Anatomy of an upset
What will it take for TU to win at OU? The only coach to do it in 90 years tells us.

OU's Gerald McCoy forces a fumble against Idaho State. TU needs to hope the Sooners can't do the same against the Hurricane. Stephen Pingry/Tulsa World

David Rader is the only TU football coach to beat Oklahoma in Norman in the past 90 years, when his Golden Hurricane pulled off a 31-24 victory in 1996. Now a college football analyst for Fox 23 Sports, Rader gave his keys for another TU win.

1. Turnovers

"TU needs to have zero, and Oklahoma has to have some. Our 1996 game started with a turnover and it just energized our whole bench. Noseguard Ryan Farley made a great play (forcing De'Mond Parker to fumble on the first play from scrimmage) and it set the tone."

2. Special teams

"People call them hidden yardage, when it comes to special teams. Can Tulsa kick off and keep Oklahoma 80 yards from the goal line? Can Tulsa take kickoffs and go 60 yards to the goal line? Can Tulsa place punts inside the 10 and return punts outside the 30?"

3. Belief in winning

"You have to have a mental belief beyond your emotional belief. You have to go into every game thinking you're going to win. Sometimes when you play people that are rated high, you think, we can win if we do this. Other times, you go in knowing we're going to win doing it this way. This game is beyond just emotions."

Ignatz, A nice place where Democrats hold every office in the County. (9/19/2009 9:29:12 AM)
True, but too bad ole Dave couldn't practice what he preached. Taking out the excellent season when TU won the Holiday Bowl Dave coached teams lost twice as many as they won.
