OU Notebook: How's everybody feeling?

Oklahoma is already shorthanded at receiver heading into Saturday's showdown against Texas. Could the Sooners be missing a lineman as well?

Starting left guard Brian Simmons left Saturday's victory over Baylor in the third quarter with a knee injury. And while Kevin Wilson didn't have an update on the senior's condition Sunday, he did talk about how important Simmons and left tackle Trent Williams are to OU's offense.

"We've probably been a little better over there behind Brian and Trent just because of the youth (on the right side)," Wilson said.

Down in Austin, meanwhile, running backs Vondrell McGee (shoulder) and Tre Newton (mild concussion) left Texas' 38-14 victory over Colorado Saturday night with injuries of their own.

"I thought Fozzy (Whitaker) did great and Cody (Johnson) did some good things," coach Mack Brown told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram about his backups.

"We may have to use both of them next week."

The Longhorns need more production from whomever they use, after rushing for 46 yards on 25 carries against lowly Colorado.

Well isn't that special: The Sooners were somewhat of a mess on special teams heading into last year's Texas game, and it cost them in the form of Jordan Shipley's 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. OU has been sharper in kick coverage so far this season, but it doesn't make Saturday's situation any less dangerous.

Longhorn freshman D.J. Monroe leads the country in kickoff returns and has already brought back two for touchdowns. Shipley ranks fourth in punt returns, and he, too, has run back two for touchdowns.

The Sooners seem equipped to hang with Shipley, who ranks third nationally in punt return defense. OU is 29th in kickoff return defense.

It seems Monroe might get his chances, since just one of Matt Moreland's 35 kickoffs has resulted in a touchback.
