Sooners claw back, finish off Wildcats
OU rushes to 21-0 lead; K-State narrows gap to five before Sooners soar.
OU quarterback Landry Jones threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns against Kansas State on Saturday in Norman. MIKE SIMONS/Tulsa World

NORMAN — This time, Oklahoma got off the mat. Twice.
The Sooners raced to a 21-point lead, endured a Kansas State rally, then pulled away with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns for a 42-30 victory before a crowd of 84,021 on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
"I said in the locker room, the most exciting part of the night was the way the offense answered back when they had to," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. "That reminded me a lot of some teams we've had the last couple years here, showing some character."
No. 22 OU started fast and looked slick in taking a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. But the Sooners (5-3 overall, 3-1 Big 12 Conference) were weakened by repeated Wildcat body blows in the second and third quarters as K-State (5-4, 3-2) got within 28-23.
That's when OU responded.
Quarterback Landry Jones constructed a season-best 15-play drive that ate up nearly eight minutes and gave the Sooners a 35-23 lead with 11:18 to play.
Then Kansas State got it right back when Brandon Banks ran the kickoff back 98 yards, making it 35-30.
So Jones commanded another epic voyage, this time 68 yards in 11 plays, that swelled OU's lead to 42-30.
Game over. Oklahoma extends its school-record and national-best home winning streak to 28.
"Those were two big drives for us," Jones said. "They score and our offense comes out and gets two touchdowns. Those were huge."
On the two drives, Jones completed 14-of-14 passes for 172 yards. He finished the day 26-of-37 for 294 yards and four touchdown passes.
"The young guy's done an awesome job," Stoops said. "He's just very poised. Trusts his guys around him. He'll get better, too."
Jones' trust was never more evident than the start of the fourth quarter, when he had seemingly just thrown a 38-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Broyles. But the score was nullified by a holding penalty, and the Sooners were pushed back by a celebration penalty against Broyles. After the back-to-back penalties, OU faced a first-and-45.
On second-and-42, the first play of the fourth quarter, Jones dumped a short pass to the left to DeMarco Murray, who cut upfield and ran through traffic for an 18-yard gain. On third-and-24, Jones dumped a short pass to the right to Broyles, who cut inside, then sprinted outside, stiff-armed a tackler, cut upfield, avoided the sideline and got the first down.
"Just check it down and let your playmakers make the plays," Jones said.
The Sooners scored five plays later for a 35-23 lead.
"To overcome a first and forever, really excited about Landry and our overall execution there to overcome it," Stoops said.
Broyles finished with eight catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
"He's just a playmaker," Jones said.
After Banks' runback closed the gap, Jones found Adron Tennell for 20 yards, then hooked up twice with Dejuan Miller (who finished with a career-best nine catches, 94 yards and his first TD). Murray's third touchdown, a 3-yard run, made it 42-30 with 6:27 to go, and the Sooner defense — pushed around a bit by a physical K-State rushing attack — allowed just two first downs the rest of the way.
On the two key possessions, the Sooners converted 6-of-6 third downs, including a third-and-10 Jones-to-Tennell hookup.
"It was good for us to be on top in the fourth quarter and pull away," Murray said. "Complete the challenge."
Murray and Chris Brown combined for 145 rushing yards, and Tennell caught four passes for 62 yards.
K-State running back Daniel Thomas gained 88 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Grant Gregory netted 46 while scatback Keithen Valentine scored two touchdowns. The mercurial Banks accounted for 156 yards receiving and 195 on kick returns.
OU led 21-0 on three quick TD passes by Jones, but K-State strung together four straight scoring drives.
After three possessions, OU had 158 total yards, while the Wildcats had minus-10. But prior to the Sooners' two long drives in the second half, K-State had 300 yards and the Sooners just 255.
But with the game on the line, the Sooners seemed to grow up.
"It's a sign that (growing up) is it's on its way," Stoops said. "It needs to continue. They're a long way from being where they need to be. But they're progressing and making improvement.
"With all that we've gone through offensively through the year, with personnel changes ... It was really just a positive game that way."

Tonight's game looked like a blowout, until OU let KSU back in the game. I liked the comback OU made late in the game.
Go Sooners, beat OSU.

Amazing how 3 losses lowers team expectations. Coach Bob and then Grandpas Bob Barry and Merv on radio were sounding chipper about how well the offense came back.
There was a unreal happiness on converting a 1st and 45. They all glossed over that sloppy play, stupid penalties and bad physical mechanics made the OU offensive line a bad joke once again.
OU hammered K-State in the first 5 minutes and then fooled around and let them back in the game. The defense looked clueless at times and pretty much let K-State do what they wanted. I got the impression a few times that the defense had given up.
The Sooners won almost in spite of themselves. They found new ways to shoot themselves in the foot when they were on the edge of blowing the Mildcats out of the stadium.
It is obvious to me that Sooner Magic has been replaced by Sooner dumb luck. This game is a "W" even though you have to hold your nose to avoid the smell.

Apparently you haven't watched much college football this year, surfin. Most will take any win they can get and be happy with it. It's not like we're that concerned with style points in our current situation. Win out. Win the bowl game. Finish in top 8 or 10 and reload for next year.

42-30 is "dumb luck"? I guess OU just went out there scratching their helmets in cluelessness, the whole game, and somehow won.

How in the world do you get a "delay of game" penalty first and goal from the 1? Come on Wilson....get your act together. How hard is it to call a QB-sneak or a power isolation???

gba, the score shows that the game WAS pretty close, at least in the 2nd half, and I think you got us confused with OSWho on the below avg. seasons and the maybe next year thing. Also, lackluster is one word and you don't "loose" a game, you LOSE it. It's the root word for LOSER, a word I'm guessing you're very familiar with.

I've watched a LOT of college football this year and this team for more years than most of the posters here have been alive. Style points? Let me understand, you have them down 21-0 and have to scramble with 2 touchdowns late to win the game? K-State won the 2nd half 21-14. Style points? OU has rarely looked so sloppy in the Stoops era.
OU had 8 penalties for 85 yards. The reason no one could remember picking up a 1st and 45 is because ITS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE in OU history. Prior teams never put themselves in that position. Not even John Blake's teams.
And yeah, 25 years ago Sooner Magic existed, the ability to rise to the occasion and win big games and put away opponents you should beat. No one who remembers Sooner Magic will admit the Sooners have it today. You can be happy with 42-30 but there was a time when that game last night would have ended 42-7. The Sooners accomplished their goal by winning, but the way they did it will never go down as a thing of beauty.
I'm down on the Sooners because I expect more. They have the talent and I think Stoops is a good head coach. I think the assistant coaches do not do a good job adequately preparing these guys for games and I don't see that swagger that used to beat down other teams.
If that is negative, then I plead guilty.

I thought that the Sooners played another lackluster game. They were pretty fortunate to slide past the Wildcats, in my humble opinion. They are going to have to do much better than that, to reverse the trend of disappointing and embarrassing seasons over the last several years.

What will it take for the OU coaches to get these guys prepared to play a full 60 minutes every week? OU managed to win this game but they need to dominate for 4 quarters and not 1 in future games to win out. It was good to see Miller grab some catches.

In your "Report Card" you gave OU's offense a "B-". Let's see: 6 touchdowns; 5 of 5 red zone touchdowns; 10 of 13 conversions of third downs; no turnovers; 26 of 37 passing (70% completion ratio); and 458 total yards!!
Yep, that sure sounds like a barely passing grade!! By the way, what would the stats need to be for you to give a "B" or "B+", let alone an "A"?
For what its worth, my grade of your Report Card has been an "F" all season!! I am thankful The World has Guerin Emig to provide us some excellent writing and objective reporting on the Sooners!

i was at the game we looked good in the first half but the second half our D lost it we should have blown K state out but we didnt bc of our D. Kevin Wilson is not that smart its 1 and 45 and we run the ball come on a good Offensive coach would not do somthing stupid like that. We need to pass the ball more screw running the ball we can throw so throw the ball.

I agree with you to a certain extent mike, but DeMarco Murray looked like a small AD on many runs. Hard not to want to give him the ball when he's running over people or dragging defenders behind him.
