Up close: OU's Dominique Franks

Oklahoma's Dominique Franks returns a fumble for a touchdown last season against Texas A&M. Franks has several connections to TU, which the Sooners play this week. MIKE SIMONS/Tulsa World file

NORMAN — Tulsa is coming to Owen Field Saturday. Which, if recent history has taught us anything, means lots of footballs spiraling above Owen Field.

It should be an interesting day to be an Oklahoma cornerback. It should be very interesting for Tulsa native Dominique Franks.

"I know Brian DeShane, Jamad Williams," Franks said of TU's offensive lineman and running back. "I have a little buddy that's still at Union (Luke Snider) who just committed to them."

That's not what makes Saturday personal, though. It's that Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne may throw it 35 times as he did in last week's 44-10 rout of New Mexico.

"Whenever the ball's being thrown, we've got to go up and attack it, just play like we're the receivers," Franks said. "Hopefully we'll come up with interceptions and take them back for scores."

That no-holds-barred attitude helped Franks become an All-Big 12 corner last year. It put him on course toward an even bigger junior season, something he seemed to realize during two-a-days last month when he said of the Thorpe Award: "I would love to have it, but I try not to worry about it too much. Right now I just want to win games."

So far, the Sooners are 1-for-2 in that regard. It bothers Franks that he didn't play better in OU's season-opening loss to BYU, a game in which Cougars wide receiver McKay Jacobson ran by him and made a 49-yard catch.

On that deep ball, were your eyes in the backfield and not on Jacobson?

They were. I thought the quarterback was throwing it somewhere else, and I was going to make a play on another receiver. But he ended up throwing it to mine. My eyes were in a bad spot. I'll clean those up and go back to making plays like I did last year.

You almost made one last week with your punt return for a touchdown. When did you realize it was coming back (on an illegal block)?

When I was running, I didn't know. But when I scored and not too many of my teammates were running back to me, I was like, 'Man, it must be a penalty.' I looked back and I saw the flag on the ground. I was like, 'Stuff happens.' But we've got a lot more football. People make mistakes. Hopefully we'll get one this week.

How do you cope with TU's offense?

With those guys, you never know what you're gonna get. You've got a great quarterback that's very mobile, and they've got great receivers on either side. They've got a lot of playmakers at the receiver spot and also at running back. It's gonna be on us to be disciplined and read the formation and know what's coming.

Jamad Williams is from Midwest City. How do you know him?

We played against each other in high school. We became friends and we talk a lot.

I am so glad to hear D. Franks say we have to "attack the ball, and go up after ball as though you are the receivers" that's exactly what you have to do. Most of the corners have their back to the ball and feel the receiver is suppose to catch the ball. If you are the defender he's not suppose to catch "nuthin". Dom, holler @ yo boys on the front line, a lot of balls could have been knocked down or deflected against BYU if they got their hands up coming off that block.
