TU quarterbacks feeling pressure

Jacob Bower, left, and G.J. Kinne

THE BAR has been set high for Tulsa quarterbacks.

Paul Smith and David Johnson engineered the nation's top offenses in the past two seasons. In year three, the offense hasn't run as smoothly under starting quarterback G.J. Kinne.

Tulsa is in the midst of a three-game losing streak and, with Saturday's Conference USA showdown against No. 13 Houston looming, criticism is flying. The quarterback spot has been directly targeted.

Todd Graham said the high expectations of playing quarterback at TU brought Kinne, Jacob Bower and Shavodrick Beaver to the program.

"I'm glad we have some high standards here," Graham said. "Some of the things that people shout at G.J. from the stands, I'm glad that they care and glad they want to win and expect to win.

"We're expected to put up numbers and expected to win. When you don't, you're going to face a lot of ridicule. We've brought it on ourselves because we haven't performed to the level that we need to."

Fans seemed impressed with Bower during last Saturday's 27-13 loss to SMU. The junior stepped off the bench, completing 9-of-22 passes for 206 yards and guiding two touchdown drives.

Bower also has received nearly 80 percent of the votes in a Tulsa World internet poll asking who should be the Tulsa starter.

Graham has already picked his starter, and will stay with Kinne. The quarterback suffered a concussion on the third play of the SMU loss. He's being watched closely this week and continues to practice with
the first-team offense.

Graham said there isn't a quarterback controversy. Offensive coordinator Herb Hand agrees.

"Jacob is an unbelievable team player and we're very excited to have him," Hand said. "He was in a similar role last year with Dave, and was always prepared and always ready, and this year is the same thing.

"Right now, we're in the preparation mode. We have to prepare to win. We're not going to go through a quarterback competition. We've already had our quarterback competition. And now we're in preparation mode and we have to get those guys prepared, and Jacob's prepared just like G.J. is."

Graham remains confident in his quarterbacks and continues to point to a young offensive line that's dealt with injuries to key players.

Still, criticism is fired on the quarterbacks.

How do they deal with that? Just ask one of the school's most prolific passers, who also dealt with a three-game losing streak during 2006.

"Once you get to this level as a quarterback, you truly understand that you will be praised deservedly and undeservedly and criticized deservedly and undeservedly," said Smith, C-USA's offensive player of the year as a senior.

"It can be tough. If you've made it to this level in college, it means that you've had a successful career. A lot of times, this is the first time you have faced this situation."

Kinne was dazed in that SMU contest. But he did hear the boos coming from disappointed fans in Chapman Stadium.

Bower said he is a team player and is practicing hard each day.

"I'm preparing like I'm the starter, just in case I have to go in," Bower said.

It was Bower's most significant playing time with the Hurricane. Originally a BYU signee, he played one full season at Bakersfield Community College.

While Bower would like to play more, he's staying positive for the football team.

"We're teammates. You can't be selfish," Bower said. "Whatever happens is out of your control. You have to be positive and help each other out and cheer for each other, no matter what happens."

Losing can be tough for any football team and leadership is important, especially from the quarterback spot.

Smith said he learned one important lesson from his predecessor James Kilian.

"You want the team to understand that you can handle the highs and the lows," Smith said. "If you can do that, they'll never doubt you."

Breaking down the QBs

G.J. Kinne

Positives: Ball security has been solid, with only four interceptions this season ... Ability to run has been effective, especially early in the season ... Sells play-action extremely well.

Negatives: Needs to handle pressure more effectively ... At times, holds ball too long and doesn’t make it to his third read and checkdowns.

Jacob Bower

Positives: Stands tall in the pocket and willing to take a hit ... Has one full junior college season of experience against solid opposition ... Possesses strong arm.

Negatives: Needs more repetitions against Division I opponents ... Footwork could use improvement, but could come with more playing time.

Shavodrick Beaver

Positives: Amazing athlete who can make things happen with his feet ... Forces defenses to focus on him when at Wildcat quarterback or lined up at wide receiver.

Negatives: Needs to grasp playbook ... Part of his runs come off broken plays ...Just needs confidence and swagger on the field.

What's with the mini Bower picture? Is that some sort of subliminal message?

I know. I was just trying to make fun of the very first picture that was posted on the pg (it's since been reframed and corrected) that showed an unframed mininature Bower. It looked like a gnat-sized QB icon.

A negative missed for Kinne is that up to this year,he has not taken a snap in a game since his high school days - 3 seasons ago.

Tulsa97....vs. SMU. Kinne had 2 sacks in very limited playing time. With the SAME OL, Bower had zero. Yes, OL is partially to blame, but that stat right there says a lot.

KY - it's not a subliminal message. You may notice on other articles that each article that has more than one picture has one that is larger, then the others shown are thumbnails. The current line has Tulsa favored by 1 1/2. I'm digging through my desk drawer looking for my home equity credit line checks......

EVERYONE thinks they know better than the coach! I love Bower as much as anyone, BUT have you ever thought coach Graham is saying Kinne will start so Houston prepares for him but Bower gets the nod. C'mon people college football is a strategy. Whoever takes the snaps on Saturday will be the right one from Grahams experience.

Can't believe that Herb has to spout the company line like that. Anyone in the stadium saw that Bower was the better QB that day regardless of the concussion Kinne suffered. In the limited action that he saw he looked better than Kinne has looked all season. Kinne is a great kid but Bower should be playing.

I am mystified (after what I saw last week) why the Coach continues to blame our young O-line for not being able to protect You-know-who?

So what's the deal with Beaver? Is he another over hyped recruit, a la Bobby Reid? Or does he really have the talent that ranked him as one of the best HS QB's in the country? True freshman or not, can he play at the D1 level? If he has D1 talent and is the TU QB of the future does it make sense to play him now? Is this "season over" and he should be getting game experience this year to prepare for next season? Will he feel like Kinne did at UT playing behind McCoy, and needs to transfer cause he sees 3 more years on the bench? Thoughts anyone?

I vote for Houston and Tulsa97 to be the new AD and Coach at TU. They are obviously way smarter than anyone over at 11th and Harvard. Tulsa97 has his masters in coaching and Houston must have too.

If I wasn't a TU fan, I would hope you two would get your wish so you could see just how silly your remarks are.

Well, this is not high school and I have watched him since last spring and he is clearly not ready and really shouldn't be on the field at all. I think he has the "potential" to be good but a redshirt would have served him well.

You may be right raiderjay and I hope you are. I'll believe it when I see it. At this point, all goals are likely lost. You may get your wish in a couple of games.

SO SAD....SO SAD....
LOOK AT THE SCANDAL IN OUR AREA HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS.....
SOOOOOOO
WHAT IS GOING ON AT TU?????????
WHAT IS UP WITH TU'S ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AND OTHER COACHES????????
I have seen most of the games, read all the articles and comments and it makes me wonder???
WHO IS REALLY IN CHARGE AND RUNNING TU'S ATHLETIC'S.....
It seems to me that Graham is being allowed to call all the shots, sit upstairs and watch/coach or walk the sideline screaming and yelling on national TV.....
1. Where is the AD?????????
2. Who is going to pull Graham in and set him straight?
3. Why are the other coaches not coaching?
It's not the kids/players, or the school, or the facilities, or the other coaches...

It's Graham gone wild and he is being allowed to run everything into the ground this season. I don't care about his pay check or contract he still needs to be held accountable for what he is doing/not doing...

WAKE UP TU....BEFORE WE ARE SCREWED AGAIN

CAN I GET A "WAHOO" AND AN "AMEN" FOR THE ABOVE TULSA97......

This is exactly what I was saying....
TU is a great school, excellent academic standards, has overall good leadership, great facilities, great students/kids

WITH THE ABOVE SAID.....

Don't screw up (AD) the athletic's at this school with a "GRAHAM GONE WILD" attitude...

AD...There is nothing wrong with saying..."I may have not made a mistake in bringing Graham on board BUT I have made a mistake in allowing him to much power/control".....

AD....Take back control a little bit, get the other talented coaches involved in coaching....Let these talented kids/students be allowed to be coached and not yelled at and confused...They are not paid to play and they work there XXXX off...The coaches are paid to coach....
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Coaches....GET YOUR XXXX TOGETHER...AND I MEAN WORK TOGETHER FOR THE KIDS/STUDENTS/PLAYERS......

I think the QB break down on Beaver is absolutely wrong. One only needs to watch his H.S. game against Sulphur Springs the eventual TX 4A state champs.(Aired on ESPN). He was one of the top H.S "QUARTERBACKS" in the nation(#21)and #8 dual threat. Michigan didnt recruit him to be a wildcat "QB". He is more than what TU is using him for. One TU coach committed, "Beaver was one of the most well coached players he had come across." That coach is respected throughout Tulsa and the state for OK football. Now of course his runs are coming from broken plays, because they are all designed runs. He is a QUARTERBACK. No coach at any level to include college level coaches have ever said Beaver had problems grasping the playbook info. Part of the problem at TU was no QB coach was hired until Aug and he was a grad assistant. Coach Graham said that they were trying to get Beaver on the field but he was making too many mistakes. Its hard to make mistakes running the football. Freshman are suppose to make some mistakes. Now how good is Michigan's freshman quarterbacks going to be next year with the playing experience they received this year. Their Record(5-4) TU's record(4-4). How soon did we forget the spring game. He definitely had the best game of the three, but his long TD run was minimized to a broken play. He still accounted for 4 of TU's 8 scoring drives in that game. Just a spring game, but if you look at the other two Quarterback's play their tendencies in that game have shown up during the season(SACKS and misfires). This kid can flat throw the ball if given the chance. 3 or 4 pass attempts that's ridiculous. If TU fans really want to know what type of Quarterback Beaver is watch his last H.S football game against the eventual TX state semi-finalist(Denton Guyer). He played the last half with a dislocated shoulder. He threw two touchdowns that won the game. Some in TX say it was the most inspiring game they had ever seen. He is not a running Quarterback. Hard to run with a dislocated shoulder. That game is available through Wichita Falls Time Warner. TU is missing possible greatness at that position.

Hopefully Beaver gets a shoot before the entire season is lost to show his worth. Maybe he will even get the chance to throw the football. Can't do any worse than what's happening now. If TU losses two more games he desires a honest look.

I think Coach Hand has a game plan that can be successful with the current personnel on hand. But it may be the spread offense that resembles W. Va or Coach Rod's spread offense as opposed to Coach Malzahn's spread. Coach Malzahn was the architect for TU's past offenses. Coach Hand can be the designer for TU's future offense. He has that kind of talent and he learned from a spread offense guru.

hawkdaddy, I've watched him since the spring of 09 as well. In the only real live action as a QB he definitely preformed well.(Spring Game 09) Practices are more productive when there is a true QB coach on the field. His play also has been limited to runs. Hard to make a evaluation with those limitations. Had he gone to Michigan he would be playing. Both their freshman QBs are playing to include the recruit some said was an inaccurate passer. Could that be coaching? Finally more than "Potential" gets you recruited as a Qb by almost every D-1 school in the nation. Doesn't TU have a QB that was recruited else where as a LB? If TU doesnt become bowl eligible maybe we will see some "potential".
