Storm of losses hurt Hurricane's future

Tulsa has been to four consecutive bowl games, but a fifth may be in jeopardy.

TU has to scratch two wins in its final four games against No. 13 Houston, East Carolina, Southern Miss and Memphis.

Encouragement may not be there following Saturday's homecoming 27-13 loss to SMU, but the team won't give up.

"The same thing that we need to do to get back on the winning track is the same thing that will get us into a bowl game," Tulsa's Un'Tavious Scott said. "All we have to do is come back and refocus, pull together..."

How did it get to this point? A weak early schedule and inexperience was clear.

Todd Graham's biggest chore isn't just getting the team ready for Saturday's home game against Houston. It will be keeping the team together as one.

CBS called and cancelled the telecast as a service to the TU fans.

The truth is bringing Gus back won't help (people are already catching up to his Hurry Up no Huddle) faster than they caught on to the Fly-Sweep. Schools that started using a form of it (including OU)are already starting to abandoning it.

Next,.TU has a GREAT Coaching Staff, it's just they are coaching out of their areas of expertise. IF Norvell & Blankenship were Offensive Cord. its likely the only game TU would have lost is to OU. This is not saying anything bad about anybody,.they truly have GREAT COACHES & GOOD MEN ON THAT STAFF,.. its just they are out of their areas of coaching.

Last,..again, I'm saying anything bad about anybody it's just IF Norvell & Blankenship were Coaching the Offense, Bower would be the starting QB. Clay would be back playing his old position (CLAY is NOT a RB) even the "Sports Animal" stated he plays better in space,...and Sect#104 would not be yelling out the Red Zone Wild Cat plays. Graham is just too good of a coach not to correct this.
If you will listen to The Sports Animal today you will hear them saying the exact same thing I'm saying now.

Timber land makes good points and I agree with everyone except. I do not believe the Head Coach is objective enough to realize what to do to correct the slide. His pride and stubborness prevails - but I hope he is wrong. Bill Blankenship can indeed call the plays much better than any coach on the team. Bower needs to be the QB, Clay needs to be a H-Back - the wild cat is way to predictable. Graham needs to wake up or he end up coaching at NEO A&M.

Timber land and GoldenDriller1, thank you for repeating what I have been saying for weeks. Coach Blankenship needs to take over the offense. I have stated that on here at least two times (other places several times) I'm glad others are now seeing the changes that need to be made. Unfortunately, I don't know if Coach Graham will set aside his stubborness and see the same changes need to be made.

Wow, what a tough game on Saturday. I have defended these coaches previously and still will, but any criticism is warranted at this point. Here are a few things that became obvious to me on Saturday:

1) Bower should be the QB. Although I love Kinne's fight and determination, I have been saying all along he is part of the problem. 3 sacks in the first qtr officially(I actually counted 5) while Kinne was in the game. Zero while Bower was in the game. While Bower was not tremendously successful, he did put the ball in the air and allow his playmakers to make plays.

2) Charlie O needs more carries. Every time he touches the ball he seems to have more explosiveness and gets more YAC.

3) Beaver should not be in the game at all. He is no threat to throw and causes the Offense to lose it's rhythm when he comes in.

4) They need to have a plan offensively. Throwing deep every play makes it difficult to sustain drives and protect the passer. Shorter routes and quicker throws make it easier to convert on 3rd down. TU was 3-15 on 3rd down Saturday.

The coaching staff is talented and will adjust. I just hope they will look in the mirror and make the difficult decisions that will help them be successful.

Ignatz, A nice place where Democrats hold every office in the County. (11/2/2009 9:24:49 AM)
TU doesn't throw button-hooks, sideline, many slant passes, passes to tight end over the middle, etc. Watching other teams get needed yardage for first downs on these types of plays underscore lousy offensive play-book.Apparently there are only four running plays with the usual high school sweeps and end arounds that fool no one. Watching TU try to connect on passes to a wideout behind the line of scrimmage brought back visions of Dave Rader. That play never works. Horrible...won't win another game and if debacle continues next year Graham will just be a memory.

But What Do I Know?, (11/2/2009 11:07:40 AM)
Looked to me like there was a hangover from the UTEP collapse.

And it also began to look like a team divided, and that's the biggest problem any team can have.

Timber Land, if that is you shouting obscenities behind me in 104 I'm going to punch you in the mouth and then have security drag you away you drunk.

Second...TU coaches need to watch lots of film from last year and get a bead on the offensive flow when Malzahn was calling plays. Tempo needs to be quicker. Even if it is a run play that nets 2 yards, it makes the defense winded and confused. The plays that worked the previous 2 years can work, but it is the flow and context of the game that are missing. Where are the RB screens? Where is the shovel pass? Where's Clay on a wheel route matched up against a LB with no chance of covering him? These are all things that worked in the past and will work again. Everyone knows with a weak offensive line, QBs need to take shorter drops, quick hitting passes, run some screens and shovels to keep the defense honest. Right now they are tee-ing off on the QB (which needs to be Bower). If GJ Kinne had a concussion in the 1st quarter was replaced by an effective Bower, then why in the world was Kinne in the game for the 2nd possession of the 2nd half (which resulted in a very costly turnover)?

Upsetting / paying back Houston would go a long ways to TU righting their season.

But even my wife knows that losing to Southern Methodist is bad, really really bad.

I think this summed up what TU fans see as a big part of the problem.

"Todd Graham Resume:
As a Player:
Defensive Back - East Central Univ.

As a Coach:
LB Coach (WV)
Co-Def. Coord (WV)
Def Coord (TU)
HC Rice (known he helped with the D)
HC Tulsa (same as Rice, helped with D) 2007-2008
HC Tulsa (QB Coach, REAL O-coord)
Hmmmmmmmmm.....One of these things is not like the others."

The other funny thing is that there are some that have started calling Graham "The Ego", and it fits.

Wow. How does everyone realize the problem is play calling and quarterback play. To "the ego" play to your strength. Get that defense nasty. Good coaches understand their strengths and weaknesses. Pete Carroll does almost nothing with the offense at USC. Steve Spurrier almost nothing with the defense at South Carolina. I think we are all in agreement that they have been pretty successful focusing on what they do best. Houston will MAUL us without Bower at QB.
