NORMAN — Brandon Caleb swears he avoids the media, and that he wasn't reading or hearing last week's accounts of Oklahoma's need for a second wide receiver, a complement to Ryan Broyles.

Saturday afternoon against Tulsa, however, he played like he got the message loud and clear.

Broyles finished with bigger numbers — 11 catches, 128 yards and three touchdowns — but it was Caleb who broke from the gate with five grabs for 104 yards and two scores in the first half.

"He's been grinding and has always had a positive attitude," Broyles said of the junior who came in with nine catches and 123 yards for his career. "I'm definitely so glad for him and proud of the man."

Caleb beat cornerback Kenny D. Sims for a 7-yard score on third-and-goal late in the first quarter, then ran behind the entire befuddled Tulsa secondary to start a 63-yard scoring play early in the second.

"We kind of caught them off-balance," said quarterback Landry Jones. "Those are the kind of balls you just want to play catch-and-throw with."

Sims tried making up for Caleb's 10-yard head start, but was stiff-armed away beginning at the TU 20-yard line.

"I didn't really plan for it," Caleb said of the stiff-arm. "I just wanted to make sure I got in the end zone."

The bigger picture found Caleb wanting to make sure he got in OU's rotation, after dropping as many passes as he caught (one) in last week's 64-0 shutout of Idaho State. The Sooners started Broyles, Adron Tennell and Cameron Kenney before turning to Caleb in their second series.

Caleb took it from there.

"I just wanted to play hard and show the coaches I can make plays," he said.

Done?

"I think so," he answered.

"We do have more and more confidence in Brandon and going to him and his competitiveness," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "It's showing. It's exciting, really."
