OU shows signs of becoming complete team
OU coach Bob Stoops was happy with his team's performance Saturday. MIKE SIMONS / Tulsa World

NORMAN — Maybe the biggest mistruth in the coachspeak dictionary is defense wins championships.
Wrong.
Defense gives you a chance, but it guarantees nothing if you have less than a complete team.
Evidence: Oklahoma entered Halloween ranked second nationally in scoring defense (10.14 points allowed per game) and had three losses to show for it. The Sooners were on pace to become the first collegiate team since Arizona in 1992 to give up fewer than 11 points per game and absorb three or more defeats. (Somehow, Arizona allowed 8.9 points per game in '92 and managed to finish with a sterling record of 6-5-1.)
Obviously, Oklahoma has been less than a complete team for much of this season. It's easy to be incomplete when Sam Bradford and Jermaine Gresham are on the sideline and the blockers and receivers surrounding Bradford's replacement and Gresham's replacement are not the same fellows who helped the Sooners produce more points than any team in college football history last season.
As a result, OU has been just good enough to get beat, losing three games by five points.
So, what happens when the defense finally has an off night?
Do you get a lopsided loss instead of a narrow defeat?
The defense finally had a bad day at the office Saturday night, giving up a season-high point total. And guess what occurred? A Landry Jones-led offense rode to the rescue, driving twice for fourth-quarter touchdowns to secure a 42-30 victory over Big 12 North Division leader Kansas State.
Bob Stoops was smiling afterward because OU survived adversity and emerged as a more complete team.
"I just said that in the locker room," Stoops said. "I said the most exciting part of tonight is the way the offense answered back when they had to. That reminded me of some teams we have had here in the past several years. It showed a lot of character. That's a great sign that we are becoming a more complete team."
OU's defense allowed just eight touchdowns in the first seven games of the season. It looked like same song, next verse when the Sooners held Kansas State to 19 first-quarter yards.
Then the Wildcats inexplicably became unstoppable. They scored on four consecutive drives (three touchdowns, one field goal) to get within five points and, following an OU touchdown, got a kickoff return for a score to draw within five again.
With the game in jeopardy, OU's offense — limited to a total of six fourth-quarter points in losses to BYU, Miami and Texas — needed to finally show up at crunch time. It's more than fair to say that occurred. Jones hit his last 14 passes (he was 10-of-10 in the fourth quarter) and Stoops can still say he has never lost a regular-season game to his former boss, Bill Snyder.
"The tempo was great out there," running back DeMarco Murray said after a 458-yard night by the Sooner offense. "We just had a combination of running and passing. I think that's what helped us out a lot. They didn't know what we were doing. When we would play-action, there were times when Landry had a lot of receivers open."
Oklahoma scored its most points against a Big 12 opponent this season, including 21 in the first 11 minutes. OU fans probably would have preferred a rout instead of what actually transpired. But the way the game played out allowed the Sooners to learn they perhaps aren't as incomplete as they are alleged to be.
"All season long our defense has been holding up when we haven't been able to put points on the board," Murray said. "They have been stopping their opponents and giving us opportunity after opportunity, so today we had their back. They got a little rattled and whatnot, but we were able to keep scoring."

I'll take the win, but that wasn't close to proving that we have a "complete" team. We still don't have a pass-catching tight end. The offensive line still loses too many battles on both running and passing plays. The coaching staff continues to play too conservatively at the beginning of the second half. There are still too many penalties. It was a good thing that they woke up in the fourth quarter and mixed up their play calls on both sides of the ball.

1st and 4th quarter's were great, but we are being outcoached at half time. Would love to see OU come out after halftime and play with passion and fire instead of being conservative and allowing the other team to control the third quarter. 4th quarter they showed a lot of character overcomein 4th and 45 and scoring twice to win the game. Landry Jones keeps getting better an better, gonna be tuff to beat the next couple of years. Boomer Sooner

Just a tad premature to catgorize this squad as a complete team, even close to a complete team would be a stretch. Just past mid season one would like to say this but there are just too many mental lapses, busted assignments and inabilities to perform at a high level consistently. Don't forget who they were playing last Saturday, recovery was good, stepped possibly in the right direction but it wasn't against a ranked SEC or PAC-10 team. Probably two years away from that level. Don't agree with that; watch some tape from the USC-Oregon game, over all game speed and the ability to hit with intensity prevailed. Can OU recruit a highly athletic, non statuesque QB, when the pocket collapses options are nice? Let's see what happens against TT and OSU...

egl, OU doesn't recruit dual threat quarterbacks. Try doing some more research.

Research completed years ago and that is why I suggested, "Can OU recruit a non statuesque QB." Try reading the post, K.

Anybody who does not like the quarterbacks that Stoops & company recruit is an Aggie or a dimwit.

Oregon? They play in the Pac-10, remember? They were exposed at Boise. USC is not that good as we've seen by watching parts of most of their games this year. I'll refer you back to picasso's comment regarding OU QBs.

AtlantaSooner-I certainly am a big fan of the recruits that OU brings in at QB & all positions for that matter. Remove chip, sit down and re-read the original post your giving the Sooner Nation a bad reputation. Simply asked a question, "Can OU recruit a non statuesque QB." The game is ever evolving and the throwing "telephone pole" employed at the college level is not functional, in fact it's career limiting, unless some semblence of a running game exist, I'll let you do the math on that one. Aggies-dimwits, come on AtlantaSooner you can do better than that, you've had an extra hour today and thats your best response.
Steff M-
I certainly am aware of Oregon's conference affiliation, if you fully read my original post you can see I even provided you that solution, now as an unbiased fan of pure athletes go watch the tape from the USC-Oregon game without the crimson/creme goggles.
I will ask once again:
"Can OU recruit a non statuesque QB."

Jason White was actually a scrambling QB when he was recruited. Early on I remember he had almost 100 rush yard game. Of course, injuries happen and he transitioned into a pocket QB. I think Stoops does fine in recruiting. The players have won individual awards at almost all position. Actually Gresham should have won the TE award last year. It's just hard putting all the pieces together at the same time. If you take last years offense and this years defense OU would have won the NCG undefeated.

There are gems of wisdom in this thread. The spread is beginning to fray, as six d-backs and rush ends solve it regularly. Having a q-back who can run 6-8 times a game is very important. But the OU coaching staff is not an innovative staff. We will come around, as we always do, very late in the game.

I have a good feeling about L. Jones. He has lots of maturing to do as a quarterback but his potential is limitless. Could be better than Bradford. Can't wait to find out over the next couple of seasons.

"Your giving the Sooner Nation a bad reputation", egl??? I thought you were VERY intelligent with your lines like "the ability to hit with intensity", but then you disappoint me with improper word usage. You sounded like you had everything all figured out. How can I put any faith in your opinion now? Oh wait, I never did. Cute little sign off you got there, too.

Geez, you're wearing me out. I was working on a rap song and I had nation and reputation rhyming with a gangsta twist, situation and constipation didn't work well, I thought it sounded good at the time. I won't dare ask that QB question again and I'll try to change my signature sign off, you win this week Steff M.

Actually you stole Al Eschbach's goodbye to callers. Maybe you're listening to too much Sports Animal and not enough gangsta rap.
