OU's collapse a team effort
Sooners' interceptions, missed field goals and penalties play roles in loss
Landry Jones, throwing past Nebraska's Jared Crick, threw four interceptions in Nebraska territory. Stephen Pingry/Tulsa World

LINCOLN, Neb. — It wasn't just Landry Jones' interceptions, Tress Way's missed field goals or all of those penalties on Oklahoma's offensive linemen. When you run plays on your opponent's half of the field on 11 of your 16 possessions and finish with three points, everyone has a hand in a total breakdown.
This was the Sooners during their 10-3 loss at Nebraska on Saturday.
Yes, Way went 1-for-4 in his first real effort as OU's placekicker. But the Sooners don't try two of those field goals if Adron Tennell doesn't drop a tipped pass or Trent Williams doesn't false start before a fourth-and-1 play.
Yes, Jones was a mistake waiting to happen with four of his five interceptions thrown in Nebraska territory. But consider number four, on OU's second-to-last series. He rolled out on fourth-and-4 from the Husker 33, toward a trio of wide receivers. None of them could work themselves open, however. Also, the line couldn't keep defensive tackle Jared Crick from bearing down and tipping the pass into an interception.
Yes, Williams committed a personal foul during a third-quarter drive that reached the Nebraska 20. But on fourth-and-1, the Sooners made the curious decision to pitch to DeMarco Murray wide right, with the tight end positioned on the left side of the O-line. Safety Eric Hagg made a beeline to the ball-carrier, and Murray lost 2 yards.
And while Jones sailed a fourth-and-7 slant way over the head of Tennell from the Nebraska 24, recall that two plays previously, Murray couldn't hang on to a short pass after his crossing pattern appeared to put him in open space. That helped undercut OU's third-to-last drive.
"They left some points out there," Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said, adding that he empathized for OU, given the nature of its losses this season.
OU has a right to feel a bit cursed, with four losses coming by a total of 12 points. Saturday though, the Sooners didn't have anyone to blame but themselves.
"They did the job they needed to," coach Bob Stoops said, "and we didn't."

Man, I'm getting sick of laying eggs on national television. Changes must be made.

You're right. That was one of the most pathetic "football" games I've ever seen, and if Stoops doesn't recognize that the offensive coaching stinks and should be re-evaluated, then he should be re-evaluated. with the talent they have, they should never be held to 3 points.

Same problems as week one: poor O line, receiver problems, and lack of big plays from the RBs. Murray is fluid, and Brown is reasonably quick, but neither is explosive or shifty. Both backs were tackled for losses by down lineman, and neither seemed to have the elusiveness to evade tacklers. OU needs to recruit a shiftier, quicker back that can operate from passing attack formations.

Why do you think Bradford got hurt? why is Jones shook up? Joe Montana would struggle behind this offensive line.

Until OU recruits an athletic, "pure athlete" style of QB they will be destined for this type of result. Opposing defenses enjoy teeing off on statuesque QB's that camp out in the pocket. Any statiticians on this page are welcome to do the math.

OU has Drew Allen at QB behind Landry. They are saving his eligibility. The real problem is the offensive line. Landry did not have time to throw; many balls were tipped by Nebraska. The running backs did not have holes to run through. How can one criticize Brown and Murray by saying they don't have elusiveness to evade tacklers. They have been tearing up opposing teams' defenses for some three years. It is the O-Line. Are the coaching supposed to be throwing the blocks?

I agree bruinsooner with all except your last remark. No, coaches don't throw the blocks, but they do find the players who will and teach them the technique to do it. They also develop blocking schemes that allow the o-lineman some advantages of leverage and blid-siding on d-linemen, like trap blocking and pulling linemen to seal of corners so your rb can get to the outside. The blocking scheme at OU is simple. Block the man that runs into you or block nobody at all.

Just shut your $@%&%@$^@& mouths, you hole-in-the-wall stay at home coaches! You don't have the slightest clue nor the answers to resolving OU's offensive issues. So no one is going to listen to you. Its not the fault of the coaches if these are the same coaches that led last year's record-setting offensive season. It is the players. Sure, I'd like to see a little more imagination with some trick gadget plays. But I dont believe for 1-second that any of the readers out there would've been able to dial up the correct plays either. Decision making on the field during live-ball is where the rubber-meets-the-road.

That was the worst OU game I've witnessed in the Stoops era. LANDRY is terrible and I'm sorry that I overrated him. He threw the ball on 2nd down with 30 seconds left like it was the end of the game? What an idiot. I love the SOONERS but if we don't finish 8-4 at least I'll have a hard time believing in STOOPS any more at all. All his teams do now is CHOKE, CHOKE, CHOKE. It's pathetic.

Can we quit crying over Sooner gridiron and start looking at Sooner hoops? I started when we lost to BYU. It should be obvious to you all by now that the football team may not win another title for a while. Until they do, can you at least show some love for Jeff Capel and the job he's doing. At least the B-Ball team HAS a shot at the national championship, unlike the football team.

sooner transplant, last time I checked this was a forum to give OPINIONS.
Also, I think Emig needs to watch the replay of the pass across the middle to Murray. The ball was low and behind him. Yeah, he COULD have caught it but that's more on Landry. Just another example of how much he was off last night.

Broyles and Murray stepped up. Miller proved he can be a factor. Kinney looked good when he got in when Tennel went out hurt. Nobdoy else on offense came to play. Having said that, you fairweather fans are morons!

Gooner wine. You got your Butts kicked plain and simple. No effective running or passing. And, it did not have to be much of a offensive output cause Nebraska offense was offensive also...but they did not turnover the ball. Looks like the "Toiler Bowl" is the only game left after this season...its making many Sooner fans sick already and running to the bathroom to puke.

3 points and 5 interceptions. Landry is not as good as Sam. Nobody is! Landry is a freshman. Hes got four more games of practice to get ready for next yr. He will be alot better next yr. Heck he'll be alot better next week, with no Dominator Suh running at him. Everybody was saying they wanted OU to throw the ball deeper. Well that doesn't work out so well when you dont have any time to throw the ball. Losing 10-3 is still alot better than getting beat 12-0 at home to Osu.

Landry is not as good as Sam, KG? Really? Thanks for the newsflash. I think some people are though. Most of them being in the NFL. I do agree that Landry will be "alot" (FYI that's not a word, see "a" and "lot") better next week as it would be hard to do much worse. Also, many of his poor throws were very short, easy, pitch and catch type looks under no pressure. He was just off. Way off. No pun intended.
