TU Notebook: On further review
By MIKE BROWN World Sports Writer

The Hurricane thought it had a second-quarter safety when UH receiver Tyron Carrier muffed a handoff from quarterback Case Keenum and recovered in the end zone. But replay officials ruled it an incomplete forward pass.
Huh? Technically, the ball traveled forward about two feet from Keenum to Carrier, who never got the handle.
The Cougars pop the ball forward all the time, explained UH sports information director Chris Burkhalter. It's a safe play because if it's fumbled, it's usually ruled an incomplete pass, Burkhalter said. But this was the first time this season the Cougars had muffed the play and needed rescue from the replay officials, Burkhalter said.
TU's fans responded with a chorus of boos and booed intermittently through the remainder of the second quarter.
The ruling resulted in at least a five-point swing. Instead of Tulsa getting two points and possession of the ball after a Houston free kick, the Cougars drove 79 yards to Matt Hogan's 32-yard field goal.
Personnel shuffle:
TU sophomore tackle Tyler Holmes returned to the lineup for the first time in seven games, but junior receiver A.J. Whitmore was sidelined by a concussion suffered in practice this week.
Holmes, a Conference USA preseason all-league selection, hadn't played since breaking his leg during the week of the Sept. 19 Oklahoma game in Norman.
First blood:
TU freshman receivers Freeman Kelley and Justin Skillens registered their first collegiate receptions. Another true
freshman, Ricky Johnson, caught his first collegiate TD pass, a 15-yarder from G.J. Kinne in the second quarter.
Casing Keenum:
With his first two TD passes Saturday, UH quarterback Case Keenum tied Kevin Kolb (2003-06) for second place on the school's all-time list. Keenum, a junior, passed Kolb with a fourth-quarter touchdown and has 86 in his career. David Klingler holds the Houston record, with 91 TD passes from 1988-91.
Keenum's 4-yarder to James Cleveland in the first quarter extended his streak of games with at least one TD pass to 25.
Seeing red: Tulsa wore the home red jerseys first used in the opening game in newly remodeled Chapman Stadium last year.
Alumni alert:
In his second season with the St. Louis Rams, former TU linebacker Chris Chamberlain has been nominated for the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl as a special teams player.
Chamberlain was a seventh-round pick by the Rams in 2008. He played in all 16 games last season and has appeared in all eight games in 2009.
Chamberlain finished as the fifth-leading tackler in TU history, with 352 stops. As a senior in 2007, he was a first-team all-Conference USA selection.

Inside rivalry:
Navy's football win over Notre Dame gave TU basketball coach Doug Wojcik bragging rights over athletic director Bubba Cunningham. Wojcik played basketball for the Midshipmen. Before TU, Cunningham was a Notre Dame assistant athletic director.
For starters:
Senior cornerback Kenny D. Sims made his 30th consecutive start Saturday. Senior guard Curt Puckett made his 29th in a row, and senior linebacker Mike Bryan made his 22nd.

The officials blew the safety call , which cost TU a 1point win.

zephyr - I thought so too but after reading the post I will have to watch the game on ti-vo to see exactly what the refs were seeing. In earlier comments someone said it was a forward pass so I would like to see that and all the other bad plays they seemed to be calling. Its hard to see the field from the stands. But no matter what...the call stands and we lost. Also they say that Houston did not touch the ball on that kick off return, so I guess it all equal'd out...we just ended up with the short end of the stick. GO TU - BEAT THE PIRATES
