Losses are luster-busters for OU, OSU

STILLWATER — Well, they still have Bedlam.

Two stinking weeks into the college football season and Bedlam could be the only thing left for Oklahoma State and Oklahoma to look forward to the rest of 2009.

As recent as two weeks ago, both had visions of grandeur when it came to this season's edition of Bedlam. The grand plan was for both the Cowboys and Sooners to enter the Nov. 28 contest at OU with 11-0 records.

A week ago, OU failed to hold up its end of the undefeated deal when it lost to a 22-point underdog Brigham Young team. A week later, OSU's 11-0 goal blew up in the No. 5 Cowboys' facemasks when a 15-point underdog Houston club came into the Pokes' house Saturday and hung a 45-35 upset on them.

Yes, I'm fully aware it's a long season. And the better part of it is still there for the taking for the Bedlam brothers. Both remain squarely in the running for such things as a Big 12 Conference championship and a BCS bowl bid.

But let's get real. Both teams have been exposed by two teams of hungry Cougars. They may not have enough time to solve some huge problems and fill the gaping holes.

You know all about OU's horrid offensive line play against BYU's Cougars and the loss of Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Sam Bradford for an undetermined time because of a shoulder injury.

There were a lot of reasons why yesterday's OSU loss to the Houston Cougars seemed a lot like OU's defeat. And none of them were good.

The Cowboys lost their All-America running back and preseason Heisman candidate Kendall Hunter to an ankle injury late in the second quarter. After the stunning loss before 50,875 spectators at Boone Pickens Stadium, coach Mike Gundy said he had no clue about the severity of Hunter's injury or how long he'll be out.

And the poor play of OSU's defense mirrored the Sooners' O-line struggles. But the thing that should have OSU supporters concerned is that while OU's O-line was expected to start slow, all we've been told and heard since last spring was that OSU's defense would be vastly improved because there was a new coordinator in town in Bill Young.

Some talked of naming a wing of the renovated stadium for Young after OSU's defensive effort in the 24-10 win over No. 13 Georgia in the season opener. But many of the orange-clad OSU supporters undoubtedly had other names in mind for Young after his defense fell completely apart against Houston.

The Cougars' offense gashed OSU for a whopping 512 yards. Houston didn't punt in the first half, and the only time the Cougars didn't score in the first 30 minutes was when they stopped themselves with turnovers.

Granted, Houston runs an entirely different offense than Georgia. And everyone knew the potential was there for the Cougars' wide-open passing attack to pile up some yards and points — just like it did a year ago in a 56-37 loss to the Cowboys.

But Young's arrival and the infusion of some more talent had the Cowboy Nation believing things finally would be different on defense. There was a difference Saturday, but it was Houston compiling 29 more yards of total offense than it did a year ago.

So what are we to think about this defense? Same song, fifth verse of the Gundy era? Or Houston is just one game and this unit won't continue to be filled with holes like it did after beating Houston in 2008 at Boone's Farm?

"I think we're better," Gundy said of this defense. "I think we're more athletic, I think our scheme is good. But I'm sitting here saying that after they got 500 yards and everybody is looking at me like I'm crazy."

OSU's defensive improvement has a long way to go and a short time to get there. Houston quarterback Case Keenum was sensational, but the Cowboys helped him by not recording a single sack and playing undisciplined in space, with sloppy tackling.

Young, who warned OSU supporters not to get too excited after the Georgia win, acknowledged that he didn't see Saturday's sieve-like performance coming. Young had good reason to believe OSU would have some answers this time around for Houston.

"A lot of the things they did are similar to what our offense runs," Young said. "So we'd been working against it all of two-a-days (practices). That's why we felt in a little bit of a comfort zone going into the game."

Gundy vowed that he'd be back in the office early Sunday, working on ways to get better. His message to his staff and players was they couldn't allow themselves to stay down long after being upset.

"Every game is a big game at this level, and you've got to play a bunch of them," Gundy said. "So you just can't get hung up on it (loss)."

A bunch of games remain. But none now will be as big as it could have been. And come Nov. 28, Bedlam may be all OSU and OU have left.

I think the offense turned the ball over at the start of drives twice late in the game. You can't blame the defense for that. Those turnovers, a missed field goal and kick OSU didn't field at the end of the first half are more why OSU lost the game. Especially the 2 late-game turnovers. To expect a defense to be hugely, hugely improved just because you hire a new coordinator wasn't realistic. Human nature maybe but not realistic. The guy OSU had last year, Beckman, wasn't a bad coach. He's a head coach now and his team won a big game this weekend. The offense's late game early-in-the-drive turnovers with a chance to win on the line depress me more than how the defense played.

We simply got out played! You can put what ever spin you want on it, but the cowboys got out played by a far inferior team. Whether we came in over rated or over confident seems to be up for debate! The cowboys couldn't handle the presure and choked!

I wouldn't call Houston a "far inferior team", Frank. Obviously not.
The players got out-played and the coaches got out-coached.

Houston was not inferior, but obviously superior to a greatly overvalued team. Expectations of OSU blow-out against a team that should cruise through Conf. USA were never justified. Did I miss something but did OSU overwhelm sme great teams at the end of last season to merit such optimism. Looks like the "Big 12" is just the "Medium 12", like Stoops is "Small Game Bob."

Look at this way. After TU beats OU the Bedlam series still will be able to determine who are the second and third best teams in the state are. There should be all sorts of national interest story lines surrounding that over hyped game!!! But, if the Tulsa World wants to cover the best game that will be played this year in the state, plan on circling Nov. 7 on your calendar. That's when your TU Golden Hurricane will have a chance to beat the Top 10 Houston Cougars. Finally, yesterday's beating of OSU was only an upset in bettor's eyes. The best team coaching and personnel-wise won as expected by many who understand that the Big 12, once again, is closer to the Smurf 12. Can you say Toledo???

It appears both OSU and ou were overrated or played like all they had to do was show up.

It's better to lose early and there's plenty of teams that have: OSU, ou, Ohio State, ND, FSU and UGA.
It's early and there's time to get on a roll.

Sure, it hurts to lose to Houston and BYU, but a win over Texas (for OSU, not ou), Tech and the rest of the Big 12 would certainly erase the pain of yesterday.

One thing's for certain -- the Cowboys nor Swooners should take themselves too seriously for the rest of the year. That would be another mistake.

Better get back to work, OSU and ou.

Funny that this article comes directly after Dave's "Times Are Changing" article for OSU. Seems like Saturday's game was much of what we've seen from them before. They are still a very good team and can have a good year, but I believe much of the hype was a bit premature.

OSU did dog it Saturday! Where is the chemistry on the offensive side. The greatest D in the world is and efficient Offense.
