'Devastated'
Houston stuns Tulsa on final play of game

Tulsa's Kenny D. Sims walks off the field as Houston players celebrate their last-second win Saturday. CORY YOUNG/Tulsa World

Pain ripped through a deflated Chapman Stadium on Saturday night.

The Tulsa football fan base was ready to erupt for its team, which seemed destined for an upset victory over No. 13 Houston.

But the visitors stunned players and fans by scoring nine points in the game's final 21 seconds to escape with a 46-45 victory over the shell-shocked Golden Hurricane.

Houston kicker Matt Hogan nailed a 51-yard field goal as time expired to set off a Cougars victory party and plunge Tulsa to a four-game losing streak, which includes home defeats to a pair of top 15 nationally ranked teams.

"They're devastated as much as I am," TU coach Todd Graham said about the postgame locker room. "I told them down there that I haven't been more proud of a group of guys than this group tonight."

Charles Clay scored his fourth touchdown of the evening, a 1-yard run with 3:28 remaining, to give Tulsa a 45-37 lead with 3:28 remaining.

Tulsa (4-5 overall, 2-3 in C-USA) wouldn't take another offensive snap.

Case Keenum proved why he's a Heisman Trophy candidate on the Cougars' next drive. The quarterback used clutch passes to convert twice on third down and once on fourth down. He capped the march with his third touchdown pass to James Cleveland, a 1-yard score with 21 seconds to go.

Tulsa still led 45-43, which forced the Cougars to go for a 2-point conversion. When Tanner Antle sacked Keenum, everyone seemed to breathe easier.

Perhaps too easy.

Chase Turner's onside kick bounced off TU's Dexter McCoil's chest and into Tim Monroe's arms. Houston received new life and the ball on its own 39.

Keenum hit back-to-back passes for 14 and 13 yards to set up Hogan's final kick with three seconds left. The redshirt freshman hit a career-long field goal of 51 yards, easily surpassing his previous high of 34 yards.

Houston's "Great Escape" was complete.

"As coaches, you can't get down," said Cougars coach Kevin Sumlin, whose team improved to 8-1, 4-1. "As long as there is time on the clock, you have to try and figure out a way to stay positive. As long as there's time on the clock, you have to try and win the game.

"Our coaches did a great job of not panicking, and our kids did a good job of handling the situation."

The loss spoiled Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne's career game. After being benched in last week's 27-13 loss to SMU, Kinne responded by throwing for a career-high 334 yards and rushing for 100 yards. It was the first time in school history that a quarterback has thrown for 300 and passed for 100.

When Graham was asked about the way Kinne played, the coach tersely answered, "We don't have a quarterback controversy."

The Hurricane moved the ball with ease against the Cougars, finishing with a season-high 534 yards of offense. But in a game where every possession counted, two second-half turnovers hurt its chances.

Kinne was intercepted by Jamal Robinson when trying to let loose on a long pass to Justin Skillens, and Jamad Williams fumbled on TU's next possession after a 14-yard run to midfield.

"We generated a lot of offense ... scored when we needed to score," Graham said. "In the end, two turnovers were very costly for us.

"We have a really good football team. Tonight, that one hurts really, really bad. We felt like we were the best team on the field tonight. Our guys outplayed them."

Keenum finished 40-of-60 passing for 522 yards, and guided an offense that ended with 695 yards.

Clay scored on two runs (4 yards, 1 yard) and two receptions (60 and 8). Entering the game, he had two touchdowns overall this season.

Houston led 24-21 at halftime before TU retook the lead on Clay's 8-yard scoring reception with 12:45 remaining in the third quarter. It wouldn't face a deficit again until the game's final play.

TU needs to win two of its final three games to reach bowl eligibility. It faces East Carolina next Sunday night for a 7:15 home game.

"I don't think I've ever lost one like that," Graham said. "That one really hurt because I thought our kids really played well."

Tulsa played a great game in spite of the last few minutes mistake. That happens! But the Hurricanes have had a tough schedule this year. Tougher than OSU! At least the Hurricanes don't embarrass their fans.

Laying odds on how many times TG will say "we were outcoached" in his post game presser. I have 4.

Which leads me to being outcoached. Why were most of the TU guys on the WEST side of the field, when UH had their guys on the EAST side and their kicking was FACING that way? Any clue...anyone?

We should have had 11 receivers on the field for that onside kick. No excuse for that, none whatsoever.

TG...I am beginning to think you are on to something with this whole "outcoached" business.

And yes, Dr. Strangelove...those Vegas oddsmakers are freakin' geniuses!

Omega their schedule was much tougher than OSu's oh wait not OSU played Houston, OU, Texas, Texas Tech, A&M. I don't think the C USA schedule is quite the same. UTEP, Southern Miss, East Carolina please you guys can't even win your pathetic side of the pathetic conference. The only C USA team that could even go 500 in the Big 12 is Houston and I will say they are good, TU showed how good they could be against OU.

I had Houston, but wow, what a heartbreaker for TU. I figured it would be a blowout and it was far from that. Fun game to watch. I think TU just bought themselves a bowl invite.

To qualify for a bowl game I think they have to win 2 of their last 3.

No one has said anything so far about the blown call that resulted in TU getting their 2 point safety taken away from them. The replay official looked at a handoff by Houston, and came back and called it a forward pass. A total crock of stinkin' brown stuff. And it cost TU the game.

Bad breaks are a part of the game. But it still hurts. I still say with pride, GO TU!!!

This game had alot of bad calls against TU but like you say it's part of the game. I thought you put the people in with the "best" hands on onside kicks? I guess Coach Graham thinks differently. Also I just have one real complaint about this game....Why is Graham making #3 and #4 the only players on the whole team. It is going to take all players to win games Graham.

Last I checked Hurricane4Lyfe, Tulsa scored 45 points and Charles Clay had around 100 yards all purpose. I don't think the offensive gameplan(maximizing touches for your best players) or play calling was the problem.

I thought TU was the "Golden" Hurricane? Aren't the team colors blue and gold? Why are they wearing red jerseys? That just doesn't look right.

That was a hard loss. The TU offense was awesome. UH couldn't stop the QB runs up the middle. What kind of defensive strategy is that to fake an injury on every other play so the defense can rest? It just gives the other offense the time to strategize.

It is always a shoot out when we play Houston, our team played well, we just didn't finish the game. Keenum is a stud and being that we are all fans of our Conference getting more respect we need to give him some Heisman support. We have been very good over the past couple of years and we didn't get any respect. Now that we are not playing them anymore, I just have to say go Coogs and Keenum for Heisman! I hope they crack the BCS and then spank one of those overrated blow hard BCS conference schools.

Oh, just to let all of you know on the fumble that was ruled a forward pass; the replay officials got that one right. No matter if you throw the ball overhand or if toss the ball underhand, if the ball goes forward which it did clearly, it is a forward pass. On the other hand that punt returner for Houston never touch the ball the replays showed and the commentators agreed. I also noticed we got a call where Houston was called for defensive holding and GJ ran for around 15, then they tacked on the 10 yards for the holding. You can only accept the play or the call, you can't take both that is not an option. lol We got lucky that they overturned GJ's fumble, I could not tell if he was loosing the ball or not before his knee went down, but they overturned the call on the field. I digress.

Our uniforms looked hideous, what are we thinking!

A great game; a tough game--for both teams and their fans! Congrats to Tulsa for keeping us on the edge of our seats the entire game.

A couple of comments: Bad calls went both ways (a constant with C-USA refs). Why was your entire fan section wearing BLUE but football uniforms were red and white (ok with a TOUCH of blue)? What's with all the Tulsa "injuries?" Leg cramps instead of time outs? Waaaaay too many to not be suspicious. Either that or your guys need conditioning. Didn't see a Coog go out with leg cramps.

Good points made by all. But in my opinion: TU would be 6-3 if Destin holds onto the ball and intercepts it on UTEP's last drive and McCoil covers UH's offside kick. It's really unfair to boil those two games down to single plays, but as a fan or player when the game is on the line those plays can make the difference in a season. Make those two plays and TU is atop CUSA West Division.

But that's why you play 60 minutes and all three phases of the game can have an equal impact.

I think TU will run the table and head to a bowl with seven wins, but oh how close the Golden Hurricane could be to heading to the conference championship game and then the Liberty Bowl.

Keep your chins up TU and win out. Next season could be outstanding.

I think defense did a good job.....But as always by the end of the game they are worn out. I agree with the earlier comment about the cramps/timeouts. I remember last year when East Carolina did TU like this in the Conference Championship game.
