Sooners had nice win, but...

NORMAN — Well, that's one. Albeit a really big one.

So why am I having trouble believing Oklahoma's football team may have finally found itself in this one win? Did the Sooners really figure out their identity in Saturday night's 65-10 whipsawing of Texas A&M?

I'd like to say yes, but I've seen this Jekyll-and-Hyde act from the Sooners for weeks. They post big numbers, win easily at home, then proceed to become road kill when they play away from the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium.

Fool me one, two, even three or four times. But it will take a victory at Texas Tech this Saturday to make me a believer and to actually consider that the Sooners have a chance to salvage a weird season that has seen them lose four road games when they managed to score only 13, 20, 13 and 3 points.

"Look at the (road) scores," said running back DeMarco Murray, who was outstanding last night. "We have to put up more points (on the road) and continue to improve."

The latest road flop happened just a week earlier in an embarrassing 10-3 loss at Nebraska. The impressive 62-point scoring differential a week later is the second biggest turnaround in OU history. It's only topped by the 1980 Sooners, who scored 82 points the week after they were held to 14.

But, as I mentioned, we've seen this several times. OU has hung up 64, 45, 33, 42 and now 65 points in wins in Norman. A 35-13 win at Kansas remains the only game away from home when the Sooners offense wasn't MIA.

This latest victory also made OU bowl eligible as it improved to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12 Conference. But never in the Stoops era has OU simply set its goal as getting the six victories needed to play in the postseason.

But OU deserves credit for winning the first one of what has boiled down to a three-game, must- win situation as the Sooners seek to save a season that's still teetering on the brink of implosion.

The offense bounced back from its embarrassing play at Nebraska by rolling up a whopping 640 yards. Quarterback Landry Jones rebounded from his school-record five interceptions against the Cornhuskers by throwing for 392 yards and five scores.

But it's still only one game. One more victory at home.

A win at Texas Tech and a Bedlam victory in the Sooners' house over Oklahoma State would allow OU to avoid the dubious distinction of tying the record as the second-worst Sooner team in coach Bob Stoops' 11 season. OU was 7-5 in Stoops' first year. Since then, the Sooners have failed to win at least 11 games only once, when they finished 8-4 in 2005.

If OU sweeps this three-game series, it would give the Sooners an opportunity to play in a decent bowl game (the Cotton Bowl, perhaps) and finishing a more Stoops-like 9-4.

Yet, a lot of us wouldn't be surprised if OU drops its final two to finish 6-6. And is forced by Big 12 rules to play in a minor bowl when the Sooners might prefer to stay home for the holidays if they can't post a winning record.

Believe it or not, OU's dominating victory over the Aggies (5-5, 2-4) wasn't convincing enough to persuade many of us to believe the Sooners have finally overcome the injury-bug situation that has plagued them.

What's there to worry about? Plenty. A lack of time and space doesn't allow me to list all the reasons why OU fans should still remain skeptical as the Sooners head into November's regular-season stretch run.

Here are a few areas of concern:

OU continued to commit senseless penalties (11 for 102 yards), had a turnover and was forced to turn to a previously unknown, unused, walk-on named Patrick O'Hara in a desperate attempt to solve the Sooners' season-long problems in the kicking game. Stoops went with O'Hara after Tress Way missed a field goal and Jimmy Stevens had an extra-point blocked. The sophomore delivered.

There's also this: The big numbers came against the worst defense in the Big 12 Conference and one of the most woeful units in the nation. The Aggies also decided to celebrate Christmas early by repeatedly giving OU the gift of turnovers.

On the flip side, A&M also entered the contest with the Big 12's No. 1 offense. And OU's defense, which has been the only consistent bright spot, was magnificent once again. But the Aggies also handed OU several easy scoring opportunities with fumbles that were often self-inflicted.

"The encouraging part is that they had some turnovers and our offense took advantage of them with touchdowns," said Stoops of an OU offense that has struggled in the red zone. "But it all begins with our defense."

And that's where it usually ends for the Sooners when they hit the road.

OU has lost its last two games at Texas Tech. And those losses came with Sooner teams that were much better than this beleaguered bunch.

Well, the Sooners of last night compared with some of Stoops' best teams. But it was only one game.

Laughable victory considering the ever present lack of discipline that creates yellow debris all over the field.
At the "2 game" reamining mark of a season it would be a safe bet that a vast majority of Pop Warner League teams in the area have homed in on a kicker and have limiting flaggable offenses, geez, what up dawg? Long and winding road here sports fans with 2 games left and another game at one of the whatyamacallit bowls. Bring out the throw backs, clear the racks of Sooner apparel at Wal-Mart, its discounted now ya know and lets get ready for next year? That TCU purple kind of grows on ya don't it?

The Sooners lost the last two games at Tech. In 2005, Tech was given a first down for going 8.5 yards rather than 10 yards for a first down on a final Tech drive. In 2007, Oklahoma almost beat Tech with a back-up when Sam Bradford had a concussion. Hopefully, the quarterback who will play for the Sooners will have taken the majority of the snaps in practice the week before the game plus the game will surely be called more evenly by the officiating staff. Look on the internet for the 2005 fourth down play where a photograph of Tech getting a 8.5 yard first down is posted.

You're right, egl, 65-10 is pretty laughable. TCU purple is as well. And they call that bowl the "Cotton".

Why do I have difficulty viewing Sittler as an objective reporter or the fairweather fans as anything but idiots?

Anyone that would willingly list itself as being from Hooterville...and admires PURPLE, is a laughable subject. I believe the cowchokes only beat the aggies by about 5?? A good win and a needed win...even at home Dave...A win next week isn't necessary, but kick'n the texass aggies LARGE should have sent a notice up to Stillwater...we just ain't done quite yet...even if it takes a home game to soothe the nerves of the young...Just my opinion...

At what lead should the Sooner's pull their 1st. Teams....48 / 10 at half time...58 / 10 at the end of the 3rd. quarter? Beating a team...rubbing their noses in the loss is just plain classless and stupid....what about risking injuries...and for what? No one is impressed by the lopsided victory...A&M is not exactly a powerhouse and looking at the game they self destructed. This Victory did not answer very many questions and sent notice throughout the conference about who Oklahoma really is.

I think Dave Sittler does a nice job in his blogs. Remember, they are just that...blogs (as in "his opinion"). He always has good stats and seems to know his football. Sometimes the truth hurts but he tells it like it is. It's not biased if it's true.

Congratulations to the sooners. They should be very proud they beat Texas A&M High School, wow OU, great victory, you guys are really on a roll, beating a Big 12 powerhouse like A&M. what a joke. Lets face it, this year the sooners are down. Funny to me how you dont see everyone and their dog flying there little OU flags on their cars any more. Can anyone say bandwagon fans? OU has always and will always be a joke to me, for one reason, their fan base.

Considering how great '08 was for the Big XII it seems like the law of averages has taken hold this year and balanced us back out. It's been a pretty 'ho hum' season across the nation and, considering how weird it's been for all Oklahoma teams, I'd say both OU and OSU especially have done a good job. Both need to finish strong to earn back a little respect for the Big XII.

People, people, people. kdrizzle, do you not realize how lame and over-played you sound? BOBO, do you not realize that we no longer HAVE a 1st string? Sorry we didn't win by less or give up more or help them not fumble punts or whatever would have made you happy. And Carlos, I guess you're saying "his opinion" is "the truth"? So in other words, his OPINION hurts? What if I disagree with his opinion? Does that mean the truth is false or that MY opinion is not the truth?

Why are the OSU fans mocking Texas A&M? Who have they beat? Georgia? If I am not mistaken, didn't OSU play Texas A&M too? I guess OSU forgot we play in the same conference. I guess when we beat Tech next week, they will mock them too.

It all comes down to Bedlam. When we win that game, all we will hear is that OSU has a better record than us. I can see it now...

From the OSU faithful:

"We may have lost, but we are 9-3. OU is 8-4. We are still better."

I can't wait. OU 31 OSU 20

Masked Assassin,
Does OU not flop on away games? DeMarco Murray, OU running back, was even quoted as saying something to this effect in this article but you would never say HE is wrong. You guys just hate to see anyone criticize OU. Sometimes it has to be done though in order for improvements to be made.

Sure OU's offense isn't ass good as past offenses going into Lubbock this weekend, but you also failed to mention that this Tech team offensively isn't as domniating as it has been either. Like one poster said, Tech had lots of help the past two times OU was there.

DeMarco said we needed to score more points on the road. (Ya think) Sittler brought up flopping. You said he always has good stats. As opposed to what? We're all well aware of the deficiencies and of the past. Nothing profound here.

Good stats as in he seems to either really know football or really do his homework. He compares stats from previous seasons well and looks at the teams objectively as opposed to being biased based on his team loyalties. Reading his columns, I cannot tell if he is a fan of the team he is discussing or not. That is how a column should be written and it may sting sometimes but it helps people see the bigger picture.
