Big Game Bob?
STEPHEN HOLMAN/Tulsa World file

LAWRENCE, Kan. — This much is certain: It is impossible to practice winning. If such a thing could be rehearsed, Oklahoma this season would be much better at it.
Oh, college football teams practice endless scenarios that present opportunities to win. Coaches prepare players for what to do in this situation or that situation. Success is seldom an accident.
But how does one translate all the preparation into victory on game day?
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops shrugs his shoulders.
"There isn't just one thing," Stoops said. "Everything needs to continue to improve."
Stoops should know. Since he's been at OU, no one has coached more victories. No one has participated in more national championship games. No one has won more Big 12 Conference crowns.
Yet, here sit Stoops' Sooners, 3-3 this season, ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press poll.
The three teams they've beaten were nothing special: a bug-on-the-windshield Idaho State, a bug-eyed Tulsa and an injury-bugged Baylor. But the three teams they've lost to were all ranked in the Top 25, and all three games were played outside of Norman.
Just like this week's opponent, No. 24 Kansas. The Jayhawks (5-1) and Sooners kick off at 2:30 p.m.
"We realize," Stoops said, "it's another big challenge."
Stoops was once "Big Game Bob," purveyor of bold decisions that almost always turned up right and frequently became the difference in games. At home or on the road, ranked opponent or roadkill, close game or blowout, it seems Stoops couldn't turn a losing hand.
In the five seasons between 2000 (when he had recruited a good portion of the team) and 2004, Stoops' record in games outside the state of Oklahoma was 26-5 (a winning percentage of .839). But in the five seasons since, Stoops is just 15-14 beyond the border (.517).
In close games — games in which the final score was decided by seven points or less — the dropoff is just as sharp. From 2000-04, the Sooners were 9-3 in close games. From 2005-09, OU is 8-9.
The numbers the last five seasons would suggest that times in Norman have changed. They're particularly telling this season, as the Sooners are 0-3 outside the Sooner State, and 0-3 in close games.
To be fair, the OU offense — already gutted from the record-setting unit of 2008 by the graduation of four linemen and three receivers — has been crippled with the loss of its two best players, tight end Jermaine Gresham and quarterback Sam Bradford. Three defeats by a total of five points against ranked teams away from home might look a little different if Gresham and Bradford were healthy.
"We've got good players," said offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, "but we're replugging a little more than we'd like to to get that momentum going again."
It's the "replugging" that has set the Sooners back more than anything this season. So many key components of this team have so little experience partially because they were not asked to contribute at all last season. While the Sooners were setting all sorts of amazing and astounding scoring records, the backups — this year's starters — watched from the sideline.
In retrospect, OU was forced to score 60 points a game the second half of 2008. Without such eye-popping numbers, the Sooners likely never would have overtaken Texas — whom they lost to at midseason — in the human polls and would not have played for the national championship.
But leaving those starters on the field for so long last season has left a dent this season. Six games in, the offensive line remains under construction, and the receiver corps has shown no consistency.
"After we lost to Texas (last season), we kind of picked ourselves up and started playing pretty good ball," said OU assistant coach Jay Norvell. "That's what we've got to do now. We're capable of playing so much better, and if we can get everybody rolling like we're capable of, we feel like we can win this game and continue to play well and win more games down the stretch. That's kind of the idea."
So how does it happen? How do the Sooners resuscitate their season? How does practicing hard and having a good attitude translate to victory on game day?
"Everybody's focus can be better," said senior tackle Trent Williams. "Just paying more attention to detail."
Williams was a high school senior the last time OU struggled like this, in 2005. He watched that team go through hard times, including a loss to Texas, but it came together and rallied to win six of its last seven. Four of those were away from Norman, and five were decided by a touchdown or less.
"Those little things add up," said freshman quarterback Landry Jones. "You have to pick it up and just go up to another level and execute, not make any more dumb penalties or anything like that, take care of the ball, not forcing the ball downfield — just executing like we know we can."
Said Wilson, "We've got to keep plugging along, and sooner or later it's got to transfer into some game success on Saturdays."

Do you not remember your recent OU coaching history? OU and the State of Oklahoma are lucky to have Bob Stoops. He is still Big Game Bob... geesh.

No kidding, tulsaGuy. We're still VERY lucky to have Bob Stoops, and most OU fans are well-aware of that fact.

I with both of you all. i mean look at what we had before stoops. Blake was nothing and then the one i dont want to mention before him i mean i am blessed to have stoops as a coach. So what if we are 3-3 its his first bad season since his first. He still is big game bob and always will be. All we need is a lil SOONER MAGIC To show and we will be fine

I get so sick of hearing this kind of junk. I agree with the above posters - REAL Sooner fans know that not everyone can win every game. We are da*mned proud that he wins as many Big 12 Championships, etc. and gets us to the big game as much as he can. I have nightmares thinking about the coaches from the recent past. Not everything is within Bob's control, or you KNOW we would win them all.

Nobody human is worthy of blind faith. His recent bowl game record shows that there are areas where he can improve and I'm sure that he will continue to do so.

Big time Bob can,t win big time games. The last 4 years in the bcs bowls he is 0-4..it might be 0-5. So what if he wins the big 12 often, big 12 only has 2 power house teams ..texas and ou so thats not saying much winning the big 12. Texas has ous, number now after going 4 wins out of 5 trys now.
In belam this year my team is going to win..yes,,that be o.s.u. Give them a couple of more years and they will be the power house in the big 12.

He is still big game Bob. Bob returned OU to its proud tradition ways of winning and did it quickly. Most importantly, he did it with integrity. Did every game have a fake punt or fake field goal or another trick play? No. Were all his wins a result of Sooner Magic? No, his wins came from setting high standards for the players, preparation, and hard work. Will he win every game? No, I do not expect him to. I expect him to have the Sooners ready to play to the best of their ability every week and to never give up. To date, I believe the Sooners have given up in a game only one time-the national title game against USC. This year, the season has been disappointing; but keep in mind, the Sooners have lost 3 games by a grand total of 5 points and all three opponents are ranked and two are ranked in the top 10.

The only problem I see with Stoops is that he does the same a 99.9% of coaches do. Has a #1 QB and very rarely goes to the #2 QB, when #1 gets hurt, #2 comes in and cant move the ball for positive yardage to save his life. If Bradford had not got hurt, Jones would not be getting the valuable game situation experience he needs before he takes over the #1 spot. When you have a team beaten by 20+ points, put #2 in and tell the "D" to keep doing their job or they will get replaced.

Stoops was dubbed "Big Game Bob" by the media because of 1 instance 10 years ago. Nothing has changed in his agressiveness as a coach (i.e. going for 4th downs/fake punts/etc...) Just the media tring to stir the pot to sell papers!
Jay - OUs problem is not with the QB it is with the o-line, receivers that can't catch and penaltie but I agree that Stoops needs to get the starters out after halftime with a 20+ point lead. Coach Gundy pulls most of the startes out fairly early when they have big leads.

Your gooner fans are what give true Sooner fans a bad name. IMO the gooner fans are probably your fair weather fans. True Sooner fans recognize that not only do you have a quality program but that there are other quality programs and opponents in the nation. The gooner fans are the ones that think OU is the only team in the nation and if you question them why they think this their only reply is your team sux!

Prattville you have the mentality of Ohio State Fans - when John Cooper was coach there - he did a fine job except for the fact that he could not beat Michigan, so exit Cooper and enter Tressel. OSU and OU have some remarkable similarities in that they have winning season get to great bowl games and a couple of NC games - but fail to win most. But they have beaten Michigan the last 4 - 5 years. So what do you want a coach that at least gets you a great season and a great bowl game - or one that beats your hated opponent? We would all like to go all the way every year - but face it there are other quality teams our there that want the same accomplishments.

I agree with Gene M. I think OU should sell the Administration Building and a few dorms , net 10 million or so and give it to Bob at a ceremony where all the faculty and student body bow down before him. I also believe the college should be renamed Stoops University, the town, Stoopsville, and the State, Stoopsatonia. All out of wedlock children should be named Bob or Bobbie and anyone who isn't a Stoops fan should be put to death. Whew, that wore me out.

I hate to keep beating the drum, but Venables became the defensive coordinator in 2004 and Wilson became the offensive coordinator in 2005. Some may say that Bob is the main reason, but no one can deny that the defenses and offenses were better under the previous coordinators. Stoops needs to get rid of them.

OU has won the BIG 12 six times in the past nine years including 3 times in a row. OU has played for the National Championship 4 times and have won it once since Bob Stoops took over. OU has beaten Texas 6 times in the past 10 years. I guess Bob's nickname should be "what have you done for me lately Stoops". I guess every team should be winning as much as OU does and should be winning every BCS game they play in. I don't see other teams from the BIG 12 having as much success as OU. What is OSU's record over the past 10 years? What is Texas' record or Nebraska's? I don't see any teams from the BIG 10, ACC,or BIG East doing as well as OU. With the excpetion of USC, where are the PAC 10 teams that can compete with OU. With the exception of Florida and LSU, where is the SEC?
I would like to see OU win every game every year like any other loyal OU fan. I want to see a new year added to the press box like anybody else. However, that doesn't happen every year and it isn't easy anymore. They limit scholorships to schools and teams can no longer stock pile players. Injuries play a bigger role these days because you can only have so many players.
I have confidence that OU will compete for another BIG 12 championship and another National Championship soon. I know we will beat Texas and I know we will win another bowl game soon.
Every school has off years. Every conference has teams that rise and fall. College football changes every year due to graduating players and others leaving early for the NFL. This year texas is up while OU is down. Next year it might be Nebraska, OU, or Colorado. As long as OU is competitive, and doesn't quit, I can accept losses. We lost 3 games this year, on the road, by 5 points, to ranked teams, and without Bradford. No excuses, but the facts speak for themselves.
I will now sit back and wait for all the OSU fans and fair-wether OU fans to blast Stoops and call for his resignation. Enjoy this year because OU is rarely 3-3, unlike other programs.
