OU Notebook: Nothing new on Bradford

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops doesn't know whether Bradford will be ready for Saturday night's game at No. 17 Miami on Oct. 3, but said it won't be a game-time decision. CHARLIE RIEDEL / AP

The only member of the Oklahoma staff speaking about Sam Bradford after practice Wednesday evening was Kenny Mossman, the assistant athletic director who relayed that Bradford's status hadn't changed since Tuesday.

Meaning, Bradford was still practicing as he recovers from the shoulder injury suffered during OU's Sept. 5 opener against BYU, but that no decision had been made as to whether he could return to play Saturday night at Miami.

Coach Bob Stoops sent that dispatch through Mossman before leaving practice to appear at the OU volleyball team's Leukemia Awareness Night.

OU volleyball coach Santiago Restrepo's 4-year-old son, Javier, died of leukemia July 31, and Stoops was scheduled to sign autographs to raise money for the OU Medical Center's Children's Hospital. Quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel also didn't turn out for post-practice interviews.

Mossman indicated that any update on Bradford's status would be released in statement form before Saturday's 7 p.m. kickoff.

Money ball: With Big 12 Conference play coming next week, here's a brief look at some financial figures from OU's four non-conference games:

  • BYU: The Sooners got a $2.25 million paycheck from ESPN and the Dallas Cowboys, plus 1,000 tickets behind the team bench, four suites and 100 parking passes, all for the honor of playing in Jerry Jones' new palace, getting their Heisman-winning quarterback hurt and falling flat on their face.

  • Idaho State: OU paid the Bengals $500,000 to come to Norman for a 64-0 beatdown. For the OU offense, that's $7,812.50 for each point scored. Or $886.52 for each yard gained. For the OU defense, that's $11,363.63 for each yard allowed. Or $29,411.76 for each tackle-for-loss. Or $500,000 for each third-down conversion. Who says money can't buy happiness?

  • Tulsa: The Golden Hurricane got $250,000 for the experience of losing 45-0 to the Sooners. That's the same thing OU got for playing at Chapman Stadium in 2007. In 2011, OU will pay Tulsa $350,000. Under this contract, the visiting team also gets 125 game programs.

  • Miami: Within 90 days, Oklahoma will receive a check from Miami for $350,000. That's the same amount OU paid Miami for the 2007 game in Norman. Big 12 refs will work the game in Miami (ACC refs worked the game in Norman). Any breach of contract would have required a $750,000 buyout. The visitor also gets 60 bench passes and 5,000 tickets (including up to 330 band and spirit seats and 300 comp tickets).

For the record, then, the Sooners netted $1.85 million for non-conference action.

No mercy: One school of thought is that it would have been better for OU had Miami beaten Virginia Tech last week, or at least played better than a 31-7 washout. The idea is that beating a higher-ranked, undefeated Miami makes for a quicker climb up the polls. Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables doesn't look at it that way.

"I don't care," he said. "Somebody else may be above me that (thinks that), but we don't sit in our staff meetings and talk like, 'Now, in order for us to win a championship. . . .' I'm just telling you, we don't. Like, 'Aw man, I wish they would've won.' Because it doesn't matter. All the other years, too, 'Oh, so-and-so, I wish we'd have played a hard schedule' — it all works out.
