their offensive line that OU did, one. (He had a broken hand.) They started a juco transfer at cornerback. They went with their second-string tailback. This is not the best team in the MWC. TCU is. Once again, many good players that had performed well throughout fall camp were relegated to watching the game from the sideline. That is how you get experience. Let them play, if you have enough confidence in them that you laud them in the press.
