U-G-L-Y: Sooners look bad in loss

LINCOLN, Neb. — Once upon a time, the storied Oklahoma-Nebraska football series produced such monumental events as the 1971 Game of the Century.

Saturday night, the Sooners and the Cornhuskers combined to play the Ugly Game of the New Century. It was also one of the most unsightly contests in the 85-year history of a series that has often featured top-five teams fighting for a shot at the national championship.

There was only one ranked team in last night’s game at Memorial Stadium, and the No. 20 Sooners’ 10-3 loss was one of the most embarrassing performances in coach Bob Stoops’ tenure. It was the Sooners who produced the majority of unsightly plays as the three points were the least amount scored by a Stoops coached team.

“That was one of the most ugly games I’ve ever played in,” Husker quarterback Zac Lee said. But it feels good to win, no matter how ugly that may have been.”

How ugly was it? Nebraska led 7-3 at halftime even though the Huskers managed one first down the entire half. One!

The game’s only touchdown was set up by an interception that left the Huskers with first-and-goal on OU’s 1-yard line.

The Sooners’ sloppy offense didn’t just repeatedly shoot itself in the foot, it blew the danged thing clean off with five interceptions, three missed field goals and several drive-killing penalties.

It was supposed to be Nebraska, who competes in the Big 12 Conference’s woeful North Division, that was supposed to struggle against a team from the mighty South Division. After all, just three weeks ago, the Huskers (6-3, 3-2 Big 12) lost 9-7 at home to Iowa State while committing eight turnovers.

If Stoops learned anything in this disaster, it should be that he needs to send his assistants on an all-out search for junior college offensive linemen who can play immediately. And while the OU coaches are at it, they should also search high and low for a dependable field-goal kicker.

Nebraska’s vaunted defense lived up to its reputation when it exposed OU’s offensive line by dominating the Sooners when it counted. OU piled up the yards while repeatedly drive deep into Nebraska territory before being stopped and forced to attempt three Tress Way field goals, with none of them finding the mark.

Stoops has obviously give up on last season’s kicker, Jimmy Stevens, who was benched two weeks ago in a win at Kansas. Stoops stuck with Tress Way the entire game, and the redshirt freshman field goals from 46, 45 and 42 yards.

That victory over the Jayhawks, by the way, remains OU’s only win away from home this season as the Sooners’ record dropped to 5-4 and 3-2.

The OU coach can’t bench quarterback Landry Jones, whose toughest game as a Sooner was the result of constantly being harassed because the Sooners line couldn’t stop the relentless Husker defense. Jones, who had five passes intercepted, is the only scholarship quarterback with experience that OU has available.

The most pertinent and perplexing question facing OU is where do the Sooners go from here? They have now lost four games in a season for only the third time in Stoops’ 11 years.

About the only good news right in OU’s camp is that two of the final three games are at home against Texas A&M and Oklahoma State, with a road trip of to Texas Tech sandwiched between those two contests.

Based on what a raucous crowd and a split-national television audience witnessed last night, the Sooners would be wise to make sure they defeat Texas A&M (5-4, 2-3) Saturday, if they want to guarantee continuing Stoops’ streak of going to a bowl game after every season in his OU tenure.

OU has often struggled on trips to Texas Tech (6-3, 3-2). And even though the Bedlam contest will be on Owen Field, OSU (7-2, 4-1) has good reason to enter the contest supremely confident of victory.

If the Sooners lose to the Red Raiders and Pokes, they will desperately need to defeat the Aggies to gain the sixth win required to become eligible to play in the post season.

Would a 6-6 OU team even want to play in a bowl? It doesn’t matter, because the Big 12 bowl contracts will force the Sooners to continue this strange season even if they’d prefer to call it quits after Bedlam.

So a season that started with legitimate hopes of playing for the BCS national championship at the Rose Bowl, has dissolved into OU trying to win enough games to avoid playing in the Independence Bowl. That was the unattractive site of the first of Stoops’ 10 straight bowl appearances, and he undoubtedly would like to avoid a second visit in the last season the Big 12 has a contract with the lower-tier bowl in Shreveport, La.

The only real positive for OU in last night’s nightmare was the inspired play of a never-quit defense. The Sooners allowed only 180 total yards and seven first downs, and repeatedly gave the offense the ball in Husker territory. But that was expected against a Nebraska (6-3, 3-2) offense that had slumped so badly in its last three games that OU was a five-point favorite.

“It would be hard for our defense to play much better,” said Stoops, who pointed to OU’s “dumb penalties. We still had a lot (nine) of foolish penalties.”

Just a week ago, when the Sooners held off a determined second-half comeback against Kansas State, Stoops said he was excited because he saw “signs of becoming a complete team.”

He was optimistic because the offense had finally held up its end when the heretofore reliable defense surrendered 30 points to the Wildcats. Jones seemed to be coming into his own after throwing four touchdowns passes and being named the Big 12’s offensive player of the week.

Last night was a return to a season-long story of the offense failing to produce. It’s a problem the OU staff hasn’t figured out how to overcome after losing quarterback Sam Bradford and All-American tight end Jermaine Gresham.

Those other offensive struggles, however, didn’t come close to resembling OU’s bleak, eye-sore act against a Nebraska team that OU beat 62-28 last season.

There was one way to describe it — ugly.

No matter how you cut it, it is official, "we suck" and that is a fact. The bigger picture is why this has happened, why the talent bucket is so bare, and is this season, an indication of future seasons? That was a pathetic showing. Granted, Landry is a freshman QB but for all practical purposes, he has had an entire season under his belt. It is apparent that he is a bust. Bench him and take away his scholarship. He can transfer to SE Oklahoma State or the University of Southern North Dakota in Podunk. The entire offense is a bust. The defense is the only shining light. And to be honest, this team does not deserve a bowl game this year, even if we scrape out a 6-5 season. I would hate to see our players embarrassed by some third rate school like Ball State or someone like that.

I think that hopefully now (FINALLY), the apologist like Dave Sitler and company, understand that there is major problem at OU and has been for many years. Maybe it is time to fire Stoops and bring in someone else who can consistently bring in a winner, each and every year. In fact, at the end of the year, fire Stoops and most of the staff (keep Josh though) and rehire Switzer. Look a K-State and look at what NU did by rehiring Dr. Tom as AD. This way, we can see the storied program right itself. It needs strong leadership and consistency. I am sure that if Bob left us for the NFL or perhaps, moves back to Florida (can we say, Florida State), he can still get a pretty good price on that estate he bought himself of Norman.

I will start the chant now...Fire Bob Stoops now.

It is time for a change. But it won't happen. In this economy, it would be difficult to put together the buy-out money required to rid ourselves of Stoops. Our only hope is that Bob will contact his agent and start looking on his own. He's done in Norman. And he knows it.

I normally don't post on other teams' websites - smacks too much of those morons from Mizzou and Colorado who troll message boards to make insulting comments about opponents. But as a Nebraskan looking at Oklahoma this year, I can't believe people would suggest Bob Stoops needs to be let go. You REALLY don't want to go there - trust me. What would this team be with Gresham and Bradford? Granted, the O-line is a major concern, but the defense is lights out and the rbs and wrs are solid.

Bob Stoops runs a classy program that has had a lot of bad luck this year. IMO, you'd have to be nuts to want to be rid of him. Do yourselves a favor: survive this year, and look what next year might bring.

Hey Big Rev!

Is this why, you all fired Frank Solich (the second most successful coach behind Dr. Tom)? And you had a option when you did!! If you guys had not fired your current coach several years ago, you would not have fallen as far as you did. Keep that one in mind.

Any body who says, "Fire Bob Stoops!" is an absolute idiot. Bad seasons happen. You spoiled morons need to reconsider your thoughts (phdwarrior) about this. There are problems, yes, but Bob did not throw those picks, miss those field goals, hold, or jump the line. Wake up and remember the 90's!

I agree....anybody who really believes that they need to "fire Bob Stoops" is a @$%#@& IDIOT and knows nothing about football, or life for that matter. OU has a national championship-caliber defense this year, and national-championship caliber program, and coaches. Its easy to second-guess after plays don't work....I doubt if any of you in the past year, when Bradford was setting records, would say after a touchdown pass by Bradford to Gresham that "he made a bad decision" or "the coaches should've called ths other play" You just cheered. On-field live-ball decision-making is probably the key....as well as maturity and discipine, which has not been consistent with all the penanties that have been committed.
But if you really want to post "Fire Bob" or some other staff, why not just fly a banner behind a plane staing that you are an IDIOT!

I really don't believe what I am reading. I am a Nebraska fan who loves you Sooners. I called this game a month ago as a game where the first team to 10 would win. Why? You have one of the best defenses ever but your O line is hurt and young. That got Sam B. hurt. We have four front linemen who will all play on Sunday. With them against your broken front line, your offense will look like it is truly broken. It is not, but without blocking, no offense works. Give yourself another year of seasoning and maybe some new folks (and please get a kicker). Then you will be just fine. I love your team and your fans. While I do yell Go Big Red, I also hope that the Sooners rol overy everyone but us. :-)

Let's just say this is the weirdest year in the history of the Big 7,8, and 12. Only Texas is not insane, at least so far.

Poor O-line play, young inexperienced QB exposed in road games, penalties, poor special teams play and poor job of the coach getting his kids ready to play resulted in this years poor showing. These problems are all correctible over the next two years. In the meantime Bob Stoops needs to take a page out of mack Brown's book from when his teams were underachieving and make key coordinator adjustments.

We were in the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP game LAST YEAR people! Do you remember LAST YEAR? Do you know what Bob's winning % is during his time at OU? Look it up. Those calling for Stoops to be fired are either complete morons or are really fans of another school posing as Sooner fans trying to rile up Sooner Nation.

Maybe this is a sign of a cleansing or re-birth if we end up in the Ind. Bowl. Does everyone remember what happened after the last time we were there?

Hey ParkerJBP,

Thanks for the words. I love a good rivalry, so OU-Nebraska has been special for me as an OU fan for close to 40 years. At the movies, we don't want to see James Bond breaking up a liquor store robbery, we want to see him going up against the top Bad Guy in the world. I'm glad to see Nebraska getting back on track and it starts with always being in the game when you have a defense like that. I hope that by the next time we play against you again that your offense will have caught up and we'll have two Top 5 teams battling it out again.

If this wasn't enough evidence that Coach Wilson can't adjust his style to fit this talent, then I don't know what else would be. Running into the teeth of a very good D-line. Put your REDSHIRT Freshman QB in one hole after another. Don't role him out! Those interceptions were as much a result of tipped passes at the line as anything because we didn't role him out.Receivers who can't catch, an offensive NON leader(wilson) stupid o-line mistakes and you have a QB who is a deer in the headlights! Great job Kevin.

Just Curious,

I think your logic is right. I like to give our coaches the benefit of the doubt as circumstances in changing personnel is somewhat fluid, but there are patterns I have observed. Remember after the loss to Texas and the comments by Coach Wilson about how our running game was ineffective and that it needed to improve? He said the same thing when we lost to Texas in 2008 and couldn't run for a first down, and after that game last year they buckled down on the running attack. We have a different line this year, but the same coach, and I think it's questionable when a statement used one year after a loss regarding the preparedness of a team is repeated the next year against the exact same team.

Think about it: have you ever seen a worse 1st quarter of football at any level? It set the tone for the entire game. Nebraska's rookie quarterback gave everybody the jitters and it went downhill from there. What was it? 13 total yards for the Huskers in the first quarter.

The rhythm of that game is that there was no rhythm, it was herky-jerky from the get go. And how many times do you run into a monster like Suh? That game was a car wreck ready to happen from the git-go.

And my last rant: have you ever seen as many flags in any football game? At some point the refs have got to let the players play ball. If you are self-conscious because you are unsure if you are going to be whistled, you become tentative and defensive.

I'm not making excuses about how terrible Coach Wilson is (he is) or that the O-line totally sucks. Stoops is a good head coach and I can think of 5 assistants off the top who are or have been head coaches of a major college program after coming out of the Stoops system. So I am not going to lay it at Stoops' door completely.

I agree that this is Stoops' worst team. A stinker season or two happened to Barry Switzer and Tom Osborne. Let's not beat down these young guys too much, because like it or not, they form the nucleus of this team for the next couple of years regardless of who the coaches are.

Can it improve? Of course. Will it get worse before then? Maybe, but Sooner fans have been through so much before that we can weather this if everyone will get their frustration out and then get behind these guys. Either that, or take the label "fair weathered" and quit your gritching.

I am curious if any of you idiots that are calling for Coach Stoops' firing actually graduated from OU? I bet many who are the bandwagon fans have never spent more time in Norman than required to attend a game, if they were lucky enough to stumble onto some tickets. Crawl back under your rocks and either wait for the basketball bandwagon or for next year when the football team rights the ship, then you can jump back on the Sooner Schooner with those of us who won't leave, are more rational in our expectations, and realize that some years are up and some are down. Get lives, losers.

Things will not alwayz be perfect with the team.
Things happen sometimes for soem of you non-athletes.
I am a high school football coach and I know how the guys feel.
So slow down on the firing of Stoops.
A coach can only do with a player that will fit his athletic ability.
A bird can only fly when he is ready.
If momma bird pushes him from the nest to soon he will fall hard.
Stoops is not the problem but the team has alot of growing up to do.
You guys are all foolish.
When things are going good all is okay but when things look bad you guys want to tar and feather someone.
Get over yourselves and eal with a mediocore season.
Those coaches feel bad enough and they cannot control the things that happen like injuries.
Stoops is a great recruiter and best believe that they will be back next season.
Jones has been thrown into the fire that he was not truly ready for but has done well with all things considered.
You knew that the offensive line was going to struggle this season.
If Bradford and Gresham were not injured we would be underfeated but guess what.
We are not and the team is doing well for what has happened to them.
Only 12pts. from being underfeated.
Can you find any other team that is doing that well with injuries and other intangibles?
Firing a coach that has won over 85% of his games is STUPID.
There will be cahnges over the years but right now it's not going to happen.
So cheer them on and suffer with them or jump off the bandwagon.
GO SOONERS this to will pass.

it is painfully obvious that mr. wilson is sadly lacking as a coach. he should be gone, but the rest of the staff should be retained. coach stoops can't help the injuries, the sooners may have been winners in they lost, but maybe not all of them. ease up, injuries are going to happen and it's too bad it happened to our front line players, but here we are and with a season that will be best forgotten. any sooner fan from the 70's can well remember when the first two units could have finished one and two in the nation. the ncaa fixed that up by cutting the scholarships down and parity began and here we are, i always called that the ou rule. . .but, i've never been a fan of the ncaa czars who act like a deity and think they don't make mistakes and hand decisions down that are laughable.
